Mr

told
CCN.
In
addition to the delicious curry
and rice and sweets, there was a
tour of the properties during
which Mr Cajee described to CCN
the short and long term plans
for their new acquisition.
One of
the buildings will be used as a
madressah for the boys and girls
in each of the two floors. The
second building will be
converted into 4 studio-styled
accommodations for students and
the third building will be
rented out as well. These rental
incomes will supplement the loss
of revenue from the sale of the
three properties previously
owned by the Society.
Most of
the facilities in the current
Mosque building will be moved
over to the new buildings
thereby freeing the Mosque to
expand and improve the existing
prayer facilities, particularly
for the sisters. The Society is
now embarking on a plan to
refurbish sections of the new
buildings and put them into use
as soon as possible.
More than a century on from

was first established, the new

advance the cause of its
founding fathers in ways they
could hardly have imagined,

The 40th
Annual
Congress of
AFIC was

was elected
the
President of
AFIC last
year.
Along with
the members
on the
Executive
Committee
and invited
observers,
there were
47 delegates
from various
Societies
and Councils
participating
in the
annual
meeting.
In the first
session,
after the
recitation
from the
Holy Qur’an,
the
President

annual
report
highlighting
various
activities
and
achievements
of AFIC in
the previous
year.
Many

President,
and made
comments and
suggestions
to improve
the
management
of AFIC.
In response

President
assured the
Congress
that the
EXCO will
review the
decision at
the next
EXCO meeting

The most
significant
resolution
adopted by

of a
Constitution
Review
Committee to
bring about
changes in
the
constitution
of AFIC in

The main
focus of the
motion was
to separate
the
management
of the
organisational
matters of
AFIC from
running its
growing
business of
Islamic
Schools. The
committee
will consult
grass root
communities,
Societies
and state
Councils to
prepare a
draft
constitution,
and present
it to AFIC
within six
months. The
Committee is

Hafsah
Negussie
claims she
was held
against her
will at a
Brisbane
service
station
after a
worker
confused
company
policy and
refused to
serve her.
Ms Negussie,
a Muslim who
wears a veil
while in
public, said
she tried to
pay for her
goods and
go, but
claimed the
attendant
locked the
doors when
she
attempted to
leave.
The
incident,
which
occurred at
a BP service
station on
Brisbane's
southside in
December
last year,
was reported
to police
but no
official
report was
filed until
Ms Negussie
came forward
again in
April.
"I'm
Australian,
I was born
and raised
here, I know
my rights.
It's so
horrific,''
Ms Negussie
said.
A company
spokesman
for BP
service
stations
said the
business
required
customers to
remove
helmets,
hoodies or
large hats
before
approaching
the counter.
He said the
policy did
not extend
to religious
head wear
and admitted
the
attendant
involved had
misunderstood
business
requirements.

By Keysar Trad, Muslims
Australia (AFIC) Secretary
Please close
your eyes a
moment, now
Imagine a
spectacular
declaration
of peace and
love that
takes a week
to prepare!
Imagine the
young Muslim
children who
spent an
entire week
working on
the design,
under the
tutelage of
internationally
respected
candle
artist Mr.
Jorge Pujol!
Then open
your eyes to
see
respected
political
and
community
leaders from
all
persuasions
lighting
these
candles in
unison!
Then, climb
with me on a
60 ft
boom-lift
and you will
see the
image
reaching out
to heaven,
praying for
the rest of
the world to
experience
the peace
and security
we have and
telling the
world that
we need Love
to move
forward.
This is the
a project
that sat in
wait for
what seems
an eternity.
Finally,
with the
children of
Malek Fahad
Islamic
School,
artist Jorge
Pujol, a
little
financial
support from
AFIC and the
Islamic
Friendship
Association
of
Australia,
that dream
to project
love and
peace has
become a
spectacular
reality.
I am
grateful to
the
principal of
Malek Fahad
Islamic
School Dr.
Ray Barrett
and his
deputy
Stephen Lord
for seeing
the merit in
this project
and agreeing
to adopt it
and to
explain it
to the
school
pupils who
were very
eager to
participate.
I am
grateful to
the eager
pupils who
joined the
project and
to their
parents who
just as
eagerly gave
them not
only
permission,
but also
unwavering
support.
I am
grateful to
my
colleagues
on the
Executive
Committee of
the Muslims
Australia –
The
Australian
Federation
of Islamic
Councils for
supporting
the project.
I am also
grateful to
the Islamic
Friendship
Association
for the
patience and
perseverance
in waiting
until we
found the
right
partners for
this great
project. The
2000+
candles had
lay in their
cardboard
boxes
wanting so
eagerly to
come
together to
project a
message of
peace and
love, they
seemed to
corroborate
with the
summer’s
heat as
their wax
clung them
together in
their
protest at
the delay.
Then the
team from
Islamic
Friendship
tenderly
separated
the candles
reminding
them to be
patient for
a few more
moments so
that they
can make
this
wonderful
display.
I am
grateful to
the
political
and
community
leaders who
joined this
demonstration.

