NEIL DOORLEY, The Courier-Mail, August 30, 2014

Imam Uzair Akbar at Friday afternoon prayers at the Holland Park Mosque.                                            Photographer: Liam Kidston.

FRIDAY prayers are significant for Muslims, and in Australia’s oldest mosque at Brisbane’s Holland Park the sermon yesterday to about 450 mostly men was one of mercy.

Imam Uzair Akbar highlighted an historical example from the Prophet Mohammed when Mecca was captured from the Arabs, who were pardoned despite the persecution faced by Muslims.

It is a message these Muslims wanted the wider Australian community to fully understand.

“This is one of the most prominent mosques in Australia and 99.99 per cent of Muslims know the historical aspect of Islam, which is one of mercy,” spokesman Ali Kadri said.

“Radicals are very, very few in number and they don’t have a large voice in the community.

“They may rant and rave on the internet but when it comes to the mosques, they don’t bring their extremist opinions because we have experts in Islam here.”

The Courier-Mail was allowed into yesterday’s prayer session to highlight that mosques were not hotbeds for extremism.

“I know that people are afraid watching what is happening overseas and seeing some Australians involved in it, but they need to know that Islam is a 1400-year-old religion and the Middle East for a good period of time was ruled by Muslims and they lived peacefully with a large number of Christians, Jews, Sabiens and Yazidis,” Mr Kadri said. “Our mosque and those around the nation are about peaceful co-existence.”

Mr Kadri said the mosque had been targeted by hate crimes.

“We recently had a pig’s head left in the mosque with a cross on it which was disappointing because we welcome anyone … come and join the congregation.”

Mr Kadri said no-one from the Holland Park

community had joined the ranks of foreign fighters, but he knew some Muslims who had fought overseas.

“They are not a major part of any mosque congregation,’’ he said. “They may come and pray but they are not regular prayer attendees if you like.

“Most are radicalised on-line and they have their views. They hold them very strongly and we have tried to speak with them, tried to debate with them from an Islamic perspective,’’ he said.

The Council of Imams Queensland (CIQ) and several organizations have expressed their appreciation in response to the “Love for 100 years” campaign which was reported in last week's CCN.

On the 21 August, religious leaders from various faith communities issued a statement proclaiming they will “love Muslims for 100 years”.

"This notion of empathy provides a counter narrative to the negative portrayal of people of the Muslim faith via frequent links to violent extremism within political and media discourse," a spokesperson for the CIQ told CCN.

"The response statement represents and is supported by various communities and members of numerous religious and non-religious institutions."

Toowoomba Chronicle

Muslims say no backlash despite global headlines

TOOWOOMBA'S Muslims say they have not been subjected to any abuse after their religion has been thrust into the world's headlines.

Islamic Society of Toowoomba president Professor Shahjahan Khan (pictured left) said in his 21 years living in Toowoomba the Muslim community has been predominately accepted with open arms.

"My family and I have always enjoyed a very inclusive experience and through my involvement with the Islamic Society it has been the general consensus among the Toowoomba Muslim community," he said.

"The Islamic Society has always had a great relationship with Toowoomba Regional Council and we are regularly working with them and other local groups.

"Toowoomba has a very strong Muslim population and we are committed to developing a fully inclusive community in the region."

However Prof Khan believes new counter-terrorism laws proposed by Prime Minister Tony Abbott could create further animosity towards Muslims in Australia.

Professor Khan said the federal government's draft bill would generate unnecessary fear and would be a backward step in the efforts to build an inclusive Australian population

"A focus on engaging with Australia's Muslim community should be what the Federal Government should be working towards," Prof Khan said.

"These laws are the wrong policy and will only further alienate people.

"Developing trust and promoting good will between both parties is a more sustainable long-term approach."

By Safiyah Umm Sulayman

There is really no argument; modern society has very few options for teenage Muslim girls.

But that is changing on the account of a new youth group 'Beauty of a Muslimah' run by local sisters.

The idea was first put forth by sister Jessica Wicks who had previous experience with youth groups in Sydney and together with (name redacted) the program found it’s legs. Both women are reverts who acknowledge that girls are faced with a lack of fun activities for teenage Muslim girls combined with the increased temptation of fitna found in a western society. “We felt growing up the in western society it is important for young girls to realise that they can have fun in a halal way” said  (name redacted).

Jessica and  (name redacted) have worked hard to find new and engaging ways to involve the girls at their meetings. There is a strong focus on topics that pertain to teenage Muslim girls. This often involves inviting other sisters with specialised knowledge and skills. So far classes have included calligraphy workshops, science nights, game nights, photography workshops, prayer workshops and craft nights.

Another important aspect is the focus on charity in which the girls are encouraged to plan and run a charity event for a chosen cause. The last event was a highly successful high tea, which raised more than $2000 for Syrian Orphans.

The youth group is a program run through Sisters’ House and meets every Friday at iQraa Islamic Center from 6-9pm. It is free to attend the groups meetings with the exception of special excursions. Girls aged 12-17 years are encouraged to attend and more information can be found by contacting  (name redacted).

Australia's top spy has urged more Muslims to join the nation's security force to aid understanding of the Islamic community following negative reporting on Islam in the Australian newspaper.

Some Islamic leaders have expressed fears about proposed counter-terrorism laws, which are aimed at radicalised Australians fighting in overseas conflicts.

ASIO boss David Irvine said the government was not good at listening to the Muslim community and needed to work on communication.

He said he would like more members of the Islamic community to join ASIO.

