The Eight Mile Plains Mosque hosted the community to their first ifthaar in the new Mosque building after it received its final approval for use of its facilities. A delicious spread of food was laid out in the very functional areas of the Mosque area.
Imam Sifet Omerovich has extended an invitation to the community to come along and join them in their next ifthaar on Wednesday 23 July and to visit the very imposing building that is already becoming a landmark in the area. All are welcome.
It is also intended to hold a grand opening ceremony on 8 November with Grand Mufti of Bosnia, Husein Kavazovic, in attendance.
To help equip the kitchen facilities, eating area and library as well as construct a fence, the Islamic Society of Eight Mile Plains needs to raise $75,000. For all those who are able to help, so that the deadline of the 8th of November for a grand ceremony can be realised, you are encouraged to donate using the following bank details:
On Friday evening, AMARAH once again hosted its annual community meal iftar at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in South Brisbane. This event, in its 6th year, is one of the most anticipated and loved events on the AMARAH annual calendar, so popular that many volunteers had to be turned away once again.
AMARAH members and friends cooked, hosted, served and enjoyed a meal with the some of the less fortunate members in our society. Over 70 people attended the iftar, many who are homeless, mentally and/or physically disabled, and/or living in desperate situations, financially, emotionally and physically.
People have often asked why AMARAH hosts an iftar at a church. From the very beginning, we recognised that there were many iftars already held by various mosques and community organisations for those in the Muslim community. However, we felt that the needs of our homeless and more disadvantaged friends in the wider Australian society should also be met, especially during this holy month of Ramadan.
Thus, when we heard about the fortnightly Friday community meal, which had been happening at the Church for over 30 years, we kindly asked their permission to join in. After all, one of the main objectives of Ramadan is to feel the hunger and thirst some people have to endure on a daily basis.
Additionally, the AMARAH team also felt this was a great opportunity for people who may have never met Muslims to begin that connection and have that conversation with us.
It was an enjoyable night for all- those who came hungry left with full bellies and smiles. Conversations were exchanged and new connections were formed. A few of our disadvantaged friends joked that they were also fasting and were eager to “break their fast” with us.
For the AMARAH volunteers, it was a humbling, yet rich experience; those who participated were not only thankful for the opportunity to make a little bit of difference to some people’s lives, but were also pleased to meet and engage with such wonderful people. This simple act of sharing a meal with our less fortunate friends truly exemplified the compassionate spirit of this blessed month.
AMARAH would like to thank the generous donors, the cooks, the serving and cleaning team and all the other volunteers for making this great night happen. And a big thanks to *Dave Andrews and his friends at St Andrew’s Anglican Church for allowing us the space and opportunity to host this dinner once again.
*Dave Andrews is a close friend and member of AMARAH and is a devout Christian. Again this year, he has decided to show his solidarity and fast alongside his Muslim friends. While fasting he reflected on the dua, Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim and compiled them into a book. He was also invited on the ABC- The Spirit of Things to record his reflections. It can be found here.
To celebrate
its 150
years of
serving
Queensland
and to
reciprocate
the many
invitations
that have
been
extended to
them over
the years,
the
Commissioner
of Police,
Ian Stewart
and the
Queensland
Police
Service
hosted
community
leaders from
the local
Muslim
community to
an ifthaar
dinner at
Michael's
Oriental
Restaurant.
With
a growing
Muslim
community on
the Gold
Coast, in
only three
years, the
Gold Coast
Muslim
population
has doubled,
growing from
an estimated
4,000 in
2011 to
8,000 in
2014.
The Salsabil
Charitable
Organisation
is in the
process of
purchasing a
property in
Currumbin to
establish a
Masjid to
accommodate
the needs of
Muslims in
the Southern
Gold Coast
and Northern
NSW.
It’s
not just
locals who
will benefit
either—the
Gold Coast
attracts a
significant
number of
Muslim
tourists
from South
East Asia
and the
Middle East
each year
and
international
students at
the nearby
Southern
Cross
University.
The planned
Masjid is
located at
the most
Southern end
of the Gold
Coast near
the NSW
border,
about 40kms
from the
existing
Masjid in
Arundel. It
is close to
the Southern
Cross
University,
two major
hospitals,
the airport
as well as
several
tourist
attractions.
