Representatives
of the Burmese Rohingya
Muslims met with the
leadership of the Islamic
Council of Queensland (ICQ)
on Sunday 12 August to seek
assistance on ways in which
it could, as a group, bring
attention to the plight of
the Rohingya Muslims being
persecuted in Burma.
According to
the representatives the
fundamentals appear to be
that three criminal elements
within the Rohingya
community set upon a
Buddhist woman, raped and
killed her. This started
reprisals from the Buddhists
who torched the homes of
innocent Rohingya Muslims.
Being frustrated at being
made the scapegoat for
unilateral punishment for
the deeds of some criminal
elements within its
community, some Rohingya
peoples decided to take
revenge attacks on the
Buddhists residents.
Obviously this led to an
escalation of the turn of
events and many more
innocent Muslims got killed.
The Burmese Government
considers the Rohingya a
stateless people and the
Rohingyas' claims to being
indigenous to the land is
vigorously denied by the
authorities. The Burmese
government refuses to
recognize the country's
estimated 800,000 Rohingya
Muslims as an ethnic group
and denies them citizenship.
Many Burmese consider the
Rohingya to be illegal
immigrants from Bangladesh.
This means that most
Rohingya do not have access
to education, citizenry,
justice, and equal economic
opportunities afforded to
the Burmese citizens.
Furthermore, the Rohingya
are systematically
persecuted in order to
reduce their numbers and to
drive them from their homes.
Rohingya
Muslims in Brisbane are
extremely anxious about the
killings in their home
country and wish to make the
plight of their people known
to the wider Australia
community.
In this
regard, ICQ is holding a
meeting on Monday August
27, at 6.30pm at the Islamic
College of Brisbane, to
discuss ways in which the
plight of the Rohingya
situation can be addressed.
Members of the public are
invited to attend and join
in these discussions.
Brisbane human
rights advocacy

The

was supplied by

There are 1.6
billion Muslims in the
world, many of whom grapple
with the role religion
should play in their lives,
and the lives of their
children. Each year during
Ramadan, more than a hundred
of the best young students
from more than 70 countries
across the Islamic world
converge on Cairo for
Egyptʼs International Holy
Koran Competition, one of
the Islamic world's most
prestigious contests. Some
of the competitors are as
young as seven, and several
have memorized the entire
600-page Koran without
actually speaking Arabic.
As an
International Baccalaureate
Diploma Program student, I
was required to complete a
project integrating
creativity, action and
community service.
My
passion for singing and
graphic design lead me to
what was said to be an
“impossible task”: to record
and design a CD in a foreign
language in support of the
Islamic Society of Algester.
Around 5,880 beads later (a
handful of which are seen on
the cover), my love of
playing with pliers found me
shaping over 1000 pieces of
jewellery in order to fund
the production of this CD.
Although these unique
far-fetched innovations of a
sixteen year old perplexed
many, I have been able to
give back in my own special
way to the building fund of
a wonderful association that
I hold close to my heart.
I have
watched the Islamic Society
of Algester grow
substantially in the last 10
years.
As a result, the
current premises, an old,
two-storey house, used as a
Mosque and community centre,
can no longer meet the needs
of the growing community.
On
occasion, Salaat (daily
prayer) has to be recited
outdoors as there simply is
not enough space.
I share a
burning desire to see the
building and completion of a
new Mosque, like the
dedicated members of this
community, respected elders
and youth alike.
Their
admirable efforts have
inspired me to complete this
mammoth task. Without their
support and enthusiasm, I
would not have dared to
dream.
My hope is
that this CD will not only
help our community towards
our dream of a new Mosque
but also increase the love
in our hearts for our
beloved Prophetﷺ.
May Allah accept all our
efforts.
The CD features
Qiraat by
Mohammed
Zeeshaan Ashrafi,
is 53 minutes in
length and
includes a 16
page booklet of
transliterations
of lyrics and
English
translations.

