More than 500 attended last night's (Saturday) AMARAH/Islamic Relief Australia fund raiser at Michael's Oriental Restaurant in aid of the Psychosocial Treatment centres In Gaza, Palestine with 150 on the waiting list unable to secure a ticket for the function.

Through the donations and the auctions, over $100 000 was raised on the night.

Mr Anas Abdalla was the MC for the night, Assoc Prof Halim Rane provided the backdrop into the Palestinian conflict, Mr David Forde encouraged everyone to engage with their parliamentary representatives and call them to account over the crisis; Ms Salam El-Merebi gave a run down of the Rehabilitation Treatment Centre and the work it conducts in Ramallah; Mr Fadlullah Wilmot described the work of the IRA in Gaza and the help they afforded to peoples from all religious groups in the region; with genuine passion and emotion, 20-year old Ameer Omar delivered a poem he composed especially for the occasion (see poem below) and Mr Hussin Goss conducted the very successful auction. An attempt was made to Skype and talk to the coordinator of the Centre in the Palestinian city during the function.

Composition by Ameer Omar (pictured below)

I watched a clip on YouTube, it was called the tears of Gaza.
This girl was crying, talking about how life is so much harder because Israel Is killing all of their mums and fathers.
Israel is using sons and daughters as their shooting targets.
She really wished this world was something she was not apart of.
We need to stand up now, these things should make you shiver.

Why do we stand and watch?
Why do they have to suffer?
It seems like we do things for ourselves, and have no love for others.
it's time to change us.
It's time that we recover.
I promise to falasteens's undercover brother.
They can all run,
but they can never hide.
The justice of God will bring them to the light.

It was very sad.
The video mad me cry.
It showed grateful we should be
Instead of scream and whine.
These people have no homes,
and yet they still survive.
It shows how strong they are,
and their will to strive.
They've been kicked out.
They're going through genocide,
for more than 66 years and their still alive.
May God have mercy on them.
Not just from you and me.
But from the whole world.

The Islamic Society of Toowoomba organised Eid ul Fitr prayers in rented venue at the Toowoomba Indoor Bowling Association Hall in the city area on Monday, 28 July as per the announcement of the Grand Mufti of Australia.

Over one thousand Muslims participated in the Eid prayers which started with Taqbeer at 7:00am.

Traditional sweets were brought by families and the Society provided the plates, cups, spoon etc and juice to celebrate the end of fasting.

The Society distributed Eid gifts to children under 10 years (162 this year) after the Eid prayers.

Social activities by different communities and home visits continued throughout the day.

Sadaqatul Fitr was also collected for distribution among the poor people.

100-250 people attended the Iftaars at the Mosque catered for by families from the local community during the month of Ramadhan

Amongst the largest turnout for an open air Eid prayer in Brisbane (with estimates between 7 and 10 thousand men, women and children) took place at the school grounds on Tuesday organized by the Islamic Council of Queensland together with the Kuraby and Holland Park Mosques.

Nora Amath, Islamic Relief Australia Board of Directors

Last Sunday on 27th July, a very successful fundraiser was held at the Gold Coast Mosque for the Emergency Appeal for Gaza. Organised by the recently established Ayia Foundation and The Islamic Multicultural Association of the Gold Coast (IMACG) in conjunction with Islamic Relief Australia, the event raised over $100,000 for much needed medical supplies, food and other essential items.

In particular, Islamic Relief Australia would like to thank all of the volunteers on the night, especially the organisers Hussin Goss, Shehab Faragallah, Rami Elmohandis, Maher Jordan, Mahmoud Faragallah and Ree Ali.

Islamic Relief Australia would also like to respond to a few questions people have asked us regarding donations. Specifically, a number of people were concerned as to how Islamic Relief Australia was getting the aid into Gaza with the blockade. Communications officer Anna explains:

Daniel to Imam Imraan Husain

Assalamu alaykum Imam Imraan.

I'm not a Muslim, but I am a person of the book living on the south end of the Gold Coast and I work near the proposed mosque at Currumbin. I've been getting all sorts of "stop the mosque" literature in my mailbox and I'm just disgusted and ashamed of the xenophobia and islamaphobia of people in our community.

Muslims deserve the same regard that all of us do including a place to worship and pray in the general community, a place where one feels safe and free to practice one's beliefs. I'm proud to live in a wonderful democratic country where religious freedoms are paramount and ultimately actions like this one against the mosque only create rifts between neighbours that lead to misunderstandings and needless conflicts.

