BURQAS are confronting and should never be widespread on the streets of Australia, Tony Abbott says.

The Opposition Leader was responding to comments reportedly made by McMahon Liberal candidate Ray King that burqas are a "sign of oppression" and can be linked to criminality.

Mr Abbott described Mr Ray as a decorated police officer and "outstanding" candidate.

He said he understood Mr King's comments to be more about identifying people in policing situations, given their attire.

"I've been asked about the burqa on lots of occasions and whenever I've been asked about the burqa I've said that I find it a very confronting form of attire," he said.

"Frankly it's not the sort of attire that I'd like to see widespread in our streets.

"But this is a free country.

"Everyone's entitled to make their choice and if people want to wear a burqa, it's ultimately their business."

A federal election candidate in western Queensland has accused Muslims of paying Aborigines to convert to Islam.

Speaking to ABC Western Queensland, Rise Up Australia candidate Pam Hecht (pictured left) said the biggest issue facing people in the electorate of Kennedy, which Bob Katter holds by 18.3 per cent, was the conversion of Indigenous people to Islam.

''I don't know whether people are aware, but many of the Aboriginal people in northern Australia are being targeted by Muslims and in some cases are being paid to convert to Islam,'' she said, describing herself and the electorate as ''farmers . . . just ordinary everyday people'', who ''want to be free to go about our business''.

''Our concern with that is, the Muslim belief, that converting the first peoples of the land to Islam means that the land belongs to Allah, and Islam should be the only religion.

''There is an Aboriginal lady who works with the people up in northern Australia and she has spoken directly with the leader of our party, Daniel Nalliah [and told him about the practice].''

Of the 340,393 Australians who identified as Muslims in the 2006 Census, just 1011 were Indigenous. Comparatively, 290,630 Indigenous people identified as Christian.

Academics believe Aborigines came into contact with those who practised the Islamic faith even before they came into contact with Christianity, first through trade links with Indonesia and later through cameleers.

Mr Nalliah, the leader of Rise Up Australia, states in his Catch the Fire Ministries biography, that he first knew ''the Lord had called him'' after an Australian missionary visited his Sri Lankan town in 1976.

He made national headlines in 2002 when anti-Muslim comments he made became the subject of the first case heard under Victoria's newly-created Racial and Religious Tolerance Act. Mediation ended the case five years later.

Ms Hecht, who says she is a ''fifth generation Australian on her mother's side'' in her biography, said the growth of Islam was ''an important issue for the whole of Australia and definitely Kennedy''. She denied the party wanted to restrict religious choice and said the core issue was a matter of law.

''What we don't support is their hijacking of our laws and our system,'' she said.

''It really is many races, but one law and that's Australian law.''

Earlier this month, the One Nation Party dropped their candidate for the seat of Rankin, Stephanie Banister, after a gaffe-filled interview with the 27-year-old aired on Channel Seven, showed Ms Banister mistaking Islam for a country.

Ms Banister said she had been misrepresented.

TONY Abbott is committed to upgrading relations with Israel as part of a suite of new policies on the Middle East that includes banning more terrorist organisations and a harder line on visits to Australia by extremists.

A Coalition government would also step-up opposition to the "boycott, divestment and sanctions" campaign against Israel, withholding taxpayer funds from any organisation that actively backed the movement.

The Australian has learned that the Opposition Leader will this week commit to extending to Israeli citizens an electronic travel authority, which in most cases provides nearly instant visa approval.

The ETA system was introduced by the Howard government for citizens of advanced nations who have no history of illegally overstaying in Australia.

The Labor government recently expanded the list of nations whose citizens are eligible for fast-track visas to 64 but left Israel off the list - a decision critics said was in line with recent moves by the ALP to distance itself from Israel, including at the UN.

It is understood the omission of Israel caused consternation in Jerusalem.

Both the EU and Canada provide visa-free entry to Israelis.

An Abbott government would immediately direct that Israel be added to the list of nations whose citizens can access fast-track electronic visas for short-term visits to Australia.

Under a range of new policies - which are being directed by Mr Abbott with broad support within the opposition - the Coalition would seek to ban the Islamist extremist organisation Hizb Ut-Tahrir and prevent foreign members of the group coming to Australia to promote extremism.

