shrouded in mystery, and for
some, controversy. But how
many Australians have ever
stepped inside one?
Three-part series premieres

on SBS.
In an Australian TV first,
cameras were given
unprecedented 24-hour access
into an Australian mosque
for SBS’s new three-part
documentary series, The
Mosque Next Door.
Brisbane’s Holland Park
Mosque is one of the oldest
in Australia. Located near
Pauline Hanson’s former
electorate when she was
first elected to federal
parliament, the mosque has
found itself in the firing
line amidst growing fears
from some in the wider
community that Islam is
contrary to the ‘Australian
way of life’.
Now, the mosque throws open
its doors for a look at a
year in the life of the
people inside – through the
realities of life, love and
a struggle for acceptance in
modern Australia.
The series introduces
cricket-loving patriarch,
mosque leader Imam Uzair;
his best mate and community
fix-it man, Ali Kadri; and a
diverse congregation,
including outspoken women’s
advocates Galila and her
daughter Maryam, and fourth
generation mosque goer,
Janeth. Meet ex-bikie
Robbie, who served time
behind bars before
converting to Islam five
years ago and is now a
community worker and youth
mentor; and Lamisse, who
turned her back on Islam in
her teens but now as a young
woman is reconciling her
faith and identity.
The Mosque Next Door
explores the tough,
hot-button issues facing
Muslim communities across
Australia – Islamophobia,
radicalism, viral online
videos of extremists,
terrorism-related
investigations, the role of
women in the mosque, and how
some of the more traditional
aspects of Muslim faith fit
in with a modern Australian
way of life.
The series also reveals the
rarely seen lighter side to
the community: Ali is
searching for true love via
a locally renowned
matchmaker, and Janeth is on
a mission to erect a new
flagpole which has impacts
on the beloved ‘MCG’ (mosque
cricket ground).
As the mosque faces
pressures from both inside
and out, the congregation
come together with community
spirit, camaraderie and of
course, Halal Snack Packs.

On the evening of the 6th
October at the Islamic
College of Brisbane, there
was an awards and
presentation night to
celebrate the success of the
newly-formed Logan Roos
football team. Impressively
- in their very first year
of competing, the Logan Roos
won the premiership in
Division 2 of the South East
Queensland Football League.
The club was established and
supported as a shared
initiative between the
Islamic Council of QLD (ICQ)
and Youth Connect QLD, to
provide a welcoming and
inclusive environment for
young people of migrant and
refugee backgrounds to enjoy
fitness, fun and football.
The event was graced by the
presence of the Queensland
Health Minister, the
Honourable Cameron Dick MP –
who discussed the importance
of community harmony and
integration. There was also
a presentation from Sisters
Support Services, an ICQ
supported organisation which
promoted and shared various
initiatives aimed at aiding
women in the community.
This well-managed and
well-attended community
event was conducted to
acknowledge our youth on
their amazing achievement.
Awards were given out and
the audience was informed of
all the incredible on-field
and off-field endeavours of
the players, mangers and all
associated parties who made
the performance of the team
so impeccable.
A key element driving these
community efforts forward
are the dedicated facilities
at Oates Park, Woodridge.
Leased from the Logan City
Council, the ground is
managed by ICQ. Various
affiliate organisations like
Sisters Support Services and
Youth Connect also operate
out of this venue.
We thank everyone who
participated and helped
organise this event. In the
coming year, ICQ and Youth
Connect are looking to
expand their community
sporting offering with 4
additional teams planned
including our first Ladies
Team. We hope to see our
community rise from strength
to strength.
The Ipswich District Muslim
community leaders were
invited to a morning tea at
the Yamanto Police Station.
It was an opportunity for
community leaders to meet
the new District Officer,
Superintendent Brian Huxley
(pictured right) and
members of his senior
management team.
District Officer,
Superintendent Huxley, said
in his address, that it was
critical for police to build
positive relationships with
members of the community if
they (the police) wanted to
be effective at delivering
their core responsibility of
safety and security.
The Superintendent thanked
everyone for attending the
meeting and said it not only
demonstrated the confidence
the community had in its
police, but was very
respectful to the local
police.
Supt. Huxley pointed out
that the focus of the QPS
was community safety which
is underpinned by our
priority to ‘Build
relationships across
Community’ and that it is
only with the help and
support of the community
that we can ensure our
community remains safe.
He looked forward to
building stronger
relationships by ensuring
police and community leaders
maintain an open and honest
dialogue, that Ipswich
police continued to respond
appropriately to calls for
service or security issues
from the community, and
through police participation
in community consultative
groups and supporting
community events and
festivals within Ipswich
District.