The very
popular Michael's Oriental
Restaurant, which has
catered for a number of
Muslim community functions
over the past many years
often under the watchful eye
of the function organizers,
has now been certified by
the Islamic Council of
Queensland (ICQ).
CCN caught up
with its owner, the dashing
and ever-obliging Michael
Nee, for an interview not
only to find out about the
man who has rubbed shoulders
with political and community
leaders of all persuasions
in the course of making
Michael's Oriental a
household name in south-east
Queensland but also to tell
us what he has up his
sleeves for the restaurant.
[CCN]
Thank you Michael for taking
some time out from your busy
schedule to talk to us.
Let's start off with a
little background about
yourself and when it all
began for you.
[Michael
Nee] I started off with
a successful international
career in fashion and
textiles, working on quality
lifestyle brands including
Quiksilver, Roxy, Arena
Swimwear and Canterbury. I
had decided then that it was
time to follow my true dream
which was to own and run a
restaurant that embraces my
love of quality food and the
pride of my Malaysian
heritage.
[CCN]
Tell us about the early days
of Michael's Oriental.
[Michael
Nee] On my 31st birthday
in 1989 (and with some help
from my cousin - a top
Malaysian chef), I proudly
celebrated the launch of
Michael’s Oriental. This was
a brave move, considering my
only experience in catering
was as a waiter at a Chinese
restaurant in England. The
original Michael’s Oriental
was located at Sunnybank
Plaza Shopping Centre with
120 seats. Soon after it
opened, the restaurant
quickly developed a
reputation for excellence.
After 11
years and continued success,
Michael’s Oriental outgrew
its Sunnybank site and so I
decided that it was time to
expand my business and
relocate to a larger
location. On the 20th June
1998, the new Michael’s
Oriental Restaurant &
Function Centre at Eight
Mile Plains was launched
with a big bang – playing
host on its opening night to
a Vietnamese Wedding
Reception of 400 guests. The
new building was purpose
built, according to my
specific designs for a venue
with the ability to operate
as a quality restaurant and
also cater for different
size functions. With this
substantially larger, modern
and more flexible setting,
Michael’s Oriental can now
host functions for 40- 400+
guests.
[CCN]
Over the years, Michael's
Oriental has received many
prestigious awards. Please
tell us about some of them.
[Michael
Nee] It's a long list
but the one I am the
proudest of is the coveted
Australian Golden Plate
Award which Governor
General of Australia
presented to me. More
recently we were awarded the
Australian Federation Salon
Culinaire 2011 Brisbane
“Modern Asian Challenge",
The Courier Mail Restaurant
& Catering QLD Industry
Awards for "Best Family
Restaurant in Brisbane",
"Best Asian Restaurant" &
"People's Choice Best
Restaurant in Brisbane" and
"Quest Business Achievers
Awards". In addition,
Michael's Oriental
Restaurant and Function
Centre was inducted in Quest
Business Achievers "Hall of
Fame Award" which endorsed
our commitment to providing
high quality cuisine and
service.
[CCN]
Wow! That's quite an
impressive list. Michael,
what does Michael’s Oriental
mean to you?
[Michael
Nee] I am very proud of
my achievements over the
past 23 years in this
industry and I still have
great passion for it.
Through Michael’s Oriental I
had the opportunity to meet
so many great people from
all walks of life including
3 Prime Ministers, 4
Queensland Premiers, many
politicians, talented sport
stars, famous singers and
movie stars.
[CCN]
What is your ultimate dream
for Michael’s Oriental?
[Michael
Nee] To become the best
restaurant and function
centre in Brisbane's South.
[CCN]
What do you feel is the most
important thing in
hospitality?
[Michael
Nee] Customer Service:
Look after your customers,
if you don’t someone else
will. It doesn’t matter how
many years we have been in
business, “we are only as
good as the last meal”.
Attention to detail and
little personal touches goes
a long way.
[CCN]
What is the inspiration
behind the menu at Michael's
Oriental?
[Michael
Nee] Our dishes are
inspired by the full bodied
flavours of South East Asia,
especially Malaysian
cuisine. Malaysia is a
country with an impressive
variety of authentic food
from many different cultures
– Malay, Chinese, Indian,
Melaka, Portuguese and Thai.
Each culture offers
distinctive flavours,
special ingredients and
unique cooking styles.
[CCN]
What is your favourite dish
of all time?
[Michael
Nee] Nothing beats a
good old spicy curry – the
spicier the better.
[CCN]
What does getting the halal