I
have received a request for assistance from Sgt
Alasdair MacLeod from the Upper Mount Gravatt to
identify a Muslim female who was subjected to a
torrent of racial abuse at Garden City at 1230 hours
today, 2/5/2013.
It appears the Muslim female wearing a burqua
accidentally bumped into a female with a pram. As a
result the female person and her male companion
subjected her to an outburst of racial and religious
abuse to the point it was necessary for other
members of the public to physically intervene.
Police and security attended but did not locate the
Muslim female however both offenders and several
witnesses have been identified.
Police have sufficient evidence to proceed with a
complaint based on the witnesses’ statements however
police need to locate/identify the female victim.
Prior to instigating any police proceedings Police
would like to try and locate the victim.
It would be appreciated if you could make inquiries
in an attempt to identify the female victim and
request her to contact me or Sgt Alasdair MacLeod at
the Upper Mount Gravatt.
Justin
Bieber Stops Turkey Concert Twice to Honour
Adhan
ISTANBUL:
Justin Bieber sure knows how to make his
Turkish fans happy.
Justin Bieber stopped his concert in
Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday night during
the Muslim call to prayer.
According to E! Online, Bieber paused his
show at Istanbul's sold-out Technical
University sports arena to allow for
audience members to pray (a practice Muslims
observe five times daily).
Concertgoers flooded Twitter with their
heartfelt comments about the singer's
decision to observe the prayer call.
The goodwill
Bieber engendered by pausing the show helped
offset some of the trouble he and his
entourage reportedly got into earlier on
Thursday at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen
Airport. According to ABC News, Bieber and
his crew did not present any of their travel
documents to security officials as they left
the airport. As a result, Bieber was checked
by security outside of Sabiha Gökçen Airport
and allowed to go on his way.
Bieber's current tour has not been without
some controversy. His planned show in Oman
was reportedly cancelled because the Muslim
nation deemed his stage act too sexy and
debauched.
Pope
Wants to Partner With Islam to Tackle
Poverty
Pope Francis
urged the West on Friday to intensify
dialogue with Islam and appealed to the
world to do more to combat poverty.
The new
pontiff made his appeal in an address to
diplomats accredited to the Vatican, sending
a message through them to the leaders of the
more than 170 countries with which the
Vatican has diplomatic relations.
Speaking in
Italian, he also made another impassioned
appeal for the defense of the poor and of
the environment, saying richer countries
should fight what he called "the spiritual
poverty of our times" by re-forging links
with God.
"How many
poor people there still are in the world!
And what great suffering they have to
endure!" he told the diplomats in the
Vatican's frescoed Sala Regia.
He urged them
to help keep religion central in public life
and promote inter-religious dialogue as a
catalyst for efforts to build peace.
"In this work
(peace building), the role of religion is
fundamental. It is not possible to build
bridges between people while forgetting
God," he said.
It is not
possible to
establish
true links
with God
while
ignoring
other
people.
Hence it is
important to
intensify
dialogue
among the
various
religions,
and I am
thinking
particularly
of dialogue
with Islam
Pope
Francis
"But the
converse is also true: It is not possible to
establish true links with God while ignoring
other people. Hence it is important to
intensify dialogue among the various
religions, and I am thinking particularly of
dialogue with Islam."
Francis, the
former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of
Argentina, said he was grateful that many
Muslim religious and civilian leaders
attended his inaugural Mass on Tuesday.
"Fighting
poverty, both material and spiritual,
building peace and constructing bridges:
these, as it were, are the reference points
for a journey that I want to invite each of
the countries here represented to take up,"
he said.
He underlined
the importance of protecting the environment
when he explained why he had decided to take
the name of St. Francis of Assisi, who is
associated with austerity, help for the
poor, and love of nature.
"Here too, it
helps me to think of the name of (Saint)
Francis, who teaches us profound respect for
the whole of creation and the protection of
our environment, which all too often,
instead of using for the good, we exploit
greedily, to one another's detriment," he
said.
Palestinian-American
Oday Aboushi drafted to the New York Jets
US: Offensive
lineman Oday Aboushi from the University of
Virginia was selected by the New York Jets
in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on
Saturday, making him one of the first
Palestinian-Americans to play in the NFL.
Aboushi, a
Brooklyn native, performed exceptionally
well both as a student and as an offensive
and defensive lineman when he attended
Xaverian High School. Intent on challenging
himself academically, he chose to attend the
University of Virginia which is known for
its academic reputation.
There he
played for four years, starting over three
dozen games and earning a selection to the
first team All-ACC squad.
He graduated
in the winter with a degree in sociology.
Standing at
6’5” and 310 pounds, Aboushi is known for
his ferocity and good blocking instinct on
the field. The Jets will hope to utilize him
in protecting the pocket.
Aboushi comes
from an arguably unique background. He is
the ninth of ten children born to
Palestinian
parents who immigrated to New York from
their town of Beit Hanina in the occupied
West Bank. Aboushi speaks English and
Arabic.
He is also a
devout Muslim, one of very few in the NFL.
During Ramadan, which fell every year during
training camp season at Virginia, he fasted
from sunrise to sunset every day. He was one
of almost a dozen Muslim athletes honored by
the U.S. Department of State for his
contributions in 2011.
Aboushi is
widely regarded as one of the top offensive
tackle draft picks in this year’s NFL Draft.
EGYPT: Egypt has
opened a no-alcohol hotel as the
first of its kind on the Red Sea
coast, also allocating an entire
floor for women only, amid
celebrations and doubts from
Islamists and the opposition.
Egyptian tourism managers hoped the
move would lure conservative Muslim
tourists to a region popular with
foreign and local visitors. The
three-star Le Roi Hotel is one of
the first “dry” hotels to open on
Egypt’s Red Sea coast. The hotel,
which has 134 rooms and 35 suites,
has allocated the top floor for
female security and a women-only
swimming pool to be located.
Yasser Kamal, the owner of the
hotel, played down its political
significance. “The idea of launching
a hotel without alcohol is not to
adhere to any particular movement,
but rather to provide a new kind of
tourism. Tourists have alcohol in
their countries, and they must find
other alternatives in Hurghada for
the purpose of diversity,” he told
the MENA state news agency, adding
that the hotel was open for all
nationalities and both Muslim and
Christian Egyptians.
A YouTube video had shown hotel
managers celebrating the launch by
lining up bottles of alcohol on the
curb outside the building before
pouring out their contents and
smashing them.
The opening comes as liberals voice
concerns that Islamists who came to
power last year were seeking to
limit personal freedoms and impose
conservative ideology.
They also worry that
such hotels could deter foreign
tourists, whose numbers dropped
sharply after the uprising that
ousted Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
Tourism, an important driver of
Egypt’s economy, has suffered
dramatically due to political unrest
that followed a 2011 uprising that
toppled former President Hosni
Mubarak. Rising fears have peaked
since an Islamist government, headed
by the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed
Morsi, was elected to power last
June.
Brotherhood’s alcohol policy
In recent months, different
government entities have announced
three separate plans to reduce
alcohol consumption, raising fears
among Egypt’s alcohol consumers
within both the expat and local
communities
Earlier in April, the Civil Aviation
Ministry announced it was
considering a ban on the sale of
alcohol in airport duty-free shops
after receiving complaints by
citizens and ministry officials,
daily Egypt Independent has
reported.
After this move, the New Urban
Communities Authorities announced
their decision last month to stop
issuing licenses for the sale of
alcohol in new Cairo suburban
settlements, due to alleged
complaints by local residents.
Moreover, the Investment Ministry
announced higher taxes on several
goods, including alcohol, over the
course of the coming 27 months, but
backed down after the move was
criticized by his opponents.
Twitter users also reacted to
alcohol-free hotel, with some
Egyptians lashing the countries
rulers for conservatism but
Islamists and Salafis praising the
opening of the hotel as “historic.”
The
irony of Muslim terrorism Op-ed by

