The History of India

The documentary series about the history of India charts the coming of Islam to the subcontinent and one of the greatest ages of world civilisation: the Mughals.

Mahmud of Ghazni leads an expedition to Somnath and destroys the temple of Shiva and all idols there.

Michael Wood visits Sufi shrines in Old Delhi, desert fortresses in Rajasthan and the cities of Lahore and Agra, where he offers a new theory on the design of the Taj Mahal.

He also looks at the life of Akbar, a Muslim emperor who decreed that no one religion could hold the ultimate truth, but whose dream of unity ended in civil war.

From the Muslim Welfare Shop desk

We are not far from the beginning of the school year. The Welfare shop holds stock of a number of school's uniform.

They are: Islamic College of Brisbane, Australian International Islamic College, Macgregor High School, Warrigal Road Primary School and John Paul College.

These uniforms are second hand, but are in good condition and sell at a reasonable price.

Aasiya

&

Salim

The nikah of Aasiya, eldest daughter of Ferhaad and Haseena of Brisbane, and Salim, son of (late) Yasmeen Haroon and Rukhsana Memon of Thane, Mumbai was performed after Asr in Thane, Mumbai on Friday, 13th January.

The reception was held the same evening at the Hotel Satkar Residency in Thane, Mumbai attended by well over hundred friends and relatives from South Africa, Australia, Europe and the US who travelled to India especially to grace the occasion.

Salim and Aasiya hope to return to Australia after Salim completes his final years of medical school in Buffalo in the United States.

A serene Mumbai evening, exotically prepared food and tasteful decor all served

to make the outdoor event a memorable occasion

The World's Most Influential Muslims in 2011

There are over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world today, making up approximately 23% of the world's population, or more than one-fifth of mankind.

The Muslim500 publication is part of an annual series that provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. It gives valuable insight into the different ways that Muslims impact the world, and also shows the diversity of how people are living as Muslims today.

The 2011 lists the world's most influential Muslims who have impacted on their community, or on behalf of their community. Influence is: any person who has the power (be it cultural, ideological, financial, political or otherwise) to make a change that will have a significant impact on the Muslim World. The impact can be either positive or negative. The influence can be of a religious scholar directly addressing Muslims and influencing their beliefs, ideas and behaviour, or it can be of a ruler shaping the socio-economic factors within which people live their lives, or of artists forming popular culture.

Over the coming weeks, CCN will publish a personality selected from the list:

No. 3

H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey

Erdogan’s party, the AKP (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, the Justice and Development Party), won its third consecutive election in June 2011, securing approximately 50% of the vote and thus making Erdogan the most successful Prime Minister in Turkey’s multiparty era. He is the Prime Minister of one of the most populous and economically developed Muslim-majority countries in the world.

Although Turkey has been run according to the ideals of secularism since the end of the Ottoman Empire, the populace is predominantly religious, and primarily Muslim. The AKP’s official ideology is ‘conservative democracy’; an attempt to create a Muslim democracy in an aggressively secular country. Under his watch Turkey has become the 16th largest economy in the world and a member of the G20.

A Popular Reformist
In September 2010, over 58% of voters supported Erdogan’s constitutional referendum which made changes to the constitution in order to bring the constitution into compliance with European Union Standards hence facilitating Turkey’s EU membership
process.

Erdogan is also leading groundbreaking initiatives to ensure the rights of Turkey’s Kurdish population, and its religious minorities— most recently calling for the establishment of an independent anti-discrimination commission, and the launch of a
state-run Kurdish language television channel.

A Mediator
Erdogan insists on a role for Turkey as a mediator and bridge between cultures and civilizations. The Alliance of Civilizations initiative of the United Nations—that Erdogan established with the Spanish president, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero—has become a key forum for international, intercultural, and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. Turkey is also playing mediating roles in the Libyan and Syrian conflicts.

“What should be targeted is a concept of organic, and not just mechanic, democracy that preserves the rule of law, separation of powers, and that is participatory and pluralistic ”

H.E. Recep Erdogan

Outspoken on Gaza
Erdogan is hailed for his strong opposition toward the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. He is noted for his high-profile snub of Israeli President Shimon Peres at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2009, and his criticism of Israel’s May 31 raid on a
humanitarian flotilla to Gaza, which killed nine Turkish nationals.
With Israel refusing to apologise, relations have deteriorated to the point where ambassadors have been recalled, and military cooperation frozen.