The proposed
site for the
new Masjid
is
approximately
5,000m˛. It
is comprised
of two
buildings
with a total
of 2,500m˛
and car
parking
facilities.
Building one
will be the Masjid
proper,
while
building two
will be used
as a
community/activity
centre. The
community
centre will
be used for
Quran and
Arabic
lessons and
community
functions,
including
youth
activities,
women’s
activities,
dawah
activities,
and iftaar
during the
month of
Ramadan.
The new
masjid will
be a
particular
welcome to
the
residents of
Northern
NSW, an area
where the
Muslim
population
is growing,
yet has no
formal
community
meeting
place or
Masjid
available.
The Southern
Gold Coast
is also home
to a growing
number of
Muslims as
well as
reverts, and
the new
Masjid will
help cater
to their
educational
and other
needs.
The
organisation
will be
taking
donations at
Juma on
Friday 25th
July at the
Gold Coast
Masjid. It
will also be
holding a
fundraiser
at the
Brisbane

on Saturday
30 August.

On 12 July, the UAE Embassy sponsored Iftar at the Gold Coast Mosque. It was attended by over 1,200 people who enjoyed a sumptuous dinner. The UAE Embassy has been sponsoring Iftar at the Gold Coast Mosque for the past 5 years.
In
this holy
month of
Ramadan, the
tragedies
affecting
Muslims
around the
world are
especially
poignant,
particularly
for
Australian’s
in the
community
who have
relatives
still living
abroad.
As many of
you would be
aware, The
Department
of Foreign
Affairs has
issued
travel
warnings to
a number of
conflicted
regions.
Understandably,
families are
concerned
that their
travels may
cause them
difficulties
upon their
return to
Australia.
There is
much
confusion,
encouraged
by the
mainstream
media, about
the powers
that
Commonwealth
Agencies
such as
Australian
Secret
Intelligence
Organisation
(ASIO), the
Department
of Foreign
Affairs &
Trade (DFAT)
or the
Australian
Federal
Police (AFP)
are allowed
to exercise.
We would
like to
remind the
community
that if any
of these
agencies do
contact you,
whether for
a friendly
chat or to
question you
about your
travels, you
are allowed
to exercise
certain
rights.
• You
are not
obliged
to speak
with
them
without
first
contacting
a lawyer
of your
choice
or a
family
member.
• You
should
always
ask the
person
contacting
you for
their
identification
and
their
business
card.
•
Without
a
warrant,
you are
not
required
to
invite
them
into
your
home. In
the
event
that you
are
required
to go
with
them
however,
you
should
leave
their
business
card
with a
family
member.
• Even
if you
have
done
nothing
wrong,
it may
be
prudent
to
politely
ask them
to speak
to your
lawyer
first.

THE high
performance
coach who
helped
Sydney
Roosters win
last year’s
premiership
has backed
Sonny Bill
Williams to
devour one
of the
toughest
challenges
known to any
NRL player:
playing a
full game on
an empty
stomach and
without
hydration.
In the midst
of the
Islamic holy
month of
Ramadan,
Williams —
who became a
Muslim six
years ago —
cannot eat
or drink
during
daylight
hours.
With
Saturday’s
clash
against
Penrith
scheduled
for 3pm, SBW
will face a
fierce
examination
as he start
the game
with nil by
mouth for
eight hours
leading-up
to the
kick-off.
Sunset is
not due
until about
20 minutes
after
full-time,
meaning
Williams
must also
wait to
refuel after
what is
certain to
be an
intense
battle
against the
competition’s
co-leaders.
But having
witnessed
Williams
excel under
identical
conditions
12 months
ago, former
Roosters
head of high
performance
and sports
science,
Lachlan
Penfold, has
no doubt
history will
repeat
itself at
Allianz
Stadium.
Now working
with French
rugby outfit
Narbonne,
Penfold said
Williams was
able to push
through the
match and
weekday
training
sessions
because of
his mental
fortitude.
“It’s
probably
something
that Sonny
doesn’t get
enough
credit for,”
Penfold
said.
“Whenever
he’s doing
it tough
physically,
he always
finds a way
to get
though
mentally.