It is truly
a sad state
when the
group
affected the
most by the
current
climate
following
the Boston
marathon
bombings
have to wait
for an
outsider to
speak some
sense on
their
behalf. It
is not that
Muslims lack
the capacity
to express
themselves
and engage
in an
intellectual
dialogue.
But when the
rhetoric all
over the
media
continues to
assert the
label
"radical
Islam"
whenever
these events
and their
like are
discussed,
being a
Muslim is
equated with
at the very
least being
suspicious.
What makes
it worse is
that radical
comes from
the Late
Latin,
meaning
"roots".
According to
the
Merriam-Webster
dictionary,
the term
radical
means, "of,
relating to,
or
proceeding
from a root;
of or
relating to
the origin".
In other
words, what
is being
said is that
the Tsarnaev
brothers and
anyone else
who
allegedly
gets
involved in
terrorist
activities
are the ones
who are
properly
practising
the root
teachings of
Islam. This
makes it
highly
problematic
that Muslims
have
embraced
such
terminology
as they try
to defend
their faith
and
community
from being
stigmatised
and defined
by these
acts.
Moreover,
the manner
in which
Tamarlan
Tsarnaev has
been
supposedly
"radicalised"
into an
"extremist"
form of
Islam gives
the
impression
that he was
really being
a practising
Muslim in
the extreme
sense. Thus
further
embedding
the idea
that Islam
is the
problem,
which is a
simpleton's
conclusion.

