There
were 72
participants from 10
different schools
and madressas who took
part in the Islamic
Council of
Queensland's (ICQ)
Quran Recitation
Competition on
Sunday last week.
The
competition was held
in nine separate
categories from
under 6 boys and
girls to over 14
boys.
The
event was officially
opened by the
president of ICQ Mr.
Mohammed Yusuf.
There were two
judges from Sydney,
Shaykh Bessam Zaki
and Shaykh Nisar
Attaha and one local
judge, Imam Mohammed
Zahrani.
Over
400 people attended
to enjoy the

recitation, a
delicious lunch as
well as being
entertained by
nasheeds from Imam
Aslam and Imam Abu
Ghazaleh.
The event was
co-ordinated by Mr.
Mohammed Farouk with
assistance from Mr.
Sayraz Mohammed and
other ICQ committee
members.
The
MC for the
competition was Mr.

The
presentations of the
major prizes and
certificates for
various categories
were made by Mr.
Faqir Bhatia, Mr.
Mohammed Sharif
(Deputy Principal
ICB), Dr Mubarak
Noor (Principal ICB),
Mr. Amar Ali Khan
(VP ICQ) and Mr.
Mohammed Yusuf
(President ICQ).
Over 200 CCN
readers completed our online
survey and we are most
appreciative of the very
constructive feedback,
comments and suggestions we
have received.
We are indeed
humbled and encouraged by
the overwhelmingly positive
response to CCN and the part
it has played in the lives
of our readers. Where
practically possible we have
already begun to implement
some of the suggestions and
plan to take on board the
other helpful ideas over
time.
Our readers
are also mindful of the
scope of the newsletter as a
portal of community-relevant
news and events that reflect
and affect the lives of
everyday Muslims - their
achievements, and
occasionally their trial and
tribulations, as they go
about their daily business
of contributing to their
communities and to society
in general.
Over 90 per
cent of the respondents
rated CCN good to excellent
with respect to
newsworthiness, information
and quality and this can, in
large part, be attributed to
the many community
organizations and their
members who send in reports
and photos for publication. CCN invites other
communities and
organizations to do likewise
and to communicate to our
network of subscribers the
great work that they do
.
An analysis
of the survey results
reveals that the majority of
our readers (65 per cent)
are over 30 years of age and
just over 62 per cent have
been reading CCN for more
than 3 years. There are just
as many male as there are
female readers and some 89
per cent of our readers
access CCN regularly every
week. Over 93 per cent of
the respondents were Muslim
and 73 per cent read their
CCN on a Sunday and 17 per
cent on a Monday. Almost 75
per cent of the readers
relied on the weekly email
link to access CCN while the
rest accessed CCN directly
from the home page of the
Crescents of Brisbane
website, the
CCN Facebook page or
through a forward from
someone else.
It is never
easy to cater to everyone's
ideas of a perfect
newsletter, but it is most
pleasing, and equally
humbling, to note
the extraordinarily large
numbers of respondents who
find favour with our work. A
selection of the comments
that typify these sentiments
can be read
here.
While our
readers in the main embrace
CCN's attempts at being
inclusive, two respondents
have taken umbrage with (1)
our perceived bias towards
particular communities and
(2) our non-sectarian,
non-theological and
politically neutral line. On
the first point, it should
be noted that all
communities and individuals
have always been afforded
the opportunity to submit
reports and promotional
material for consideration.
CCN has no control of who is
'making the news'. On the
second point, we are fully
aware of our limitations in
terms of our ability and our
access to resources to do
adequate justice to these
topics and therefore direct
our readers to more
competent sources of which,
thanks to the Internet there
are an abundance.
We are also
happy to announce that the
winner of the $50 Nandos Mt
Gravatt voucher is Ms
Kirsi Reinikka of
Springwood and a Nandos
addict as it turns out!
As we reach
the next milestone of our
400th issue in a few weeks
time, CCN once
again thanks all our readers
who completed the survey and
encourage you to continue to
send us your contributions
and to
email us your feedback as
the occasion arises.

Queensland’s
brightest university
planning students
offered a glimpse
into the state’s
future at the launch
of the Planning
Industry Australia (PIA)
Awards in Brisbane
on Tuesday.
Assistant Minister
for Planning Reform
Ian Walker awarded
the Minister’s Town
Planning Prize to
final year students
whose planning
projects or theses
made the best
contribution to the
advancement of town
planning.
“This
prize puts the
state’s best young