Half the
battle (on
Saturday) is
going to be
mental.
“I’m not
pretending
to know
anything
about
religion,
but I know
Sonny is
strong
enough to
make this
sacrifice.
I just think
it’s
unbelievable
what he’s
doing and
the way he
trained up
on the
Central
Coast
Jared
Warea-Hargreaves
“I remember
we had one
instance
last year,
where he was
crook for
two days
leading into
a match and
he managed
to take the
field and
really star
for us.”
Roosters
coach Trent
Robinson has
been
reluctant to
discuss the
issue and
kept his
silence on
Friday.
Williams has
already
played one
match during
Ramadan this
year; but
that was a
night
fixture
against the
Sharks
during which
he was
allowed to
refuel.
The barren
game-day
preparation
would still
have been
difficult,
yet Williams
was still
able to last
80 minutes
and
contribute
two line
break
assists, 25
tackles and
13 runs for
106 metres.
“Obviously
it’s not
ideal for
any
athlete,”
Penfold
said.
“I’ve got
two here (at
Nabonne) who
are going
through it
at the
moment,
during
pre-season
training.
What he does
with his
religion is
remarkable.
We always
say that
he’s the
man. When
you see
something
like that
you realise
how mentally
tough he is.
It’s
something
that I can’t
really talk
about
because I’ve
never
experienced
it.
Jared
Warea-Hargreaves
“I remember
we had a
chat to
Sonny about
it at the
start of
last year
and just
talked about
certain
things he
needed to do
to get
through the
month.
“I had the
feeling that
it was
something he
had done
before, so
he knew how
to handle
his own
body. We did
not make any
adjustments
to training.
We treated
him the same
way as we
would have
normally.”
Williams
received a
taste of
what to
expect
during the
Roosters’
four-day
training
camp at
Avoca Beach
last week.
Team mate
Jared Warea-Hargreaves
felt
inspired by
his Kiwi
compatriot’s
ability to
push through
some
gruelling
training
sessions.
“I just
think it’s
unbelievable
what he’s
doing and
the way he
trained up
on the
Central
Coast,”
Warea-Hargreaves
said.
“What he
does with
his religion
is
remarkable.
We always

he’s the

A Bendigo
businesswoman
behind a
vehement
anti-mosque
Facebook
page has
lost a
tribunal bid
to stay
anonymous.
In a tearful
and rambling
appearance
at the
Victorian
Civil and
Administrative
Tribunal
today,
Monika
Evers, a
co-administrator
of the Stop
The Mosque
in Bendigo
page,
claimed she
had been ‘‘villified’’
online by
people who
supported
the Bendigo
mosque
proposal,
feared for
her safety
and wanted
her name
kept out of
the media.
But VCAT
deputy
president
Mark Dwyer
said there
was
‘‘insufficient
evidence’’
to support
her claims
of being
threatened
and that Ms
Ever’s
‘‘perception’’
of biased,
pro-mosque
media
reporting
was not
grounds to
have her
name
suppressed.
When he
announced
his decision
Ms Evers, a
business
consultant,
withdrew her
planning
objection to
the mosque.
Her advocate
Andrew Moyle
told the
tribunal:
‘‘She does
not think
she can
carry
through with
this. To her
the fears
are real.’’
Other
objectors to
the
two-level,
$3m mosque
on Bendigo’s
outer-eastern
fringe will
tell the
tribunal the
planning
application
— passed by
a majority
of Bendigo
councillors
last month —
breaches
regulations
concerning
parking,
noise and
traffic. The
Australian
Islamic
Mission, who
operate a
large mosque
in Sydney’s
Punchbowl,
have also
included a
cafe and
sports hall
in their
plans for
the
building.
The land is
vacant.
Queensland-based
Far Right
lobby group
Restore
Australia
has paid for
a Sydney
lawyer often
used in
anti-mosque
hearings,
Robert
Balzola, to
appear at
future VCAT
hearings
where the
objections
will be
heard.
Last month
Fairfax
Media
revealed
Restore
Australia
had funded
opponents of
the Bendigo
mosque,
including Ms
Evers and
Julie
Kendall, her
co-administrator
on the
Facebook
page, to
help their
campaign.