hosting the morning tea
meeting with Muslim
community leaders and
acknowledged again the
support from the community
leadership who attended the
morning tea.
It's one of the most storied
squads of the New South
Wales Police Force, but
Sydney GP Jamal Rifi won't
be sorry to see it go.
The Lebanese community
leader says Sydney's
legendary Middle Eastern
Organised Crime Squad (or
MEOCS) should "never have
been established in the
first place - or at least
not been given such a
terrible title".
"Criminals are criminals and
you fight the crime itself,
you don't fight the ethnic
background of the crime."
Eleven years since it was
first set up, MEOCS is about
to slip into a new skin. It
will be folded into a new,
expanded and renamed squad
as part of a sweeping
restructure of the state's
Crime Command, echoing the
fate of the Asian crime
squad, which was dissolved
in 2014.
Rifi will not be alone in
celebrating MEOCS' imminent
eclipse. While supportive of
the policing aims that lay
behind it, he and other
ethnic community leaders
have long argued that it was
counterproductive as a
branding exercise. It
alienated significant
sections of a community
which police needed to get
onside, they say. And the
name gave rise to a perverse
form of peacocking among its
targets.
"To be honest, I reckon it
didn't help the police at
all, I reckon it helped the
criminals," Rifi says. "It
was a badge of honour for
them, they used to tattoo
MEOC on themselves and, if
the government had called it
something like 'Unicorns',
none of them would have been
running around getting
tattoos of unicorns."

on-line programs in 2018.
The programs are sure to be

qualifications of their kind
in Australia. They aim to
fill a void in formal,
accredited teacher training
and professional learning
programs.
The first program, a Master
of Teaching (secondary)
provides a pathway to
becoming a teacher in
Australia with a
specialisation in Islamic
pedagogy for those with a
relevant undergraduate
degree.
The second program, a
Graduate Diploma in
Education (Islamic
Education) offers
professional learning for
existing teachers aligned
with contemporary
educational polices,
standards and practices,
within the framework of
Islamic pedagogy.

The Islamic Friendship
Association of Australia
founder says women can
benefit from joining a
polyamorous relationship
when there's a shortage of
eligible men.
'If a woman is interested in
him and if his wife is okay
with that situation, then it
becomes his duty towards
society to do his bit,' he
told Daily Mail Australia on
Monday.
'They'll have a husband. A
lot of people think about it
as the man getting the
benefit.
'I don't see it as the man
getting the advantage. It is
about a man taking up a
social responsibility.'
Mr Trad, who has previously
called for polygamy to be
allowed in Australia to
accommodate an aspect of
Sharia law, now says he
doesn't want the law changed
to allow men to have
multiple wives despite
personally supporting the
concept.
Instead, he wants married
men to have multiple female
partners at the same time,
without society judging them
harshly.
'Society will stigmatise the
man, society has stigmatised
the man a lot in these
situations but what I'm
saying here is the woman
should not be stigmatised,'
he said.
'There are a number of women
who opt for these plural
relationships because they
give them the best of what
they want out of life and
they still have the benefit
of a relationship.'
Mr Trad, who was previously
president of the Australian
Federation of Islamic
Councils, told his Facebook
followers husbands who took
second wives were mature men
doing their bit for women.
'Few seem to get it, taking
a second wife is a huge
sacrifice imposed on the man
and is a great liberator of
women, it makes him less of
a dependent child and more
like a man who knows that he
has a responsibility to
alleviate spinsterhood,' he
said.
However, Mr Trad declined to
support the idea of women
having multiple husbands
because that was against
Islam.
'There are religions that
allow that. Good luck to
them. My religion doesn't,'
he said.
Polyandry, where women can
have multiple husbands, is
practised in remote villages
in India.
Mr Trad is also a Muslim
leader campaigning against
gay marriage as Australians
take part in a $122 million
postal vote survey on the
issue.
His wife Hanifeh last year
insisted she would not mind
if her husband married
another woman, saying she
has no right to stand in his
way.
He told the Seven Network
the law should be changed in
Australia to allow men to
have up to four wives.

has correctly
referred the
barbaric act of
the Myanmar
Government
forces as a
`textbook
example of
ethnic
cleansing” and
many world
leaders have
called it a
genocide.
Like many
Australians and
others, I fully
share your
assessment of
the grave
situation in
Rakhine state of
Myanmar and fear
of dangerous
radicalization
of humiliated,
stateless and
desperate
Rohingyas. As
reported by ABC,

correctly said,

concerned that
the persecution
of a significant
group of Muslim
Rohingyas will
be used by ISIS
and other
terrorist groups
as part of their