I would like to know if there's anything I can do to assist your community in this endeavour. If there's someone I can write to in support of the mosque or anything like that. Again on behalf of informed, enlightened and respectful people on the Gold Coast I humbly apologize for the horrid behaviour you have seen from some very misinformed and sadly prejudiced people. Hopefully we can all work together to abolish these shameful ideas and somehow find a way to live together in peace and harmony as God most certainly wishes. Best regards and wishing you a meaningful Jumu'ah.

Imam Imraan Husain to Daniel

Dear Daniel

Assalamu Alaykum (Greetings and peace be upon you).

Thank you for your very heartfelt and thoughtful words regarding the development of the proposed mosque in Currumbin, which I hope in time will happen given the growing Muslim community that reside in and visit the Gold Coast.

I hope and pray that in time through discussion and dialogue that the conditions for mutual respect and understanding amongst people from different cultural, religious and non religious backgrounds will occur. And, that in time the concerns regarding the mosque will be replaced with a sense of it being part of a vibrant community in which Muslims can peacefully worship and be part of an open community that causes no disturbance to others living in the area.

Australia truly is a beautiful country. We are a multicultural society in which everyone is free to express their views. In many ways this country and our beautiful City of Gold Coast which we all share epitomise the values that our Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) left all of humanity with in his last sermon. To read his sermon please click here

This robust freedom of expression that we have in Australia is something that is healthy and it should be cherished because it creates the conditions for dialogue. Discussion and dialogue create the necessary opportunities to connect with each other to explore difference, concerns and build bridges. By building bridges with each other which includes engaging with those who are concerned about what a mosque in Currumbin might mean to their community we can in time hopefully break down barriers and misconceptions.

As you maybe aware the Gold Coast already has a mosque here in Arundel; and I have the privilege of leading a wonderful congregation in what is a very inclusive and friendly local community. This has only been achievable by always being open to the community and taking part in wider community engagement activities. This includes our mosque being open to visits from the public, tourists and many local schools on a regular basis. For example, last week I had the pleasure of hosting a visit of students and teachers from Aquinas College where we had lively and engaging discussions about what it means to be a Muslim.

As such, your kinds words are a welcome contribution to enabling these discussions to happen alongside the many community engagement activities that I think are needed to build bridges. And so in this vein, should you or others wish to visit the mosque here in Arundel we would be happy to have you here.

Kind regards

Imraan Husain
Gold Coast Mosque Imam

Dr. Amina Wadud (USA, 1952-Present)

In 2005, Amina was the first female imam to lead a mixed-congregation prayer. This act caused a shock wave to run throughout the Islamic world.

Some viewed it as an awakening and a return to the equalitarian way of Islam. Others viewed it as an offensive innovation.

According to Amina, "The radical notion that women are full human beings is already inscribed in Islam by our notion of tawhid.

So the binary that tries to give women less than full human dignity is transformed into a relationship of equality and reciprocity."

Despite individuals' views on the subject, she has created a platform where diverse Muslim views can be voiced.

Turkish Women Protest Against Politician Who Said They Shouldn't Laugh In Public

TURKEY: A speech made by the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister urging women not to laugh in public in order to "preserve morality" has sparked a backlash on social media from women posting defiant selfies of themselves laughing at his remarks.

On Wednesday, Bülent Arınç (pictured left) was unrepentant over his speech and instead turned his attention to women who holiday without their husbands and "can't wait to climb poles when they see one".

The backlash began on Monday after Mr Arınç condemned the perceived moral corruption enveloping Turkey and called for women to be chaste by not laughing in public.

"[The woman] will know what is haram and not haram. She will not laugh in public. She will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chastity" he said during his speech on morality.

Thousands of women across Turkey wasted no time in ridiculing the Deputy PM's remarks by posting pictures of themselves laughing. Their photos were accompanied by the hashtags #kahkaha (laugh) and #direnkahkaha (resist, laugh).

BBC Trending estimates over 300,000 comments and pictures were posted with the hashtags, yet Mr Arınç insists his comments formed part of "useful speech", according to the Hurriyet Daily News.

"Some people criticise me by picking up only a part of an one and a half hour speech. What a baseless and disgusting claim. People who have listened to all of my comments have realised this," he was quoted as saying.

"If I had only said women should not laugh then I have done something irrational. But my speech was about manners and moral rules.