local government
scenarios,” Mr
Walker said.
First
runner-up in the
2012 Minister's Town
Planning Awards was
Ms Yasmeen Vahed
of the University of
Queensland for her
thesis entitled
The
Development Impacts
of Mosques on
land-use. Masjid Al
Farooq, Kuraby,
Brisbane: A Case
Study in Urban
Planning.
Amongst Ms Vahed's
recommendations
arising from her
surveys and
literature study
were several short
and long term
suggestions. These
included the need to
resuscitate plans to
construct an
overpass in Kuraby,
"which will
considerably ease
parking, traffic,
and congestion
concerns, and
to
minimise / solve
parking problems
through creative
thinking, such as
building suitable
additional parking
in the car park area
of the Wally Tate
Park or extending
the parking facility
at the railway
station."
"In
both cases, land
will not be lost
since a viable
proposition would be
to build an upper
level
(double-storey)
parking facility,"
she states.
According to Ms
Vahed the parking
facilities are
adjoining and such a
proposition is
feasible. The
Council could take
the initiative by
approaching mosque
authorities to
contribute
financially towards
the building of
additional parking
spaces.
Alternatively,
mosque authorities
could be proactive
and approach the
Council with such a
proposal. The
Federal government
could also be
approached for
funding from one of
its programmes aimed
at community
improvement.
You
can read the other
recommendations from
Ms Vahed's thesis

you to an
insightful,
informative evening
where editor of
"Beyond Tribal
Loyalties" Avigail
Abarbanel will
discuss Jewish peace
activism in the
context of the
Israeli-Palestinian
issue.
The stories
contained in Beyond
Tribal Loyalties
'are moving and
fascinating and tell
about the author's
journey to move out
of a Zionist
mindset, and into a
new way of being
that includes
opposition to
Israeli Occupation,
support for the
Palestinians, and in
many cases a new
sense of Jewish
identity and direct
opposition to
Zionism. Together
the stories add to a
comprehensive and
fascinating picture
of the
Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. They tell
of the deeply
personal and complex
journey to overcome
fear, tribalism,
rejection and
opposition in order
to do the right
thing.
"Beyond Tribal
Loyalties" can be
valuable for people
who find political
analysis about the
conflict a bit too
dry, but still want
to know what's going
on on the ground in
Israel-Palestine.'
The book discussion
will be on Tuesday
19 June 2012, 7.15
pm at the

Her
Eminence
Sheikha
Munira
Qubeysi
Leader of
the Qubeysi
Movement
Photographs of Sheikha Qubeysi are not
available due to her adherence to the
traditional prohibition of the use of images
of people and her covert leadership.
Munira Qubeysi
is the head of
the largest
women-only
Islamic movement
in the world. It
offers Islamic
education
exclusively to
girls and women.
Qubeysi commands
around 80
schools in
Damascus alone,
teaching more
than 75 thousand
students. She is
one of the most
significant
Islamic scholars
in the world;
her movement
focuses on
learning the
Qur’an and six
major hadith
collections by
heart. Qubeysi
is arguably the
most influential
Muslim woman in
the world,
albeit in great
discretion.
Female Muslim
Order
At a time when
clandestine
meetings of
Islamic
organizations
are proscribed
in Syria,
Sheikha
Qubeysi’s
network, the
Qubeysiat, has
legally been
permitted to
host classes and
meetings in
mosques since
2006—although
they had been
operating as a
secret society
for long before
that time.
Members of the
Qubeysiat
identify
themselves, and
ranks within the
group, based on
specific colors
and articles of
clothing—headscarves
knotted at the
neck, and
overcoats
denoting
membership
status. Women
within the
network are
provided a
unique role
within Arab
society as
scholars and
teachers
exclusively
catering to the
needs of Muslim
women; they
provide an open
forum to address
religious
questions and
discuss
religious
issues.
Milestones in
Islamic
Education
Qubeysi is
influential as
the leader of an
incredibly
successful
educational
movement. The
religious
education of
women had
previously been
neglected so the
emergence of a
female-specific
educational
initiative has
become very
popular, making
the Qubeysiat,
in numbers, the
leading Islamic
movement in
Syria Qubeysi’s
students are
also at the
forefront of a
significant
achievement in
Islamic history
in regards to
education—no
less than
70 Qubeysiat
have memorized
nine canonical
books of Hadith
with extensive
chains of
narration. By
training this
sizeable group
of female
scholars,
Shiekha Qubeysi
has made Islamic
knowledge widely
accessible, and
is credited for
the resurgence
of Islamic
education in the
country.
Leading an
Islamic Revival
in Syria
Qubeysi’s
influence in
Syria is due to
the fact that
she has been
able to develop
a very large
network of
madrassas
(religious
schools) without
attracting the
criticism of the
government,
which has
traditionally
been dubious of
large networks
of Muslim
organizations.
The organization
follows
traditional
Sunni practice,
and follows the
Shafi’i school
of thought.
Although member
groups are found
in Jordan,
Kuwait and
Lebanon,
Damascus is the
center of the
revivalist
movement.
The Arab Spring
•• The Arab
Spring events
have not
significantly
affected the
influence of
Sheikha Qubeysi.