Restore
Australia is
run by
former One
Nation
candidate
Mike Holt, a
Vietnam
veteran, and
Charles
Mollison, a
former
lieutenant-colonel
who also
served in
Vietnam.
Both men
live on the
Sunshine
Coast.
Yesterday Mr
Mollison was
stopped by
police in
Bendigo
after he
drove a
truck
bearing
anti-mosque
slogans
through the
city while
broadcasting
Muslim
calls-to-prayer
from a
loudspeaker.
Restore
Australia
also
administers
a subgroup
called
Islam4Infidels,
which issues
written
advice for
people or
communities
wanting to
campaign
against
mosques. Mr
Holt said
Restore
Australia
shared
material and
ideology
with two
groups in
Britain -
the English
Defence
League,
known for
anti-Islamic
street
protests,
and Liberty
Great
Britain, a
new
far-right
political
party.
Ms Evers
told the
tribunal
today that
media
reporting of
the issue
had ignored
planning
objections.
‘‘Instead we
were
vilified as
racists and
bigots.’’
She received
three death
threats on
the
anti-Islam
Facebook
page she
helped
create as
well as
posts from
people
hoping her
or her
children got
cancer, she
claimed. She
told the
tribunal she
had been
interviewed
by ASIO and
the
Australian
Federal
Police in
Bendigo but
could not
provide
proof of the
threats or
the
interviews.
At various
times during
her
testimony Ms
Evers had to
stop or
leave the
tribunal
room because
she was
crying or
suffering
nose bleeds.
Under
questioning
from a
lawyer
representing
the Islamic
Mission of
Australia,
Chris
Townshend,
Ms Evers
admitted she
had a
personal
blog about
Christianity
and had
written that
multiculturalism
could not
work
alongside
Islam. She
also
admitted
that in her
own
objection to
the council
about the
mosque she
had said it
would be a
threat to
the ‘‘way of
life’’ in
Bendigo and
had included
written
material
about
refugees and
migrants to
Australia
and
Centrelink
benefits.
‘‘You have
chosen to be
involved in
the
campaign,’’
Mr Townshend
said. ‘‘With
that choice
comes
responsibility
and with
that choice
comes
awareness of
what you are
getting
into.’’ He
said Ms
Evers was a
‘‘publicist’’
for the
anti-mosque
campaign.
It
took a
petition
from local
residents to
get the
Brisbane
City Council
to reverse
its initial
decision not
to replace
soccer goal
posts at
Svoboda
Park,
Kuraby.
The park has
been a
popular site
for informal
ball games
for many
years.

Obama humiliates Muslims
at Ramadan iftar: Analyst
By Dr Kevin Barrett
US: On Monday, President
Barack Obama invited American Muslim leaders
to an iftar (fast-breaking dinner) at the
White House.
The invitation was a trap.
Obama ambushed the Muslim invitees by
unleashing Israel’s viciously racist
ambassador, Ron Dermer, as the first speaker
at the event. Dermer has famously said that
Arabs and Muslims have “a cultural tendency
towards belligerency” that is “deeply
imbedded in the culture of the Arab world
and its foremost religion.” He even
celebrated “the refusal of commuters on a
Minneapolis flight to fly until three Arab
passengers were removed from the plane”
merely because they were Arab.
Imagine a 1980s-era South African ambassador
saying that blacks have “a cultural tendency
towards belligerency” and celebrating racist
whites who refused to fly on the same plane
as blacks. Such a demented bigot would have
been put on the next plane back to South
Africa – even by the right-wing Reagan
Administration.
But instead of expelling the racist
psychopath Dermer, the reputedly liberal
Obama invited him to the White House – to be
opening speaker at the President’s biggest
annual event supposedly honoring Muslims!
What’s worse, at the same time Dermer was
speaking to the appalled captive audience of
VIP Muslims at the White House, Israel was
slaughtering children in Gaza. Mental images
of the photos of children with their heads
blasted off or their entrails hanging out
would be enough to ruin the appetite even of
someone who has been fasting all day. And
those are the images that come to the mind
of every even slightly aware Muslim on earth
when faced with the likes of such Zionist
war criminals as Ron Dermer.
