Leaders from
Brisbane's
multicultural
communities
have been
appointed as
Community
Ambassadors
for the 2015
Asian Cup to
be held in
Australia.
The
Ambassadors
will help
make Asia’s
premier
football
tournament a
cultural
celebration
for the 2.5
million
people of
Asian
heritage
living in
Australia.
“Brisbane is
increasingly
home to
people that
have come
from right
across the
Asian
continent,”
said Local
Organising
Committee
CEO Michael
Brown.
“We are
encouraging
these people
to come and
support the
Socceroos in
January
2015, but
also to
support the
country of
their origin
and to use
the Asian
Cup as an
opportunity
to celebrate
their
cultures.
“Football,
more than
any other
sport,
crosses
geographic
and cultural
boundaries
and I am
sure in
January 2015
we will see
people of
all
backgrounds
sitting side
by side here
in Brisbane
watching the
biggest
football
tournament
Australia
has ever
hosted.
The
Ambassador
induction
was the
second to be
held in
Brisbane
with a total
of 16
Ambassadors
appointed
representing
11
communities.
The national
teams of
China,
Japan, South
Korea, North
Korea, Iran,
Iraq, Oman,
Kuwait,
Uzbekistan,
Saudi
Arabia,
Bahrain, UAE,
Oman, Jordan
and
Uzbekistan
will feature
in the AFC
Asian Cup
2015.
Mr Brown
said many of
the
Community
Ambassadors
had heritage
and language
skills from
these
countries
and would
work with
the Local
Organising
Committee to
promote the
event in
their local
communities.
Mr Brown
said more
than 250
Community
Ambassadors
would be
appointed
across the
five host
cities for
AFC Asian
Cup
Australia
2015 and
each would
assist
engage their
community in
their own
unique way.
“Our
Community
Ambassadors
come from a
variety of
backgrounds”
Mr Brown
said.
“We have
some who run
football
tournaments,
some who
manage
community
organisations,
others who
run
foreign-language
newspapers
here in
Australia.
The
commonality
between all
is that they
are leaders
of their
communities
and are
excited
about
contributing
to make the
2015 Asian
Cup a great
event for
all
Australians.”
AFC Asian
Cup
Australia
2015 will
take place
from January
9-31 in
Sydney,
Melbourne,
Brisbane,
Canberra and
Newcastle.
The
tournament
is being
jointly
funded by
the
Australian
Government
and the NSW,
Victorian,
Queensland
and ACT
Governments.
MELBOURNE:
A
delegation
from
the
UAE
Government
was
on

in
Melbourne
for
the
opening
of
Australia’s

on
Friday.
The
evening
marked
the
end
of a
four-year
journey
to
build
the
museum
by
founders
Moustafa

Maysaa
Fahour,
an

living

The

in
the

from
the
office
of
Ali
Al

the
religious
and
judicial
adviser
at
the
Ministry
of
Presidential
Affairs.
“The
support
that
we
have
tonight
is
phenomenal,”
said
Mr
Fahour.
“I
heard
a
comment
today
where
someone
said
that
we
as
Australian
Muslims
feel
proud
that
we
contributed
to
this
country.
“And
to
hear
people
from
other
faiths
say
the
museum
was
amazing
is,
for
me,
the
ultimate
goal.”
The
Fahours
began
the
project
in
2010
as a
way
to
counter
some
of
the
negative
stereotypes
directed
at
Australian
Muslims.
They
then
took
the
unconventional
step
of
managing
the
project
from
more
than
11,600
kilometres
away
after
they
relocated
to
Dubai
in
2012,
when
Mr
Fahour
accepted
a

from
the

Leighton

The
move
proved
fortuitous,
with
the
couple
tapping
into
the
UAE’s
thriving
creative
industry
to
aid
the
museum’s
completion.
They