Southwest
airlines passenger dragged off flight over
dog allergies claims racial profiling
A professor
who was filmed being dragged off
a Southwest Airlines flight in
Maryland says she believes she
was a victim of racial
profiling.
US: Anila Daulatzai, who is Muslim, said
on ABC's Good Morning America she was
mistreated after she told the crew on a
September 26 flight to Los Angeles she
was allergic to dogs in the cabin.
She said the crew initially agreed she
could sit far away from the dogs, but
later told her they were concerned about
her being on the plane altogether.
Southwest Airlines said Professor
Daulatzai told flight attendants the
allergy was life-threatening and asked
for the dogs to be removed from the
plane.
She could not provide medical
certification of her condition and was
subsequently asked to deplane at which
time the police were forced to
intervene, the airline said.
But Professor Daulatzai insisted she
repeatedly and calmly explained her
allergy was not life-threatening and was
content once she was positioned in a
seat towards the rear of the plane.
"I said, 'It's not life-threatening at
all'," she told ABC America.
"They just didn't trust me."
Professor Daulatzai said she believed
she was discriminated against because
she was "a brown woman with a hoodie".
She also revealed on the program she was
two months' pregnant.
In a statement, Professor Daulatzai's
lawyers said she was, "profiled,
interrogated, detained, and subjected to
false reporting and the trauma of
racist, vitriolic public shaming
precisely because she is a woman, a
person of colour, and a Muslim".
"Despite trying to convince the crew
that she would be completely fine on the
plane, she was asked by another
Southwest representative to leave the
plane," the statement read.
"Shortly thereafter [officers] pulled
her from her seat by her belt loop,
dragged her through the aisle, exposed
with torn pants, and humiliated her for
the world to see in a now-viral video.
"The Maryland Transportation Authority
Police [MDTA] later disparaged her,
accused her of lying about her
pregnancy, and made racist remarks about
immigrants."
Professor Daulatzai said since the
incident she had received hate mail,
"including racist messages and threats
of further violence".
Austrian

Mumbai Butter Chicken
Boneless chicken simmered in butter and rich creamy tomato
sauce
Step 1
500g Boneless chicken cut into pieces approx. 1
inch.
First marinade
1 Tab. lemon juice
1 tablespoon Kashmiri red chili powder
Salt to taste
Apply the marinade to the chicken and
refrigerate for approx. half an hour
Step 2
Second marinade
Yogurt ˝
cup
(Hang the yogurt in a muslin cloth for fifteen
to twenty minutes to remove extra water)
2 teaspoons ginger paste and
2 teaspoons garlic paste
˝ tsp red Kashmiri chili powder
˝ tsp garam masala powder
2 tsp mustard oil
˝ tsp Salt
Combine the above and add to chicken and
refrigerate for a few hours, even overnight.
FOR GRAVY
2 Tab Butter
2 cloves cardamom
2 black peppercorns
a piece cinnamon stick,
1 tsp of ginger paste
1 tsp. garlic paste
˝ cup tomato purée
˝ tsp red chili powder
˝ cup of water
Salt to taste
1 tab. sugar
Ľ
tsp. powdered kasoori methi (powdered fenugreek
leaves)
˝ cup fresh cream
To make the gravy
Heat the butter in a non-stick pan, add the
cardamoms, cloves, peppercorns and cinnamon.
sauté for two minutes, then add the ginger and
garlic pastes and sauté for two minutes.
Add the tomato puree, red chili powder, salt and
half cup of water.
Bring the mixture to a boil, reducing the heat
and simmer for ten minutes. Lastly add the sugar
and powdered kasoori methi and mix in well.
Method to cook chicken
1. Preheat the oven to 200C
2. String the chicken pieces onto skewers and
cook in the preheated oven or a moderately hot
tandoor for ten to twelve minutes or until
almost done.
3. Baste with the butter and cook for another
two minutes. Remove and set aside.
4. Add the cooked tandoori chicken pieces into
the gravy and allow to simmer for five minutes
and lastly add the fresh cream.
Best served hot with Naan and Paratha

