Brisbane Eid celebrations

Islamic College of Brisbane, Karawatha

1.6 billion Muslims around the world celebrated the end of the Ramadan on Sunday after a month of fasting from dawn to dusk as did the Brisbane Muslim community who started the day of festivities, known as Eid-ul-Fitr, with large prayer gatherings at various centres.

The Islamic College in Karawatha held the largest congregation of men, women and children with almost 6000 worshippers taking up every available space in and around the school hall.

It was also a day to meet and greet family members and friends and share meals and exchange gifts.

Australian International Islamic College, Durack

More than 2000 people attended the half day Eid Ul Fitr festivities at the Australian International Islamic College.

Three of the College's Imams were joined by the Imam of Darul Uloom to conduct the prayer program.

There was food aplenty as after prayers, the festive crowd were treated to a hot breakfast before the children rushed to enjoy the many rides that the AIIC had offered as a "free gift" to the community.

In his address, AIIC CEO, Br. Keysar Trad thanked the Brisbane and Gold Coast Muslim communities for their ongoing support of the AIIC and prayed for unity and more certainty for our community so that in the future, we can all celebrate our Eid together.

The revellers were later treated to Lebanese sweets specially shipped to the AIIC from Sydney.

A dinner was held at the Landmark Chinese Restaurant on 23 August with special guest the Hon Senator Bob Carr, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs hosted by Mr Graham Perrett MP, Federal Member for Moreton.

The occasion also presented itself with two other opportunities:-

One for the Muslim Charitable Foundation (MCF) to present a cheque of $22, 000 to the Burmese Rohingya Association in Queensland to be forwarded to Burma to help the Rohingyan community - the money was donated by the attendees of  Kuraby Mosque and the end-of-Eid prayers at the Islamic College of Brisbane at Karawatha.

The other was for the local Rohingyan delegation from the Burmese Rohingya Association of Queensland Australia represented by Mr Hossain Juhar and Mr Sawyed Amin (president and vice president, respectively) to hand the Foreign Minister a detailed letter describing the plight of their countrymen in Burma and urging Australian intervention and support for their community.

(left to right) Mr. Hashim Hatia, Mr. Mohammed Paruk, Mr. Kemal Omar, Mr. Farouk Adam, Mr. Sawyed Amin, Senator Bob Carr, Mr. Hossain Juhar, Dr Mustafa Ally, Mr. David Forde, Mr Lewis Lee and Mr Graham Perrett MP.

 Press release

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King this week launched a video resource to support Australians of Muslim faith in their decision-making and family discussions about organ and tissue donation.

Ms King said the video, Reaching Out, highlights the life-transforming benefits of organ and tissue donation in a way that has resonance and relevance for people of Muslim faith.

“Providing information on organ and tissue donation in a way that has relevance to culturally and linguistically diverse communities is a priority for the Australian Government,” Ms King said.

“I am confident that Reaching Out will encourage Australians of Muslim faith to discover more about organ and tissue donation, make informed donation decisions and, most importantly, discuss their wishes with family members.”

Reaching Out has been produced by the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Council of Australia (FECCA) in consultation with representatives from Muslim communities in Australia.

It provides different perspectives from people within the Australian Muslim community on organ and tissue donation. It features a doctor, transplant recipients and their families and an expert providing interpretations of Islamic Law.

Commenting on FECCA’s role in developing the resource, the organisation’s Chair, Pino Migliorino, noted, “FECCA is proud to have been involved with this initiative, aimed at promoting organ and tissue donation in Muslim communities.

As the peak national body representing Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, FECCA fully endorses the video and encourages all Australians to consider having discussions with their family and friends about organ donation.”

Ms King said that new research commissioned by the Organ and Tissue Authority highlighted the need to improve access to information about organ and tissue donation for Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

“Just 39 per cent of Australians from non-English speaking backgrounds have discussed their donation wishes with family members over the past 12 months, compared with 60 per cent of those from English speaking backgrounds,” Ms King said.

Australians from non-English speaking backgrounds are also less likely to know the donation wishes of family members at just 39%, compared with 56% of all Australian families.

Reaching Out was funded as part of the Organ and Tissue Authority’s Community Awareness Grants Program. It is one of 23 projects focused on addressing barriers to decision making and family discussion within culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The following video includes the views of some familiar Brisbane faces:

Gladstone is a small regional town 700km north of Brisbane.