She

to

at

“We
were
cooking

so
this

memories,”
Ms
El

said.
“But
tonight
was

triggered
fond
memories
from
the
Australian

“I
spent
a

in
the

and
it
was
fantastic,”
Mr
Hockey
recalled.
“I
visited
the
Grand

and
it
was
immensely
incredible.
It’s
really
something
that
needs
to
be
seen.”
Hailing
the
museum
as
“magnificent”,
Mr
Hockey
praised
the
UAE
businesses
involved
in
the
project,
calling
them
an
example
of
the
country’s
flourishing
creative
industry.
“Australia
and
the
UAE
have
a
very
deep
relationship
with
many
ties,
including
the
cultural,”
he
said.
“We
are
definitely
brothers
and
partners.
“This
project
shows
that
the
UAE
is
not
just
some
place
you
go
to
on
the
way
to
Europe.
It
is a
creative
hub
and
a
destination
in
its
own
right.”
Mr
Al
Hilali
echoed
the
treasurer’s
sentiments,
saying
the
museum
was
an
example
of
one
of
the
country’s
many
cultural
contributions.
“To
see
the
Sheikh
Zayed
Grand
Mosque
up
in
that
gallery
next
to
such
amazing
sites
as
the
Grand
Mosque
in
Mecca
and
those
in
India,
Iran
and
Morocco
is a
very
gratifying
and
proud
moment
for
all
of
us,”
he
said.
“I
wish
the
people
behind
this
museum
every
success.
With
Australian
Muslims
only
forming
5
per
cent
of
the
population,
I
hope
this
initiative
will
educate
many
people
about
the
faith,
its
history
and
contributions,
and
the
UAE
is
always
happy
to
support
such
initiatives.”

CONTROVERSIAL

Dutch MP
Geert
Wilders
(pictured

has revealed
that a new
party
defending
western
values will
be launched
in
Australia.
In a Youtube
message, Mr
Wilders said
he would
visit Perth
next year to
help launch
the
Australian
Liberty
Alliance,
which he
described as
a freedom
party.
“Many of you
are
disappointed
with current
political
parties and
have had
enough of
politicians
who sell out
western
civilisation,”
he said.
Mr Wilders,
whose
Freedom
Party is
popular in
the
Netherlands,
was the
subject of
rowdy
protests by
far Left
groups when
he toured
Australia in
February
last year.
His views
were
condemned by
several
political
leaders and
in some
cases he had
to find new
meeting
venues when
worried
hosts
cancelled
bookings.
His visit
was
sponsored by
the Q
Society, an
Australian
“Islam-critical”
group which
is
organising
an
international
seminar this
weekend in
Melbourne.
Mr Wilders
said he had
been working
with Q
Society
leaders on
the new
party, which
would
counter
views such
as all
cultures are
equal.
“It may seem
like a big
task but the
winds are
changing,”
he said.
Q Society
president
Debbie
Robinson
said her
group would
remain
separate
from the new
party as an
educational
civil rights
group.
“(However),
individuals
connected
with the
society are
in the
process of
forming a
political
movement,”
she said.

Myth No.
8:Muslim
immigrants
are angry at
the society
around them
In fact,
Muslim
immigrants
appear to be
MORE
satisfied
with the
world around
them, and
its secular
institutions,
than the
general
population.
Muslim
immigrants
in the
United
States are
more likely
to say they
are
“satisfied
with their
lives” (84%)
than average
Americans
are (75%) -
- and that
number rises
to 90% for
American-born
Muslims.
Even among
Muslims in
neighourhoods
where the
community
mosque has
been
vandalized -
- an
increasingly
frequent
occurrence -
- fully 76%
say that
their
community is
an
“excellent”
or “good”
place to
live.
This usually
extends into
pride in
national
institutions.
For example,
83% of
British
Muslims say
they are
“proud to be
a British
citizen,”
versus only
79% of
Britons in
general - -
and only 31%
of Muslims
agree that
“Britain’s
best days
are behind
her,” versus
45% of
Britons in
general.

Media Distorts Mars Fatwa,
Making Mons Olympus From a Molehill Opinion
Last week,
reports began circulating through some media
outlets that a fatwa committee underneath
GAIAE, the UAE’s General Authority of
Islamic Affairs and Endowment, had issued a
fatwa prohibiting Muslims from taking
one-way voyages to Mars and, by analogy,
from doing so with the Mars One project. The
story soon spread through the media like
wildfire. Mars One issued a respectful
response, requesting that GAIAE retract
their fatwa.
On February 24, GAIAE issued an
official press release. The press
release stated in unequivocal terms that the
Agency has no connection with “corrupting a
question and its [associated] fatwa on the
ruling of humans making a one-way voyage to
Mars that the media has been spreading and
attributing to the Agency.” GAIAE’s account
of the fatwa bears almost no resemblance to
the original article which the media outlets
had spread almost verbatim. This press
release calls into question the veracity of
the original report and subsequent reports
that still assert GAIAE’s fatwa.
Some individuals will be suspicious of
GAIAE’s clarification since it comes after
almost five days of silence. But even if we
did not have access to the original question
presented to the fatwa council, the
quotations attributed to it in the article
would lead us to deduce that the council had
addressed a question concerning Muslims
making a one-way trip to Mars where the
chance of surviving the voyage and staying
on Mars are so low that it is deemed
suicidal. The council’s prohibition is
appropriate for the very reasons they gave:
the body of textual evidence which lead
scholars to their consensus that
preservation of life is among the higher
objectives of Islam, and that it is unlawful
to engage in activities that present a
significant risk to life or limb.
We expect qualified muftis to answer this
way. Indeed: if GAIAE’s muftis had permitted
a trip that was so risky and reckless that
it was suicidal, we would question their
knowledge of Islamic law and their concern
for life.
The type of voyage Mars One plans is not
analogous to the type of voyage presented in
the article. Mars One aims to establish a
permanent and sustainable human colony on
Mars, as is apparent from its mission goals,
roadmap, and the risks and challenges
involved. It is obvious that this isn’t the
type of voyage addressed in last week’s
article, nor is it the type deemed
impermissible in GAIAE’s clarification.
A careless and malicious misreading of
GAIAE’s fatwa turned a rather mundane and
reasonable opinion into a sensational and
ridiculous absurdity. Unfortunately, this
misreading is just part of a broader
problem. There’s a ready market for fatwas
that are sensational – especially those that
are incendiary, salacious, involve sexual
practices of Muslim women or men, or –
better yet – all of the above. It’s a market
that thrives on demonstrably fraudulent
goods.