When Netanyahu appointed Dermer ambassador
to the US, even many Israelis were
horrified. They correctly saw that the
appointment signaled that Netanyahu had
closed the door to even the slightest chance
at peace.
Israel’s leading newspaper Haaretz reported
on Dermer’s appointment under the headline:
“Israel’s next U.S. envoy: Right-wing
neo-con with close ties to Bush family.”
According to Haaretz, “Dermer’s positions on
policy are far more extreme than
Netanyahu’s. European and American officials
have expressed shock by his positions on the
settlement issue, on peace talks with the
Palestinians, and on the principle of an
independent Palestinian state.”
So when the Muslim guests at the White House
Ramadan iftar saw who Obama had invited as
keynote speaker, they must have felt like
vomiting up their first meal in 24 hours.
Then it got worse.
Obama followed Dermer by standing before the
nauseated guests and doing his best to
justify Israel’s ongoing genocidal slaughter
of the children, women, and men of Gaza.
Israel, according to Obama, has “the right
to defend itself.”
By uttering that genocidal lie, Obama
condemned himself as a war criminal. The
truth is that Israel is not defending
itself. It is committing aggression, and has
been trying to eliminate Palestine and the
Palestinians for more than six decades. Ever
since the Zionists invaded Palestine, they
have been the aggressors, and their
aggression has been in service to genocide.
It is the Palestinians who have the right to
defend themselves against genocide.
Lying about the most basic fact about the
occupation of Palestine – that the Zionists
are the aggressors, and the Palestinians are
defending themselves, their homes, their
land, their children, and their honor – is a
war crime. That crime is called “propaganda
for genocide.” It is the crime of Dr.
Goebbels, the Nazi propagandist who, like
Obama, tried to justify an ethnic cleansing
by lying about who was doing what to whom
and why.
Though I am one of America’s better-known
Muslims, I did not receive an invitation to
the White House iftar... which is probably
just as well. Had I been present, I would
have attempted a citizen’s arrest of both
Dermer and Obama for complicity in genocide.
Being wrestled to the ground by the Secret
Service, and locked up for
who-knows-how-long, would have put a damper
on my career as TruthJihad.com’s White House
correspondent.
Seriously, the President’s decision to
invite the lunatic racist war criminal
Dermer to speak at the White House iftar was
a colossal, monumental blunder. Such
ham-handed, shoot-yourself-in-the-foot
politics is uncharacteristic of Obama. In
the past, the US President has made several
gestures aimed at trying to normalize
US-Muslim relations, which were nearly
destroyed by the Zionist false flag
operation of September 11th, 2001. (Polls
show that roughly 80% of the world’s Muslims
know that the official narrative of 9/11 is
a big lie, yet despite the work of groups
like Architects and Engineers for 9/11
Truth, most non-Muslim Americans still give
at least some credence to the ludicrous and
now-fully-falsified official story.)
But since Monday’s botched, genocidal
Ramadan iftar, Obama has forfeited what
little good will he previously earned by
pretending to strike a different pose from
that of Zionist-driven 9/11 criminals Bush
and Cheney. After this, Muslims all over the
world are going to see not just Obama, but
America, as a 100%-Zionist-controlled
existential enemy.
What can Obama have been thinking? After
all, the President is known to loathe
Netanyahu and Dermer. (Dermer was
Netanyahu’s man in Washington, DC who with
the help of Zionist gangsters like Sheldon
Adelson, and an army of
black-box-voting-machine hackers, tried
unsuccessfully to throw the 2012 election to
Mitt Romney.)
Maybe Obama was hoping that one of the
Muslim guests would throw a shoe at Dermer...
or worse.
I would have been more than happy to do so.
So Obama, if you want to see some fireworks
at the White House, invite me... and put the
genocidal criminal and 9/11 suspect Ron
Dermer in the same room.

Muslims shun Obama Ramadan
dinner
US: Muslim American groups and individuals
on Monday boycotted US President Barack
Obama’s Iftar dinner over his
administration’s anti-Muslim policies.
A large number of Muslims instead
participated in a protest outside the White
House against US government policies,
according to reports published in US media.
In the past, the White House has held
several Ramadan dinners with prominent
members of Muslim groups and various eminent
Muslim Americans.
