The
Courier Mail’s Queensland
Schools Guide has tallied
five years of results for
school-leavers, with the
data revealing Independent
schools have consistently
produced the highest
percentage of OP 1-15
students (click on image
on left). The ranking
are revealed in comparisons
taken from The Courier
Mail’s Queensland Schools
Guide website database
comprising data from 448
State and Independent
schools in Queensland.
The all-boys’
Brisbane Grammar Schools was
top among schools with more
than 30 OP eligible
students, with 94.2 per cent
of its OP-eligible Year 12s
receiving an OP 1-15 on
average between 2007 and
2011.
The Islamic
College of Brisbane stands
11 with 89.8 per cent of its
students consistently
achieving OP 1-15 on average
between 2007 and 2011. It is
noteworthy to mention that
during the years 2006-2008,
100 per cent of its students
achieved OP 1-15.
Contrary to
the claim that elite schools
that have achieved the top
ranking are the state’s most
expensive schools with
annual fee ranging from
$20,000 per student, the
Islamic College of Brisbane
has a moderate fee structure
with Year 11 & 12 paying an
annual fee of $2300.
The Board of
Management of the Islamic
College of Brisbane led by
Mr Mohammed Yusuf
congratulated the Principal
and his team of dedicated
teaching and support staff
on this achievement.
The Islamic
College of Brisbane
principal Dr Mubarak Noor
attributed the achievement
to excellence in teaching by
the academic staff and the
strong academic culture
prevalent at the college.
AUSTRALIA'S
biggest Islamic school has
been ordered to pay back $9
million in public funds to
the NSW government after it
found millions in taxpayers'
money had been diverted to
the country's peak Muslim
body.
Malek Fahd, which has more
than 2000 students at its
Greenacre campus in Sydney's
southwest, receives almost
75 per cent of its funds
from state and commonwealth
governments.
Following an audit ordered
by the federal government
after reports in The
Australian raised concerns
about the school's financial
relationship with the
Australian Federation of
Islamic Councils, Malek Fahd
has been told to repay
funding given to the school
by NSW since 2010 and
remains ineligible for state
government funds.
NSW Education Minister
Adrian Piccoli has also
asked NSW police and the
Australian Securities and
Investments Commission to
review the school's
financial dealings to
investigate possible action
against those on the boards
of the school and AFIC.
The Australian
In response to this report the principal of Malek Fahd
school, Dr Intaj Ali, said that he disagreed with the
finding that the School was operating for profit within
the meaning of s21A of the NSW Education Act 1990 and
intended to challenge this decision.
"The School
will take the appropriate
steps to have this decision
reviewed and is confident
that ultimately the correct
outcome will be achieved.
Malek Fahd wishes to
reassure all parents,
students, staff and the
wider
community that its focus
remains on the delivery of
quality education for our
students and it will
continue to work with both
the NSW and the Federal
Education Departments."

Reports of
the clashes taking place in
Arakan (Myanmar/Burma) have
spurred a number of local
charity organizations and
groups to raise funds for
the more than 90,000 ethnic
Rohingya Muslims who have
been displaced in the
conflict.
Amongst the
organizations calling for
donations are the
Al-Imdaad Foundation,
Muslim Aid Australia, Human
Appeal International and
Muslims Australia (AFIC).
A
spokesperson for Muslim Aid
Australia said that they
were currently monitoring
the Rohingya and Rakhine
conflict in Myanmar with
great concern. "While
there is clearly a great and
urgent need for external
assistance, at present
Muslim Aid Australia is
looking for registration to
allow us to work in Myanmar.
As the situation develops,
Muslim Aid Australia’s
programme department is
pursuing all opportunities
to help those affected in
Myanmar. We are also
actively exploring other
options; the programme
department is in close
contact with local NGOs and
INGOs who are active in
Myanmar. Please stay tuned
as we are very close to
executing an appeal,
InshaAllah."
The Burmese
Rohingya Community in
Australia recently
issued a statement on
the situation currently
facing their people back
home.
The Hon Shaoquett Moselmane
MLC Member of Legislative
Council Parliament of New
South Wales has initiated
the inaugural Multicultural
Media Awards.
"Multicultural community
media outlets and their
journalists have never been
properly recognised," Mr.
Moselmane said.
"Since the first
multicultural newspaper in
Australia, Die Deutsche
Post, was published in
Adelaide in 1848 there has
never been a stand-alone
award recognising
mutlicultural community
media. This year, I am proud
to be inaugurating such an
awards initiative, with the
hope that it becomes an
annual event."
"I
encourage all multicultural
media outlets to join in
this event – both to further
multiculturalism, but also
to recognise the
contribution of our
community journalists."
Bntries