"That will help us understand better, but this is an organisation that is designed to protect you and you should be part of it," he told Muslim community leader Jamal Rifi in an interview obtained by Fairfax Media.

Mr Irvine said he was "utterly outraged" by a report in The Australian newspaper and picked up by other outlets that suggested Australia was "fighting Islam".

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he was disappointed that some Muslim leaders had "rather foolishly" boycotted meetings in Melbourne and Sydney, where he pitched the laws.

World Ulama Descend on Turkey

TURKEY: A country that held the reins of the Islamic world for centuries is again emerging at the forefront of global Islamic discourse with its hosting of various symposiums discussing the most pressing issues facing the Ummah at this hour.

The latest in this series of deliberations was the high powered International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) conference that drew together hundreds of Ulama in Istanbul last week.

The symbolism of the conference venue did not go unnoticed by many of its patrons, including the respected Sheikh Yusuf al Qaradawi who noted that the frequency in occurrence of such discussions in the former home of the Khilafah may very well be a harbinger of better days to come for the Ummah.

Speaking to Cii Radio, Sheikh Shoayb Ahmed, one of the South African delegates to the event, said on the agenda at the conference were a host of matters of serious current relevance to the Muslim world. The broad theme on the symposium was the ‘role of Ulama in the resurgence of the Ummah’. Subsidiary discussions dealt with Ulama’s interventions required in: promoting a middle way in the dealings of the Ummah, protecting the Muslim identity, utilizing the media for the benefit of Islam and the Muslims, preserving inter-Muslim harmony and unity, formulating effective Fatawa, prioritizing the formal and informal education of the Muslim masses and responding to the most burning political crisis of the Muslim world.

Sheikh Shoayb said the conference was not a typical talk shop as it featured intense brainstorming sessions with participants drawn from an array of designations and persuasions. “Some were ministers, members of legislatures, advisors to politicians, teachers, academics..We were addressed by the deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Islamic Affairs of Turkey, Sheikh Isam Basheer of Sudan, Dr Rashid al Ghannouchi of Tunisia, Sheikh Yusuf al Qaradawi, Sheikh Ahmed al Raysouni of Morocco, Sheikh Hasan Bidou of Mauritania as well as Ulama leaders from Malaysia, Yemen, North Africa, the Balkans and the Caucasus.”

“Because of the vast range and spectrum of Ulama and their different fields of expertise and accessibility to their respective communities, I would think that Insha Allah, some of the recommendations made would be translated into meaningful effect on the ground,” Sheikh Shoayb added.

Earlier, the president of South Africa’s Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), Maulana Ihsaan Hendricks had the honour of addressing the global audience of Muslim scholars, politicians and intellectuals. Hendricks was also re-elected as an executive member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) for a third consecutive time at the annual gathering.

Formed in 2004, the IUMS was convened as a means of providing a channel for dialogue between various Muslims scholars. It was previously headquartered in Dublin, but currently hosts its headquarters in Qatar.

Ex-archbishop: Islam 'rejuvenating' British values

Britain's former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, who in 2008 called for the application of certain aspects of Islamic law in the UK, also criticized the notion of “British values,” saying that they should be more universal.

UK: Britain's former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has said that Islam is rejuvenating “British values” during a critical speech against Islamophobic segments of the British media.

Speaking to an audience of thousands at the annual Living Islam Festival, organised by the Islamic Society of Britain in Lincolnshire on Friday, the ex-archbishop praised mosques that have been working with local parishes to provide family services and youth activities.

The Independent reported that Dr. Williams, who in 2008 called for the application of certain aspects of Islamic law in the UK, also criticized the notion of “British values,” saying that they should be more universal.

His comments come amid an alleged 'Trojan Horse' scandal in which Muslims in Birmingham were accused of trying to take over the administration of a public school, accusations the local Muslim community denies.

British Muslims have blamed the over-publicized scandal, which has been covered in depth by right-wing media outlets in the country, for promoting the spread of anti-Muslim sentiment across the UK.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has since called for “British values” to be taught in schools, suggesting that children should be taught about the Magna Carta. “We need to be far more muscular in promoting British values and the institutions that uphold them,” the Mail on Sunday reported him saying.

KB says: With bananas in abundance, this is an ideal recipe which you can put together in under 10 minutes. I made two batches from this recipe - bite-sized ones for the no-so-hungry, as well as regular-sized ones.

Banana, Coconut and Nutty Muffins

3 ripe bananas mashed
2 eggs
1½ cups of sifted flour
1 cup of castor sugar
¼ cup of desiccated coconut
½ cup vegetable oil
¼ cup milk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla essence
½ cup of walnuts

1. Combine the oil, eggs, bananas, sugar, oil, vanilla essence and milk.
2. Fold in the coconut, flour and baking soda and nuts and mix well.
3. Pour into a loaf pan or muffin tins, decorate with some walnuts and bake at 180 degrees in a pre-heated oven until light brown.

DAY 5: Add 10 minutes to your walk and include your mini-workouts along the way - exercises such as walking lunges, jump-squats, step-ups, etc. to strengthen, tone and power up the legs for race day.

DAY 6: Rest day – Yoga, swimming or stretching

DAY 7: RACE DAY – Be sure to have a healthy breakfast at least 1 – 2 hours before the start of the walk.

One night at the dinner table, Mula Nasruddin's wife commented, "When we were first married, you took the small piece of kebab and gave me the larger ones. Now you take the larger ones and leave me the smaller. You don't love me anymore."

"Nonsense, darling," replied Mula Nasruddin, "you just cook better now."