KB says: This recipe
was given to me by Bilkish Omar who calls it her
5 minute sauce – and she is absolutely right -
that's all it takes to make a sweet, sour and
chilly flavoured sauce that will certainly be
popular amongst your family and friends.
Red
Sauce Chutney
Ingredients
1. A bottle of Mrs.
Balls Chutney (470g)
2. One 250ml bottle of chilli sauce (Packo or
Crosse and Blackwell)
3. 200ml bottle tomato sauce
4. 1 tsp red crushed chillies or methi masala
mix (available at an Indian grocer)
5. 1 tsp salt
6. 1 tsp mustard seeds
7. 3 tsp crushed garlic
8. 2 tab curry leaves
9. 1 tsp green chillies
10. 1 tsp Jeero (cumin seeds)
11. 2 tab oil
Method
Heat the oil and add items 6 to
10, fry for a minute and then add items 1 to 5
and bring it to a simmer stage and allow to
simmer for approx 5 mins.
When the sauce is cool, you could
liquidize it if you like the sauce to be of a
smoother consistency.
A: This GI stands for "glycaemic index". The GI
is a ranking given to food to describe how quickly the
carbohydrate in the food is broken down and absorbed
into the bloodstream.
The GI scale ranges from 0 to 100.
• Lower numbers represent a low GI food
• Higher numbers represent a high GI food
Foods with a high GI are quickly broken down and
absorbed by the body and result in a rapid rise in blood
sugar levels. Low GI foods are broken down and absorbed
more slowly into the blood stream. They result in a
steady rise in blood sugar and insulin levels.
Eating low GI foods may:
• help to keep hunger at bay for longer after eating
• provide a gradual, continuous supply of energy from
one meal to the next
• help to keep blood sugar levels stable , by providing
a slower, more sustained release of sugar into the
bloodstream