Good Neighbor Policy
Erdogan has led a new approach in Turkish foreign relations through his adoption of a ‘good neighbor policy’—in August 2009, Turkey and Armenia signed protocols to improve relations. During Erdogan’s leadership, Turkey has focused on building stronger relations with all of its seven land-contiguous neighbours (especially Greece) and also all of those countries bordering the Black Sea (an important trading hub and a geopolitically significant area). In May, 2010 Georgia’s president awarded Erdoğan the Order of Golden Fleece for his contribution to development of bilateral relations and in November, 2010 he received the Golden Medal of Independence, from Kosovo.

The Arab Spring
Although Prime Minister Erdogan took an early position against Ben Ali and Mubarak, a personal friendship with Gaddafi and Bashar Al-Assad had him flip-flopping on Libya and Syria. In his visit to Egypt he called for a ‘secular’ state which riled the Muslim Brotherhood. Nevertheless, his persistent wrangling with Israel keeps him popular in the Arab World, and Turkey remains an admirable model for a confluence of Islam and democracy.

KB's Culinary Corner

KB says: Lamb korma is one of Mr. KB's favourite dishes and it is often the first one he would pick off a menu in an Indian restaurant. I think he likes the softness of the lamb especially when it melts in your mouth. Continuing this particularly Indian themed CCN, this recipe is a deliciously creamy and spicy variation on the restaurant version.

Lamb Korma

Ingredients
1kg lamb cut into cubes
2 onions sliced
3 Tab ghee/oil
2 Tab ginger garlic mix
1 stick cinnamon, 2 lavang (cloves) an a 2 pods of elachi
1 tsp dhana jeeru mix (1/2 tsp each of coriander and cumin)
1tsp salt
125ml yoghurt
1 tin coconut milk
1 tin tomato or 4 fresh tomatoes pureed
½ cup chopped cashew nuts

Dressing
1. Beat  sautéd onions in ghee or olive oil until light brown, toss in the nuts, and quickly stir fry.
2. Liquidize the onions, nuts, coconut milk and tomatoes until fine.
3. Marinate lamb in yoghurt.
4. In a little oil braise the ginger garlic, dhana jeeru, and add the cinnamon, lavang and elachi. When the aroma (in 2 seconds) arises add the lamb, cook for 5mins and then add the liquidized mixture and simmer until meat is done and the sauce is thick.
5. Garnish with chopped green dhania and serve hot with rotis or naan

Kareema's Keep Fit Column

Q: Dear Kareema, I love walking and am thinking of incorporating running as part of my workout regime as well. Any tips?

A: Rule no. 1 is to make sure you wear well-fitting running shoes.

Start at a pace that is comfortable and manageable (don’t think about distance and time just yet).

If you go for your walk outdoors, do the same with running whenever possible, as you have to deal with the elements as well (more of a challenge).

Try not to run stressed – relax your shoulders and keep your abs tight, don’t hold your breath.

Over time you can increase the distance and speed to further improve your fitness.

Flightstar Fozi's Travel Tips

Q: Dear Flightstar Fozi,  I am flying to London early next month and have booked an economy class ticket. I am a frequent flyer. What are the chances of getting an upgrade to business class?

A: I think it is every travellers dream to travel business class, and it used to be that if you came well dressed to the airport and you asked nicely, the airlines would upgrade passengers if there were spares seats in business class.

Unfortunately now with more people travelling it is not as easy to get upgrades.

The airlines are not concerned with having spare seats in business class or first class.

If you are a frequent flyer and you want to upgrade the best thing to do is to use your frequent flyer points if you can.

You can also purchase additional points in some loyalty programs to use towards your upgrade, but there is also a limit to the number you can purchase.

The other option is to just purchase a business class ticket, it may be worth the price especially for long haul flights, with the extra comfort if you need to arrive fresh at your destination.

The CCN Chuckle

Jallaluddin, our bus driver friend, tells the story of when he was driving a bus load of pensioners to Bahrain, on a day trip, when he was tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady.

She offered him a handful of peanuts, which he happily took and ate.

After about 20 minutes, she tapped him on his shoulder again and she handed him another handful of peanuts.

The old dear repeated this generous gesture several more times.

When she is about to hand him another batch again Jallaluddin decided to ask the little old lady, "Why don't you and your friends eat the peanuts yourself?".

"We can't chew them because we've no teeth", she answered.

Jallaluddin was puzzled and enquired, "Then why on earth do you buy them?"

"Oh, we just love the chocolate around them," replied the old lady.