During the past 5 years the Muslim community has grown from about 8-12 to about 70 Muslims.

Recently an Islamic Society was constituted that oversees a small Musallah. This year was by far the most number of Muslims that have been seen coming for Taraweeh prayers.

Gladstone is a thriving city and have seen a huge influx of people, thanks to at least four gas projects at Curtis Island and due to this there has been a significant increase in Muslims moving to Gladstone.

Eid prayer for this year was offered at Calliope RSL club and was attended by people of all ages. It was attended by close to 70 people.

The Eid prayer was lead by Syed Quadri and Kutba was lead by Brother Gafoor who is the local Imam/Ameer.

After the Kuthba it was time to enjoy the food from different parts of the world, ranging from Indonesian to Malaysian to Belgian food.

'It was nice to see the whole community come together for such a momentous occasion and may Allah keep this Ummah united, " Mr Qadri told CCN.

The As-Salaam Institute of Brisbane raised funds to put together a food hamper containing a number of items. The hampers, each valued at $35, were distributed through MDA and included: 3L longlife milk;  4 cans diced tomato; 1 jar tomato paste; 2L cooking oil; 3kg pasta; 2kg sugar; 1pkt tea (100 teabags); 2kg flour; 5kg rice

CANBERRA: The group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Canberra has taken its fight over the proposed Gungahlin mosque to the ACT Supreme Court.

The group delivered thousands of flyers to Gungahlin homes in June, urging residents to oppose the mosque because of its ''social impact'', ''public interest'' and concerns about traffic and noise.

The public notification period for the development closed on July 6, with the ACT Planning and Land Authority receiving more than 50 submissions.

The Concerned Citizens of Canberra asked for the window to be reopened but were knocked back on August 6.

They have now filed papers in the ACT Supreme Court saying the refusal was ''likely to result in a denial of natural justice''.

They claim the planning authority's decision not to extend the comment period was an ''improper exercise'' of their power. The group has waged a concerted campaign against the mosque.

The secretive participants in the campaign consistently told media and government that they were concerned with local planning issues, including traffic and noise.

But The Canberra Times revealed in June that Irwin Ross, the group's spokesman, was a Christian fundamentalist activist who lived at least 15 kilometres from the proposed Valley Avenue site.

Documents filed in the Supreme Court identify Mr Ross as the group's public officer.

Mr Ross describes himself as a pastor with Olive Tree Ministries who hosts fortnightly meetings at a prayer house in Yarralumla.

Associates of the Higgins resident have said he is known in Canberra's Christian community for his stridently pro-Israel views.

The statement of claim filed with the court was supported by affidavits from Mr Ross and Jill Ross, but these were not made available to The Canberra Times yesterday.

The ACT Government Solicitor's Office has flagged its intention to respond to the claim.

But it queried whether the Concerned Citizens group was actually a legal person - an individual or corporation - and competent to launch legal proceedings.

The court yesterday gave the group permission to resubmit its claim in light of its recent incorporation, which the ACT Office of Regulatory Services website dates to July 27 this year. The matter is due back in court in October. The case comes as the ACT Government prepares to introduce changes to the territory's Discrimination Act in response to the anti-mosque campaign.

The bill, to be tabled by Attorney-General Simon Corbell in the Legislative Assembly next week, will add religion to the list of vilification offences in the ACT.

A Human Rights Commission review of the flyer recommended the territory's Discrimination Act be reformed to include better provisions for discrimination against religious groups.

Researchers from Griffith University (including Dr Adem Sav as the senior researcher) are conducting a research project that will investigate people's perspectives on the impact that ongoing health (chronic and long term) conditions have on them or their family members, and the support community pharmacy (pharmacies that operate in the community) can provide with managing these conditions.

The research team want to know more about your experiences, needs and expectations of health services such as pharmacies that you think could help assist you with managing treatment. Eligible participants will be reimbursed for their time. Full reimbur

There are over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world today, making up approximately 23% of the world's population, or more than one-fifth of mankind.

The Muslim500 publication is part of an annual series that provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. It gives valuable insight into the different ways that Muslims impact the world, and also shows the diversity of how people are living as Muslims today.