An
agreement for the payment of
a dowry under Islamic law
after the separation of a
Sydney couple should be
enforced, the Supreme Court
has ruled this week.
The couple, Neima and
Mostafa Mohamed, had married
under Islamic law in April
2004. Eleven months later
they signed a financial
agreement under which Mr
Mohamed would pay his wife
$50,000 if he initiated a
separation or divorce.
His barrister, Jonathan
Cohen, had argued the
agreement was against public
policy because it
effectively kept him in
servitude, by compelling him
to remain in the marriage.
The case was an appeal
against an earlier decision
in the Local Court and Mr
Cohen argued the magistrate
had made legal and factual
mistakes including in
deciding when and how the
couple separated.
But Associate
Justice Joanne Harrison
ruled against Mr Mohamed,
finding the agreement was
enforceable under Australian
law. She ordered that he pay
not only the $50,000 dowry,
but also his former wife's
legal costs.
Mrs Mohamed said the couple
had separated in April 2007
after an argument, when Mr
Mohamed had sent a daughter
from an earlier marriage
around to their home with a
list, asking her to collect
his belongings.
......... a
payment
designed to
provide for
a wife when
she is no
longer
required
under Sharia
law to be
financially
maintained
by her
husband, and
as such as
been an
important
safety net
in Muslim
societies
Associate
Justice
Harrison
However, the
situation was complicated
when the parties tried to
reconcile later. Mrs Mohamed
told the court her husband "Islamically
divorced her" in September
2008 after another argument.
Dowries are commonly used in
Islamic marriages in
Australia and the contract
enables a partner to enforce
the dowry contract under
civil law in the local
court, rather than having to
battle the expensive and
lengthy processes of the
family court.
Mr Mohamed's
solicitor, Gordon Elliot,
said NSW was a secular state
and they believed the courts
should not be swayed by
Islamic law.
Associate Justice Harrison
found that other common law
countries had not
interpreted similar
agreements according to
Sharia, but had applied
common law to the
relationship between the
parties.
"The authorities do not
suggest that making a
contract such as the
agreement in this case would
be against public policy,"
she said.
She explained this type of
dowry was "a payment
designed to provide for a
wife when she is no longer
required under Sharia law to
be financially maintained by
her husband, and as such as
been an important safety net
in Muslim societies".

SPAIN: BBC Radio 4 recently broadcast the
first in a two part series on Spain’s
relationship with Islam and its Muslims,
presented by journalist and former
politician, Michael Portillo.
Portillo explores the situation of Muslims
living in a country which for almost 800
years enjoyed an Islamic empire in the south
and centre of the country. It was a period
of rich cultural and scientific learning,
with a strong tradition of ‘convivencia’, or
coexistence between the three main Abrahamic
religions.
Portillo begins in the city of Badalona
located in eastern Catalonia, where he
encounters Muslims praying in the open air
on a sports court. His discussions with
local Muslims reveal the struggles which
they face in holding congregational prayers.
Badalona’s Muslims do not have a mosque and
it took four years to get a license to pray
on the sports ground. They argue that the
funds are there, but finding land and
getting permission to build is the biggest
obstacle. Moreover in Badelona specifically,
the city’s Mayor holds what are considered
extreme policies on engagement with the
Muslim community. He believes that most
Muslims interpret Islam is in a ‘restricted’
way that is contrary to Spanish values.