Regrets can quickly
turn into a default
setting in the mind
if you are not aware
of your present
moment. Your moment
right now is your
moment to design
your life in a way
that will serve your
purpose. Moments
spent in regret do
not serve your
purpose - they hold
you back and before
you know it, a
vicious cycle of
regrets becomes your
default setting. You
lose sight of your
present moment and
forget to appreciate
the beauty and
serenity of
surrendering to
ALLAH’s plans for
you.
Let us transform
ourselves right this
moment and cultivate
a mindset which
replaces regret with
absolute gratitude..
How To Replace
Regret With
Gratitude
1. Praise ALMIGHTY
ALLAH for all that
HE has already given
you. Write down a
list of everything
you are blessed
with.
2. Now, Praise
ALMIGHTY ALLAH for
all the lessons you
have learnt from
past experiences,
negative and
positive.
3. Replace all
what-if statements
with “Alhumdolillah”.
4. Avoid comparing
your life with
someone else’s. Your
unique abilities and
experiences make you
different from the
rest of the world.
Focus on your
soulful connection
with ALLAH. Increase
your own ibaadah and
good deeds. DOn’t
worry about who is
saying what and who
is doing what. Focus
on your deeds, your
thoughts, your
words.
5. Daily positive
affirmations.
Consciously choose
positive words when
talking about your
situation. The more
you affirm your life
positively, the more
positive outcomes
arise from
situations. Refer to
examples below:
Someone wise once
said, “When you
change the way you
look at things, the
things you look at
change.”

Medical association of
Queensland is an annual

Connected”
at IWAA. We have been very
privileged to start a
program to connect with our
indigenous sisters. The
“I am Connected” project
is aimed at developing
connections and linkages
between Muslim and
Indigenous women through
sharing of native foods,
customs, arts and crafts and

highlighting the
similarities between these
groups, forging friendships
and celebrating women's
interests across all
cultures in a respectful and
caring environment.

construction of the much
needed ‘place of worship for
Muslims’ which will be the
first purpose built Islamic
Centre / Masjid in the whole
Gladstone Region.
Having
already been purchased the
land, ISG hereby appeals to
the broader local and
international Muslim
communities to raise
$1,600,000 for the
construction stage of the
Islamic Centre in Gladstone.
The prophet
Muhammad (pbuh) said,
“Whoever builds a mosque for
Allah, Allah will build for
him likewise in Paradise” [Bukhârî

Shajarah Islamic Kindergarten is
in need of your help! The
Department of Transport who owns
the current premises at 2 Rothon
Drive, Rochedale South, require
the property to create a new
busway through the area. We need
to find a new location a.s.a.p.
Going back to
the beginning…. Shajarah
Islamic Kindergarten was the
inspiration of a new
Muslimah’s concerns that
there was no Islamic Kindy
where she could send her son
to for the most critical
years of his life i.e the
1st five years. (As we are
all aware of the importance
of the foundation phase in
the correct upbringing of
our children). She noticed
this empty Kindergarten
building at No. 2 Rothon
Drive and in October 2012
the first Islamic Kindy in
Brisbane opened it’s doors
to a pressing need in the
community. From such humble
beginnings up till now, we
are pleased to say that
through the Rahmah and mercy
of Allah we have grown to
become an established
institution serving the
needs of the Muslim
community.
In October
2016 we were assessed by the
Office of Early Childhood
Education and Care and
Alhamdullilah we were rated
as “EXCEEDING THE NATIONAL
QUALITY FRAMEWORK”. We meet
all government requirements
for the National governing
body “ACECQA” as well as the
Queensland State Government
Office of Early Childhood
Education and Care.
Our Service
Approval currently includes
:-
- An
Approved Kindergarten
Program for children in
their final year before
school,
- Long Day Care for 3year
olds to school age,
- Before School Care
- After School Care
- Vacation Care for School
Aged Children
- A Montessori Program
across all ages.
We have 24 childcare places
per day. Our Kindergarten is
set in a beautiful garden
setting and it will be sad
to see it go. We even have
parents coming from the
North side and as far as
Gold Coast, braving the
traffic for up to an hour
just to place their child in
our Islamic Kindy!
To date we have approached
various organisations and
individuals and visited
buildings for rental but
unfortunately have not been
successful in securing
premises for our new Kindy.
We beseech anyone who can be
of any assistance in helping
us to find new premises,
renovate if required, and
relocate by the 31st
December 2017 to come
forward and assist us in
continuing this humble but
integral venture for the
future of our children in
this environment we find
ourselves in.
This is an environment where
our children will learn
about Allah and his beloved
Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.,
recite their duas and surahs,
learn about the 5 pillars of
Islam, following the Sunnah,
the values of Ramadaan and
Eid and go to sleep
listening to the beautiful
recitation of the Quran or
Zikr. …….