The 2011 Muslim500 lists the world's most influential Muslims who have impacted on their community, or on behalf of their community. Influence is: any person who has the power (be it cultural, ideological, financial, political or otherwise) to make a change that will have a significant impact on the Muslim World. The impact can be either positive or negative. The influence can be of a religious scholar directly addressing Muslims and influencing their beliefs, ideas and behaviour, or it can be of a ruler shaping the socio-economic factors within which people live their lives, or of artists forming popular culture.

Over the coming weeks, CCN will publish a personality selected from the list:

No. 35

Sheikh Mohammed Ali Al Sabouni
Scholar of Tafsir

Country: Syria
Born: 1 Jan 1930 (age 81)
Source of Influence: Scholarly
Influence: Significant scholarly influence as the leading contemporary authority on Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir)
School of Thought: Traditional Sunni, Hanafi

An internationally respected Islamic scholar of tafsir, or  Qur’anic exegesis, Sheikh al Sabouni is widely acclaimed for  his short commentaries of the Qur’an.

Popular Commentaries

Al Sabouni is influential because of his easy-to-read, simplified commentaries of the Holy Qur’an. They are now thought of as some of the most popular short commentaries in history after those of Jalalayn, Baydawi, Nasafi and Ibn Juzayy. One of al Sabouni’s most influential commentaries is the Tafsir Ayat Al Ahkam, an exploration of the Qur’anic verses that pertain to legal rulings.

Traditional Authority

The Institute of Scientific Research and Revival of Islamic Heritage at the Umm Al Qura University in Mecca, Saudi Arabia  commissioned al Sabouni to investigate the ancient tafsir  manuscript of Abu Jaafar al Nahas (d. 949 CE/338AH). Al Sabouni’s landmark achievement of  verifying the only surviving manuscript of the text has come to fruition as a six  volume work published by the university.

Dear Editor,

In an effort to educate our community about the differences between asylum seekers and refugees...

I've encountered much criticism and negativity toward asylum seekers by members of the Muslim community in Brisbane.

Most of it is due to a lack of knowledge. Hence I've put this very simplified visual together to explain it.

The rise of the affluent Muslim traveller

Muslims are predicted to make up almost one in three of the world's population by 2025, and increasing numbers of well-heeled, well-educated Muslims are already seeking out goods and services that meet their needs - not only at home, but also when they travel.

An early morning call from Malaysia. It's an old friend enquiring about London's best halal hotel.

Enthused by the coverage of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and Mo Farah's double gold wins, he has decided to visit London with his family as soon as Ramadan finishes this month.

He would like to stay in a Muslim-friendly hotel, do I have any suggestions?

I ask a few friends and search some Muslim websites - only to draw a blank. The closest London can offer is a vegetarian-friendly hotel. But it's not just the assurance of halal food that my friend is hoping for.

He'd like to go somewhere which is considerate of his family's other needs as Muslims, such as guidance on finding the direction of Mecca inside the hotel room for prayer times, alcohol-free dining areas, perhaps separate spa facilities for men and women.

My friend is part of a growing worldwide trend. Global urban Muslims, highly educated, well-travelled, often with families spread across different continents, they are increasingly seeking out goods and services that respect and reflect their needs as Muslims.

Q: Dear Kareema, my husband is desperately trying to lose his stomach fat but just can’t seem to shift it. He is quite fit as he’s been active for a while but needs help with losing the fat.

A: Men can significantly shrink abdominal fat by sprinting on an exercise bike for roughly 20 minutes, three times a week. Maybe he can get into the gym and do a couple of cycle classes if you don’t have a bike at home.

Studies show that the activity is at least as effective as jogging for about an hour a day, seven days a week (so he’ll have less impact on the joints).

I can’t stress enough how important diet is, especially when it comes to fat loss. Smaller meals more often and move whenever possible.

Jallalludin and Mula Nasruddin were sitting in the local kebab shop when Nasruddin noticed that his friend was very quiet and depressed.

Mula Nasruddin enquired of his friend as to the reason for his melancholy. 'I think I'm going to divorce my wife, she hasn't spoken to me in eighteen months.'

Mula Nasruddin puts down his halloumi thoughtfully and after a while responds, 'Think it over a bit more, Jallalludin; women like that are hard to find.'