South
Africa: The Halal Kingdom
SOUTH
AFRICA: With the halal industry reaching
over $2 trillion in value, South Africa has
emerged as a surprising global leader in
halal certification, writes Peter
Shaw-Smith.
Although it holds the world’s
smallest percentage of Muslims, there are
grounds for asserting that South Africa has
a highly advanced halal certification
programme. The Rainbow Nation is considered
one of the five largest producers of halal
products worldwide.
And because it comprises 25 per cent of the
African continent’s gross domestic product
(GDP), significant opportunities exist for
halal trade.
A great deal
of work done
in South
Africa over
the decades
is now
paying off.
Halal is
becoming a
holistic
concept.
The story of this development
is intricately entwined with South Africa’s
unique and painful history, as the fight
against apartheid gained momentum in the
second half of the last century.
Halal certification was introduced in the
1960s, under the supervision of the Ulama
(religious leader of the Muslim community),
but was limited to meat slaughterhouses and
abattoirs. In the 1970s, oversight was
extended to poultry, and in the 1980s to
other consumables. In 1996, the South
African National Halal Authority (SANHA)
established itself as the pre-eminent halal
certification body.
This is despite the fact that South Africa’s
Muslim community is not large. For instance,
Pretoria, one of the country’s three capital
cities, is home to a population of around 50
million, of which 79 per cent are Christian,
two per cent Muslim, 0.1 per cent Jewish,
1.2 per cent Hindu, 3.7 per cent other
beliefs, and 14 per cent with no religious
affiliation. The Muslim population is
estimated to be 1.2 million officially, and
over two million unofficially.
LONDON: Officials have reached an agreement
to allow a female judo athlete from Saudi
Arabia compete at the London Olympics
wearing some form of headscarf.
The International Olympic Committee says
Wojdan Shaherkani can wear a hijab when
competing Friday in the women's heavyweight
division.
The International Judo Federation had said a
headscarf could be dangerous because the
sport include chokeholds and aggressive
grabbing techniques.
Saudi Arabia sent two female athletes to
London on condition they adhere to the
Muslim country's strict dress code.
Taking
part for Muslim women really does mean more
than winning at Olympics
LONDON: FOR most athletes at
the London Olympics, their battle starts
when they take their place on the starting
blocks.
But for Wojdan Shaherkani and Tahmina
Kohistani (pictured above), just
taking part in London felt like a gold medal
victory.
To reach the Games, they have had to
overcome political, social, religious and
sporting obstacles.
Judoka Shaherkani's Olympics lasted just
over a minute this morning, but the fact she
made it to her bout with Puerto Rico's
Melissa Mojica meant it was a revolutionary
moment for the women of Saudi Arabia.
The country's ultra-conservative clergy
tried to destroy her ambitions to be Saudi's
first female Olympian, before an argument
about the type of headscarf she should wear
jeopardised her place at the 11th hour.
And though Afghanistan's Kohistani trailed
in last in the 100m - in a time of 14.42sec
- the warm appreciation of the London crowd
who recognised her historic feat must have
been the greatest of feelings
EU: Many Olympians have
overcome adversity to compete at London
2012, but perhaps none are competing quite
like Malaysian air rifle shooter Nur Suryani
Mohamed Taibi.
The athlete is competing in the ten metre
category eight-months pregnant, and shot
whilst her baby was kicking.
Suri, as she is known to her friends, found
out she was pregnant just two days before
being selected for the Games, and her
pregnancy has developed along with her
training.
However, she said that with a little
coaxing, her child stayed mostly quiet
during the competition, telling reporters:
"I just say to her, Mummy has to shoot for a
few hours."
Although her husband gave her his blessing
to compete, her family have been worried
about Suri giving birth in Britain. She
dismissed them though, simply saying that
God had a plan for her and what would be
would be.
The 47th ranked shooter failed to make the
medals, coming in 34th in the heats.
However, she certainly had one of the more
memorable Games.

Q: Dear Kareema, how can I boost my metabolism to aid
weight loss?
A: Start by not skipping any meals, especially
breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day and
tends to be the most rushed part of our day. By skipping
breakfast, you’re hitting the snooze button on your
metabolism instead of kick starting it.
Also
try having smaller meals more often – going without food for
long periods of time will also slow your metabolism.
Exercise of course – any activity that gets your heart rate
up will raise your metabolism not only during, but for
several hours after you finish your workout.
Adding some strength training to your workout will also help
you gain more energy-burning lean muscle which in turn
boosts metabolism.