The Coalition will also seek fresh advice from ASIO on the question of banning the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah. Only the militant wings of these groups are currently banned in Australia, while the US, Canada and a number of Western nations have banned the entire organisations.

Coalition policy documents draw attention to the fact that the US and Canada have banned more than twice as many terrorist organisations as Australia has.

The Coalition plans to make it more difficult for "preachers of hate" to visit Australia. It believes the federal government has the power to stop such visits on character grounds and should do so much more frequently.

An Abbott government would also strengthen Australia's opposition to the BDS campaign by committing to a government-wide policy that prevents additional grants of taxpayers' funds to individuals and organisations that actively support the BDS campaign. The moves are widely supported in the Coalition but also reflect Mr Abbott's long-standing personal commitment to supporting Israel.

NYPD spying on Mosques is ‘outrageous’

US: The New York Police Department’s massive spying on mosques in the New York area and secretly earmarking them as terrorism organizations is “outrageous”, a human rights activist tells Press TV.

“It’s outrageous that an institution of spirituality is being targeted this way,” said Massoud Shadjareh, head of the Islamic Human Rights Commission in London.

“This targeting has got not only impacts on the civil liberties of Muslims, but it also gives the green light to those who attack Muslims and see Muslims as terrorists, which leads to hate crimes,” Shadjareh said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

According to interviews and confidential police documents recently obtained by The Associated Press, the NYPD has opened at least a dozen “terrorism enterprise investigations” into mosques since the 9/11 attacks.

Designating an entire mosque as a terrorism enterprise allows police to spy on the imams even without specified evidence of criminal wrongdoing, the AP report said.

The terrorism designation also means that anyone who attends Muslim prayer services is a potential subject of an investigation and surveillance, according to the report.

The AP first revealed in 2011 that the NYPD was spying on Muslims in the city. The new documents show that the department investigated countless innocent New York Muslims and put information about them in secret police files.

Shadjareh said that about 30 percent of Muslims in the US state of California have reported that they have been victims of physical attacks. He blamed US government institutions like the NYPD for such attacks on Muslims.

Making peace is a marathon

UK: The Runnymede Trust has published a new report entitled The New Muslims. The report notes the Census 2011 results on the number of British Muslims and finds the there has been a decrease in Muslim segregation

An example includes the spreading out from the biggest Muslim concentrations (Tower Hamlets, towards neighbouring areas like Barking and Dagenham. Statistics published by the Ministry of Defence in 2012 which show that there are 650 Muslims serving in the UK armed services. Of these 550 are in the British army, constituting 0.5% of the total.

Muslim citizenship in the UK is under threat. Since 2003, 21 British nationals have had their citizenship revoked and all but one or two of these were Muslim. Sixteen of these revocations took place under the current government and at least five individuals affected were British-born, with one man having lived in the UK for almost 50 years.

Q: Dear Kareema, I've just joined the gym and am hoping to tone my muscles rather than lose weight. Is there any exercises or classes you can suggest I do?

A: Definitely try a Pump class and see how you go. It involves weights and would be an awesome challenge if you push yourself. Start with light weights and let the instructor know that you're new to the class. Work on your technique and then build yourself up to higher weights as the weeks go by. It's great for strength and toning and you should notice your body changing shape as you go.

Otherwise head to the weight training section and challenge yourself with the machines. Be sure to rest your muscles in between workouts & always stay hydrated. Body-weight exercises are good too, eg. push-ups, squats, tricep-dips. etc. Happy toning..

Mula Nasruddin and his wife Begumbibi moved to a new house.

The first morning in the new house, while they were eating breakfast, the Begumbibi looked out through the window and said to her husband Mula Nasruddin, “Sweetheart look! Do you see the clothes which are drying out there? They are so dirty. How do people do washing like that? Don’t they know how to wash, or do they use bad quality washing powder? ”

Mula Nasruddin said nothing but just followed with his eyes at where his wife was pointing through the window.

Since then if Begumbibi saw the clothes drying outside the window, she spoke of those dirty clothes.

A month or so later, one morning Begumbibi was surprised by the cleanness of the clothes she saw outside the window.

She spoke to her husband immediately, “Darling look! Our neighbour has learned how to wash clothes. I had my doubts that anyone could teach them how to clean clothes!”.

Mula Nasruddin said to her, “Darling this morning I woke up early and cleaned our windows.