of the Catholic Church's appeal
in the 'Allah' case. Zainah has
been conferred one of France's
highest civilian awards
MALAYSIA: Advocacy group
Sisters in Islam (SIS) co-founder Zainah
Anwar, who will be conferred the French
government's highest award, the Legion of
Honour, regards it as a recognition of the
advocacy group's courage in standing up for
its cause.
"It is also a recognition that a group like
ours is regarded by many nationally and
internationally as a model of what the
leadership should be in a multi-ethnic and
multi-religious country like Malaysia.
"We should be coming together to share the
nation and not look at it as one winning
over the other," she told The Malaysian
Insider.
French Ambassador to Malaysia, Martine
Dorance, will confer the honour on Zainah
this evening, a press statement from the
embassy said.
The order, created in 1802 by Napoleon
Bonaparte, rewards men and women, French and
foreigners, for their distinguished merits
and the exemplary services rendered to
causes supported by France.
Previous Malaysian recipients of the award,
the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur,
include former Bersih co-chair and lawyer
Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Bank Negara
governor Tan Sri Zeti Aziz and AirAsia group
chief executive Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
A reception is also being held today in
conjunction with this year's International
Women’s Day.
Sisters in Islam’s main cause is to promote
an understanding of Islam that recognises
the principles of justice, equality, freedom
and dignity within a democratic nation
state.
Zainah and SIS have been criticised by some
Malay groups for challenging the traditional
understanding of Islam.
However, Zainah has been consistent in the
group's cause, which includes the freedom of
religion.
On Wednesday, she attended a flash mob
gathering in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, held by
a social activist group called Malaysians
for Malaysia to express solidarity with the
Catholic Church which is appealing against a
Court of Appeal ruling that validates a ban
on Catholic weekly Herald from using the
word "Allah".
Meanwhile Suri Kempe, programme manager for
SIS, said the movement was extremely proud
of Zainah, adding that her tireless advocacy
has created a space for and amplified the
voices of women.
"All over the world, women are reclaiming an
Islam that is just, equal and fair.
"International recognition of Zainah's work
is also a testament to the moral courage and
commitment it takes to challenge injustices,
particularly those committed in the name of
religion," she said.
Suri added that SIS continues to be inspired
by Zainah's passion and honours her
achievements by consistently promoting the
principles of gender equality, justice,
freedom and dignity in Islam and empowering
women as advocates for change. – March 7,

