HALAL food
is now sold
at a dozen
McDonald's
restaurants
and bacon is
off the menu
at some KFC
outlets to
accommodate
the
religious
sensitivities
of
Australia's
growing
Muslim
population.
The Muslim
population
has soared
by 40 per
cent to
476,291 in
just five
years -
paving the
way for a
building
program of
schools,
mosques and
prayer rooms
in the
suburbs of
Sydney and
Melbourne.
Even the
country's
biggest
sports
stadiums,
including
ANZ Stadium
and the MCG,
have moved
to offer
multi-faith
prayer rooms
for devout
Muslims.
A KFC
spokesman
yesterday
said three
of its
restaurants,
including
two at
Bankstown
and
Punchbowl,
are
certified to
sell halal
food
prepared in
a way that
is
acceptable
to Muslims.
"KFC is
mindful of
responding
to customer
demand and
cultural
sensitivities
in a
balanced
way," the
spokesman
said.
Eight
McDonald's
restaurants
in Sydney
and four in
Melbourne
offer halal
food but,
unlike some
KFC outlets,
they have
not taken
bacon off
the menu.
"We are
pleased to
be able to
offer halal
menu items
in
restaurants
where there
is strong
demand from
the local
community,"
media
relations
manager Skye
Oxenham-Lupul
said.
"Our halal
restaurants
also provide
non-halal
menu items,
however
modified
storage and
food
preparation
procedures
have been
implemented
to ensure
that correct
segregation
is
maintained."
Figures from
the 2011
census show
a long-term
decline in
the number
of
Australians
who identify
as
Christians -
down from 89
per cent in
1976 to 61
per cent in
2011.
But it is
the push for
official
recognition
of sharia
law that
worried many
Australians
who made
submissions
to the
federal
parliamentary
inquiry into
multiculturalism.
More than
200
submissions
to the
inquiry
raised
concerns
about or
discussed
the question
of Islam in
Australia.

USA: THE
United States has denounced what it calls a
rising tide of both anti-Muslim and
anti-Jewish sentiment around the world.
It has urged all nations to ensure freedom
of religion.
In a wide-ranging annual report on religious
freedom, the State Department voiced alarm
at growing attacks against minority groups
and painted a bleak picture of nations such
as China, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea and
Saudi Arabia.
The freedom
to profess
and practice
one's faith,
to believe
or not to
believe or
to change
one's
beliefs,
that is a
birthright
of every
human being
John
Kerry
Secretary of State John Kerry, while
acknowledging that the US record was not
perfect, called religious freedom a
"universal value" as he presented the
report.
"The freedom to profess and practice one's
faith, to believe or not to believe or to
change one's beliefs, that is a birthright
of every human being," Kerry said.
"I urge all countries, especially those
identified in this report, to take action
now to safeguard this fundamental freedom,"
he said.
Kerry announced the appointment of Ira
Foreman, who served as President Barack
Obama's campaign outreach director to Jewish
voters, to fill the State Department
position of special envoy to combat
anti-Semitism.
The report said anti-Semitism was rising in
the media of Egypt and Venezuela, where
failed presidential candidate Henrique
Capriles has Jewish ancestry.
It also pointed to Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad's remarks questioning the extent
of the Holocaust.
"Anti-Muslim rhetoric and actions were
clearly on the rise, particularly in Europe
and Asia," the State Department report,
which covered 2012, said.
"Government restrictions, which often
coincided with societal animosity, resulted
in anti-Muslim actions that affected
everyday life for numerous believers," it
said.

The report
sharply criticised the record of Myanmar,
also known as Burma, on the same day that
President Thein Sein was meeting with US
President Barack Obama in a sign of US
support for the former general's democratic
reforms.
The State Department report said officials
in Myanmar fanned a wave of violence
targeting the mostly Muslim Rohingya
community and that Myanmar promoted
Theravada Buddhism over other faiths.
The survey said that religious freedom
declined further in China and that
authorities cracked down particularly hard
on the mostly Muslim Uighur community and on
Tibetan Buddhists, whose monasteries are
under close watch.
The report said Muslims also faced new
restrictions in 2012 in countries ranging
from Belgium, which banned face-covering
religious attire in classrooms, to India
where schools in Mangalore restricted
headscarves.
Graduating

possibly the youngest Arab doctor ever.
Iqbal El-Assaad
is the youngest medical doctor to graduate
from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar
(WCMC-Q) in its ten-year history. When Iqbal
was a toddler, she learnt algebra by
watching her older siblings study. Before
El-Assaad's fifth birthday, her favourite
pastimes were reading books and solving
mathematical problems.

If you were lucky enough to take part in today’s
Creswalk challenge, then be sure to follow through by:
• Enjoying a full stretch session - Try stretching as
soon as possible after you’ve crossed the finish line.
If you don’t get around to it, make sure you stretch at
home or even put on a yoga DVD and enjoy the relaxation
after the workout.
• Rehydrate – Drink lots of water. No doubt you would’ve
lost fluid while walking or running so it’s important to
replenish the body.
• Enjoy a healthy meal after the hard work – Have a
protein rich meal to aid in muscle recovery.
• Reward yourself – Be sure to acknowledge the hard work
you’ve done and reward yourself by continuing your
training on an ongoing basis so you can reap the
rewards..
Have your hubby or wife give you a nice massage and book
yourself and some friends in for another one during the
week if possible.
Kareema has just created a ground breaking new product,
the T-Mat for yoga, pilates, exercise, etc. A world
first, the idea behind it is to experience an
uninterrupted flow of movement while practising yoga
with all its beautiful poses and direction changes.
One side can be folded on top of the other for more
support under the knees or back during Pilates and it’s
a great tool to have for your floor work during exercise
and stretching.
Keep an eye out for the website launch over the next few
weeks or call 0404844786 for queries and purchases.