On Monday, some American Muslims and
officials from certain Islamic states still
attended the Ramadan dinner, which has been
seen as an opportunity to engage with
officials in power, but many American
Muslims refused to participate in the event
amid growing concern that US policies keep
getting worse and they would be complicit if
they attended the dinner.
According to Firedoglake, over a hundred
Muslim advocates, activists, and scholars
signed an open letter explaining why they
believed a boycott was necessary.
They said the dinner “represents nothing
more than an attempt to whitewash state
violence, absolve government institutions
from taking responsibility and creating
mechanisms of accountability and
transparency for the civil rights violations
that have been perpetrated towards Muslims
and Muslim Americans, and Americans at
large, beginning from even before the onset
of the War on Terror.”
In particular, Muslims intend to protest
complete US support for Israel’s atrocities
against the Palestinians in Gaza as well as
the mass surveillance being targeted at
Muslim Americans.
Sharia-compliant banking
takes on conventional banks
DUBAI:
Islamic banking is growing quickly, and
firms are developing Sharia-compliant
products designed to challenge conventional
banking.
Islamic banks want to open up markets for
investors who insist on banking that
conforms with Islamic law, but they also
want to appeal to other investors.
Multinational banks appear equally keen to
expand their offerings to access a growing
market.
The BBC's Middle East correspondent Mark
Lobel reports from Dubai.
'Prejudices stem
from not being introduced to real Islam
properly,' said Veronique Cools, a
25-year-old Belgian convert to Islam.
BELGIUM:
Veronique Cools, a 25-year-old Belgian
convert to Islam, has has helped over 1,000
people who have accepted Islam in the past 8
years.
Cools, who accepted Islam herself at a very
young age after being influenced by her
Muslim friends and researching into the
religion, turned her home into an Islamic
center for Belgian Muslims seeking to learn
more about their religion.
Saying that she herself had to overcome many
prejudices when looking into Islam, Cools
then successfully helped her family overcome
them too. Now her close family are also
Muslims.
'Prejudices stem from not being introduced
to real Islam properly,' she said as she was
preparing iftar food packets for visiting
Muslims to break their Ramadan fasts. 'As
Muslims we need to explain ourselves to
society a lot better.'
The center now has more than 1,000 members,
most of them Belgian women, and is open for
all of Belgium's 50,000 Muslims.
This
title deals with life in Palestine today - what it is really
like - day to day, from the Orwell Prize winning author,
Raja Shehadeh. It is often the smallest details of daily
life that tell us the most.
And so it is under occupation in Palestine.
What most of us take for granted has to be carefully thought
about and planned for: When will the post be allowed to get
through? Will there be enough water for the bath tonight?
How shall I get rid of the rubbish collecting outside? How
much time should I allow for the journey to visit my cousin,
going through checkpoints? And big questions too: Is working
with left-wing Israelis collaborating or not? What affect
will the Arab Spring have on the future of Palestine? What
can anyone do to bring about change? Are any of life's
pleasures untouched by politics?

KB says: This last of
the Ramadan treats is an adaption of a recipe by
WaheedaTayob taken from her highly recommended
recipe book Savoury. I used chicken as a
change from the traditional mince filling. Just
a note - the quantities given in this recipe
could comfortably feed a very large family, so
you could freeze the second of the two rolls for
future use if you need to.

Q: Dear Kareema, my son is
an avid soccer and tennis player but it seems
like he is almost always suffering from a
sports-related injury in the colder months. Is
that a common thing?
A: Sports injuries tend to peak during
the winter months even though you may be taking
part in an indoor sport or working out in the
relative comfort of the indoors. It comes back
to taking extra time and care in your pre- and
post-workout routine (which can avoid potential
injuries and setbacks).
I’m sure that your son’s coach
will get them to warm up & stretch before &
after each match, but get him to take a few
extra minutes for himself to further stretch &
lengthen muscles.
Be sure to warm up and cool down
gradually and stay warm during your workout.
Take care if you have a
pre-existing injury or health issues (be sure to
always get clearance from your GP before
undertaking any form of exercise).
Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate
some more – even in the cooler months when you
may not feel like your sweating, it is
imperative to drink up!