Man wins million-dollar
lawsuit for discrimination
DETROIT - Ali Aboubaker says he was
discriminated against by his employer has
won a major lawsuit. He says he was fired
from his job because of discrimination, and
it turned his life upside-down. Now he's
being awarded more than one million dollars.
The defended in the case is Washtenaw
County, which hired the man and later fired
him. His lawsuit alleges that other county
workers mistreated him because of his race
and religion.
Aboubaker is a Muslim from Tunisia and
maintenance worker for Washtenaw County
until he was fired. His lawyer, Shereef
Akeel, says a federal jury concluded that he
was a victim of discrimination on the job.
"You look past that, you look past all of
the strikes against him, his race and his
name and his beard and his ethnicity," Akeel
said.
Aboubaker had worked for the county since
1991, but alleged in the lawsuit that his
coworkers and superiors treated him
differently after September 11, 2001.
"He started getting the name-calling and
started being called names that really were
uncalled for," Akeel said. "Like terrorist
and things of that nature."
He also said that his bosses tried to
interfere with his midday prayer time and
with worship on Friday. he was passed over
for promotions and fired in 2008, accused of
insubordination.
"It left him homeless, he was destitute,"
Akeel said.
During the two-week trial, witnesses for the
county denied the charge of name-calling and
that bias was the reason he couldn't
advance. But the jury of six whites and one
African American sided with Aboubaker.
"You could see him, he was tearing up, he
wanted to kind of hide those tears away,"
Akeel said. "And then he made a nice quote:
'this is the America I know.'"
The award is for nearly 1.2 million dollars.
There is no word on whether the verdict will
be appealed.
Dutch Muslim politician
launching new Islamic party
HOLLAND: Arnoud van Doorn
(pictured above left), a former
far-right Dutch politician who later
accepted Islam and became a Muslim, has
announced his plans to launch a new Islamic
party in his native Holland.
The Islamic Party for Unity will be
contending for three seats in the upcoming
municipal elections on March 19.
Doorn, who once co-produced the anti-Islamic
film 'Fitna' along with former friend and
notorious anti-Muslim propagandist Geert
Wilders, told the NL Times on Sunday that it
was 'only logical' for Muslims to have
political representation.
“Our standpoints are based on the Islam. We
come up for minorities and the welfare of
animals,” he said. Asked about what his
party's stance would be on homosexuals,
Doorn said that all acts of affection in
general were private affairs and thus should
be kept private.
Doorn accepted Islam after criticisms of the
film 'Fitna' encouraged him to look into
Islam. Shortly after converting, he
performed the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. He
now acts as a voice for Holland's one
million Muslims, around 15,000 of whom are
like himself converts to the religion.
London mayor calls to take
Muslim children away from ‘extremists’
'It is the
strong view of many of those
involved in counter-terrorism
that there should be a clearer
legal position, so that those
children who are being turned
into potential killers or
suicide bombers can be removed
into care – for their own safety
and for the safety of the
public,' Boris Johnson said.
UK: The mayor of London, the
capital of the UK, has said that children
who are at risk of being brainwashed by
'radical' and 'extemist' Muslim parents
should be taken into care.
Writing in the Telegraph, Boris Johnson
challenged the political correctness of
British society which makes them reluctant
to judge someone else's culture, calling
this approach as 'utter rubbish, and a
monstrous inversion of what I mean by
liberalism.'
Stating that the authorities were watching
Muslims who returned from fighting in Syria
'like hawks' to monitor the ideas they may
have picked up there, he also stated his
belied that some young people were being
'radicalised at home, by their parents or by
their step-parents.'
'It is the strong view of many of those
involved in counter-terrorism that there
should be a clearer legal position, so that
those children who are being turned into
potential killers or suicide bombers can be
removed into care – for their own safety and
for the safety of the public,' he said.
Urging the British people to be 'less phobic
of intrusion into the ways of minority
groups and less nervous of passing judgment
on other cultures,' Johnson called on the
authorities to be 'ruthless' in tackling
behaviour that undermines British values.
Boris Johnson said these measures may be
necessary to prevent repeats of incidents
like the killing of military drummer Lee
Rigby, who was killed by two Muslims in
London last year in what they said was an
'act of war.' However, Johnson failed to
note that the parents of both of the two
killers were not Muslims, but were in fact
Christians.

KB says: If you
were wondering what tahini was - it’s a paste –
similar to peanut butter – and made from ground
sesame seeds. Although it is an essential
ingredient in hummus, tahini can be quite
versatile. It can be used in so many types of
dishes. This week I tried it in grilled chicken
breasts. I hope you like it.

Mula Nasruddin's wife goes to the Doctor, worried about
her husband's temper.
The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?"
Mrs Nasruddin says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do.
Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no
reason. It scares me. "
The Doctor says: "I have a cure for that. When it seems
that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of
water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish
and swish but don't swallow it until he either leaves
the room or calms down."
Two weeks later Mrs Nasruddin comes back to the doctor,
looking fresh and reborn.
Mrs Nasruddin says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea!
Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with
water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down!
How does a glass of water do that?"
The Doctor says: "The water itself does nothing. It's
keeping your mouth shut that does the trick".
Allah!
There is no god but He: of a
surety He will gather you
together against the Day of
Judgment, about which there
is no doubt. And whose word
can be truer than Allah's?
An old Indian told his
grandson, "My son, there is
a battle between two wolves
inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger,
jealousy, greed, resentment,
inferiority, lies and ego.
The other is Good. It is
joy, peace, love, hope,
humility, kindness, empathy,
and truth."
The boy thought about it,
and asked, "Grandfather,
which wolf wins?"