Sheikh Abdul
Rahman Al-Sudais and Yahya Binladin listen
to an engineer as he briefed them on the
progress of work
MAKKAH: Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais,
head of the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques, yesterday
inspected the progress of work on the largest expansion of
the Grand Mosque in Makkah and said the new facility would
accommodate 1.5 million worshippers.
He commended Custodian of the
Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for initiating the SR 80
billion project, the largest in the mosque’s history, as
part of the government’s efforts to enhance facilities for
the millions of pilgrims who come for Haj and Umrah.
“A number of new projects
have been implemented inside the mosque and in the masaa
(the running area between Safa and Marwa mountains), helping
pilgrims perform their religious rituals easily,” said Al-Sudais,
who was appointed chief of the prestigious organization last
month.
Yahya Binladin, deputy
chairman of the Binladin Group, briefed Al-Sudais on the
advanced systems being introduced in the new expansion to
ensure the smooth flow of pilgrims, especially during peak
seasons. There are advanced security monitoring and garbage
disposal systems in addition to sunshades in courtyards
around the mosque. The new extension will be linked to the
existing building with bridges. It will be provided with an
advanced air-conditioning and lighting system.
Al-Sudais’ tour covered the
service station, which is being implemented on an area of
75,000 sq. meters. It will have environmentally-friendly
air-conditioning systems, water tanks and garbage disposal
systems. He commended the efforts of workers and supervisors
to complete the project on schedule.
King Abdullah laid the
foundation stone for the massive project last August and
dedicated it to the Islamic world. Covering an area of
456,000 sq. meters in the northwest and northeast of the
mosque, the project includes construction of a new building
and expansion and development of courtyards around the
mosque.
A 1,200-meter long tunnel
will be constructed from the end of the expansion passing
through Jabal Hindi while another tunnel 1,100 meters long
will be built under Jabal Madafie.
An emergency 700-meter tunnel
crossing the other two tunnels will be constructed from
Jabal Al-Kaaba. The government has spent about SR 40 billion
on the appropriation of properties for the project.
Economist Aabid Al-Abdali of Umm Al-Qura University said the
amount would trigger an unprecedented economic boom in the
holy city. He estimated Makkah's gross domestic product at
SR123 billion.

This
book is an adaptation of the Muqaddimah or Preface to
Mohammad Akram's 40-volume biographical dictionary (in
Arabic) of the Muslim women who studied and taught hadith.
It demonstrates the central role women had in preserving the
Prophet's teaching, which remains the master-guide to
understanding the Qur'an as rules and norms for life.
Within the bounds
of modesty in dress and manners, women routinely attended
and gave classes in the major mosques and madrasas,
travelled intensively for 'the knowledge', transmitted and
critiqued hadith, issued fatwas, etc.
Some of the most
renowned scholars among men have depended on, and praised,
the scholarship of their women teachers. The women scholars
enjoyed considerable public authority in society, not
exceptionally, but as the norm.
The huge body of
information reviewed in al-Muhaddithat is essential to
understanding the role of women in Islamic society, their
past achievement and future potential. Hitherto it has been
so dispersed as to be 'hidden'. Akram's dictionary will
greatly facilitate further study, contextualization and
analysis.
From Zaid Publications:
Mohammad Akram
Nadwi, a 43-year-old Sunni alim, or religious scholar, has
rediscovered a long-lost tradition of Muslim women teaching
the Koran, transmitting hadith (deeds and sayings of the
Prophet Muhammad (s)) and even making Islamic law as
jurists.
Akram embarked eight years ago on a single-volume
biographical dictionary of female hadith scholars, a project
that took him trawling through biographical dictionaries,
classical texts, madrasa chronicles and letters for relevant
citations.
“I thought I’d
find maybe 20 or 30 women,” he says. To date, he has found
8,000 of them, dating back 1,400 years, and his dictionary
now fills 40 volumes. It’s so long that his usual
publishers, in Damascus and Beirut, have balked at the
project, though an English translation of his preface –
itself almost 400 pages long – will come out in England this
summer. (Akram has talked with Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi
Arabia’s former ambassador to the United States, about the
possibility of publishing the entire work through his
Riyadh-based foundation.)

Q: Dear Kareema, I’ve started my exercise routine and
have been really good since I started about 3 months ago. I
just need to know where to start when it comes to fitting my
diet in too..
A: Don’t make it too hard for yourself.
Small changes will make a big difference.
Don’t completely stop with the foods you love, have less of
it, less often, and go from there.

One
afternoon a rich man was riding in his limousine when he
saw Jallaludin and Halimuddin along the roadside eating
grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he
got out to investigate.
He asked Halimuddin, 'Why are you eating grass?'
'We don't have any money for food,' Halimuddin replied.
'We have to eat grass.'
'Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll
feed you,' the rich man said.
'But, sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They
are over there, under that tree.'
'Bring them along,' the rich man replied.
Turning to Jallaludin he announced, 'You come with us,
also.'
Jallaludin, in a pitiful voice then said, 'But sir, I
also have a wife and six children with me.'
'Bring them all, as well,' the rich fellow answered.
They all climb in the car, which was no easy task, even
for a car as large as the limousine. Once underway,
Jallaludin turned to the rich gent and said, 'Sir, you
are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.'
The rich man replied, 'Glad to do it. You'll really love
my place. The grass is almost a metre high.'
Allah
commands you to render back
your Trusts to those to whom
they are due; and when you
judge between man and man,
that you judge with justice:
verily how excellent is the
teaching which He gives you!
For Allah is He Who hears
and sees all things.