certification mean to you
and Michael's Oriental?
[Michael
Nee] I have always
appreciated the support of
the Muslim community of
Queensland and your readers
are aware of the many
fantastic events we have
hosted here - everything
from Muslim weddings, fund
raisers and ifthaars to
business meetings and
lectures. Coming from
Malaysia I am very sensitive
to the needs of the Muslim
community and have always
ensured that they have not
been compromised in any way.
The halal certification will
give my Muslim customers
just that bit of peace of
mind that our facilities are
being monitored externally
in accordance with the
required standards.
[CCN]
What is your next big event
that you are looking forward
to hosting?
[Michael
Nee] I know the retiring
Police Commissioner, Bob
Atkinson very well. He has
been a guest at the
restaurant for a number of
important functions. To have
him say farewell to the
Muslim community on 5
October is going to be
something special.
[CCN]
Thanks Michael for talking
to us. We wish you all the
best and look forward to
seeing you on the 5th,
insha'Allah.
[Michael
Nee] I want to take this
opportunity to wish all your
CCN readers and their
families SELAMAT HARI RAYA
and encourage them to try
out our
new silver banquet menu
or
a la carte menu that
they can enjoy with family
and friends.
On Sunday,
12th August (23rd/24th
Ramadan), Muhammad Hassim,
ran the 14km Sydney
City2Surf to raise much
needed funds to feed
countless lives around the
world.
Asked about
how it went for him Muhammed
told CCN:
With
the mercy of Allah, and
the support and
motivation from all the
brothers and sisters, I
finished the City2surf
in 1 hour and 23
minutes, with my fast
intact. Alhamdullillah
the weather was great
and indeed a blessing
from Allah!
Alhamdulillah with the
support of our community
we have managed toraise over $12,500
for food projects
around. This achievement
also places me in the
top 10 of individual
fundraisers for the
City2Surf, however there
is still an opportunity
to make further
contributions and the
funds will be put to
good use for the sake of
Allah.
Thank you for your
support, may Allah
reward you all.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Hamburg has become
Germany's first city to recognize Islamic
holidays, a move meant to encourage the
integration of a religious minority often
vilified by opponents of immigration.
Muslim employees and students will be
allowed days off to celebrate their holidays
and Islamic classes will be allowed in state
schools, authorities and Islamic groups said
after negotiations lasting five years.
"We hope that the introduction of Muslim
religious classes in the northern city-state
will be a signal for the other fifteen
German states," said Daniel Abdin from
Hamburg's council of Islamic communities.
"This agreement is an important step towards
a recognition of Islam in the country."
The agreement will come into force next
year, the first of this kind in a country
home to some 4 million Muslims, about half
of whom have German citizenship.
The total population is around 82 million in
Germany where religious and ethnic tolerance
is a sensitive issue.
Federal conservative lawmaker Volker Kauder,
a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel,
said earlier this year that Islam was not
part of Germany's tradition and identity.
A court in Cologne banned circumcision on
young boys in July, sparking criticisms from
the Muslim and Jewish communities.
Muslim groups in Hamburg, representing some
150,0000 Muslims, said the agreement was a
historic sign of acceptance.
"Muslims consider Hamburg their home," said
Zekeriya Altug, from Hamburg's
Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for
Religion.

KB says: This recipe comes close to
the Romany Creams by Bakers of which I enjoyed eating in
South Africa – the chocolate filling however raises the bar.
This recipe is mostly the creation of a close friend of mine
who prefers to remain anonymous.
Romany Creams
Ingredients
250g butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 cups coconut
¼ cup cocoa diluted in water
2½ cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
Vanilla Essence
Method
1. Cream butter and sugar until light add eggs
one at a time then add the vanilla essence.
2. Gradually fold in the cocoa, coconut and the
rest of the ingredients.
3. Form into small rounds, flatten, place on a
greased tray and run the fork over the round to
create patterns.
4. Bake on 180degrees for 10mins or baked.
5. Cool and sandwich together with melted
chocolate and cream (see recipe below)
Chocolate Filling
Melt 200g milk chocolate, in the microwave for