“There are some artists who now laugh artificially and send me their photos. Real laughs relieve a person, but these are artificial ones. Those who go for a vacation without their husbands and can’t wait to climb poles when they see one.”

Melda Onur, a lawmaker from the main opposition party CHP, said on Twitter that Arinc's comments portrayed laughing as a dishonourable act and left women exposed to violence.

‘Moscow needs more mosques!’ – Muftis

Muslims on a street near the Cathedral Mosque before a prayer on Uraza Bayram (Eid)

RUSSIA: A senior spokesperson for Russia’s Council of Muftis has urged Moscow authorities to build more mosques in the city, saying this would prevent the overcrowding of city streets on major holidays.

Believers deserve more mosques in Moscow. We are suggesting ten mosques for the whole of Moscow, one for each administrative district. It would be easier, and no one would have to stop the traffic if the mosques were evenly distributed throughout the city,” Gulnur Gaziyeva was quoted as saying by RSN radio on Monday.

The suggestion was made on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday of breaking the fast, which is known as Uraza Bairam in Russia. As in previous years the celebrations attract thousands of people to the two mosques in central Moscow, prompting the authorities to close several major streets to traffic, and putting an additional load on public transport.\

Muslim officials raise the issue of new mosques several times every year as the economic boom has drawn thousands of migrant workers from predominantly Muslim Central Asian states to the Russian capital.

However, in November last year Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin rejected the idea in a press interview saying that the majority of mosque-goers were not permanent residents of the city, but migrants who should go home once their working contracts expire.

The Mayor said the existing three mosques could very well serve the needs of the permanent residents of Moscow who follow the Muslim faith.

In 2012 the Echo of Moscow radio quoted Sobyanin as saying that no new mosques will be built in the city under his rule.

According to official statistics from Moscow City Hall the number of labour migrants in the city is close to 2 million but there is no breakdown by religion.

Britain First founder Jim Dowson quits over mosque invasions and 'racists and extremists'

UK: The founder of Britain First has resigned from the far-right group over its “provocative and counterproductive” mosque invasions.

James “Jim” Dowson (pictured left), a former British National Party (BNP) member and anti-abortion campaigner, announced his departure on Sunday.

While Britain First blamed “media pressure” and family issues for the decision and said he would be missed “enormously” in a saccharine post, Mr Dowson publicly shamed the group’s tactics as “unacceptable and unchristian”.

The 49-year-old told the Mirror: “Most of the Muslims in this country are fine.

“They are worried about extremists the same as us. So going into their mosques and stirring them up and provoking them is political madness and a bit rude.”

Britain First posts triumphant videos of the so-called “invasions” on its website and Facebook page, where its paramilitary-style arm is seen confronting imams and worshippers.

The group also organises “Christian patrols” in ethnically diverse areas and has been known to hand out Bibles to Muslims.

In an incident in Crayford, south London, in July, members of the “Defence Force” demanded the removal of “sexist” entrance signs for men and women at a mosque.

The group ignored requests to take off their shoes in a place of worship, saying “when you respect women we’ll respect your mosques”.

The invasions are run by another Britain First leader, Paul Golding, who came in from criticism from his former ally.

Mr Dowson told the Mirror: “No matter how many times I told him [Golding] I did not want decent Muslims intimidated, he just continued doing it.

“I have come to the conclusion that no matter how hard I tried, you cannot escape from the fact that the group is being overrun with racists and extremists.

"I think he is fooling himself and lots of people that Britain First is a Christian group. Sadly, it has just become a violent front for people abusing the Bible.”

KB says: I came up with this recipe when I wanted to bake a simple yet tasty appetiser for my family. The filling can be varied to your liking. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Chicken in Scones

2 cups flour
125g butter (grated)
¾ cup of cheese
1 tab chopped spring onion
1 tsp. salt
1 ½ tsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp. black pepper
¾ (approx) cup buttermilk
½ tsp. bicarb of soda

1. Sift dry ingredients; gently rub in the butter to resemble bread crumbs.

2. Add the remaining dry ingredients mixing it lightly.

3. Add the buttermilk a little at a time to form a soft scone like dough, you may need to adjust the quantity of the buttermilk.

4. Roll out the dough to a 1cm thickness, cut into rings and place onto a baking tray lined with baking paper.

5. Bake in a pre-heated oven of 180 degrees.

When cool, slice the scone, and spread it with your favourite chicken or steak filling. Top the filling with a sauce and some cheese.

Do you have a recipe to share with CCN readers?
