The Holland Park Update
CCN's embedded mussallie at Holland Park Mosque, The Flying Dutchman, filed in this report from his neck of the woods:
During the last ten days of Ramadan Qiyamul Layl is being conducted by Qari Mehboob Ul Haq from 10pm to 12am. We hope to accomplish the completion of three Qurans in the last ten days.
After the Qiyamul Layl, Imam Uzair Akbar will give a Fiqh talk from 12am to 1am.
Incidentally, around Sehri time you can catch Taraweeh live from the Haram on AsiaSat 3.
For those who don't have a Satellite TV set up, you can log on to Channel Islam (www.ciinetwork.com or www.channelislam.com) and hear it live in audio format.
And finally.... It seems Imam Uzair is quite the star, his talks will be heard in two continents! We have just been informed that Channel Islam in South Africa will be broadcasting Imam Uzair's talk over there network.
A Ray of Hope for Victims
A cheque of $100 000 was presented to the Fred Hollows Foundation by Rahman Deen to Sue Larsen at the Algester BBQ last night (29 October). The money was raised in a little over two weeks in response the the South Asia Earthquake appeal.
Rahman's cry for help received an overwhelming response from the Southern African Islamic Communities in Brisbane.
Half the sum was raised through the Algester Mosque.
Thanks to the quick response of people like Br. Deen and his supporters, the operation was able to deliver tents, food, blankets, medicines, doctors and medical equipment

Chief and Drummers - Ramadhan in Ghana
by Ibrahim Abu Gurunshi
Early Start
The days of Ramadhan begin early in the morning. Around 4.00 am drummers walk round the village from house to house playing their drums and singing to wake everyone up. Then people begin preparing the morning meal - everyone's favourite is soup with "tuo zafi", a soft meal made from maize flour. The fast begins by 4.45 am , and no one eats or drinks till sunset.
Fruit for the Fasting
Just before sunset people gather in our mosque and read the Qur'an as we wait for the muezzin to call the adhan (call to prayer) to mark the end of the fast. People bring fruit and water to the mosque to share with each other. In Ramadhan we like to invite friends and relatives to our house where we share a meal after sunset. The days continue like this until thirty days have passed.
Eid Drums
At the end of Ramadhan we celebrate Eid. The Eid prayer is held in an open field where Muslims from the nearby villages and towns gather. After the prayers, the chiefs ride majestically on horseback while the people follow them playing drums, dancing and singing Muslim songs through the streets until we reach the chief Imam's house. Everyone gathers at the Imam's house to make dua and share some food and drink together.
Before leaving for home, people visit the poor and sick and give them food and money so that everyone can enjoy the day of Eid - rich and poor
Storytime
Later on in the day children put on their best clothes and visit people in the village. Everyone likes to give them food, money and sweets. After nightfall a few of the elders gather the children together in the middle of the village to tell stories. Sometimes they recount religious stories about the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), his companions, and famous imams and sheikhs, and other times they tell traditional stories about our tribe and where we came from, our history and the battles we fought in the past.
[Man-on-the-Mussallaah]: On some mornings during Ramadhan I would have paid good money to have people turn up outside my house at 3am to wake me up with the sounds of drums and singing.
And on another point I wonder how our Imams would react to the suggestion that we all turn up at their homes straight after Eid Salaat. Of course we'd have to keep our end of the bargain and play our drums, dance and sing Muslim songs through the streets until we got there. Any takers?
The Citizens Foundation Earthquake Relief Fund
Several Brisbane ladies have got together to collect funds for the purchase of blankets and tents for the victims of the recent earthquake.
The blankets cost $4 and the tents $135 and these items are being sourced from India and Pakistan and distributed by The Citizens Foundation, a professionally managed, not-for-profit organization.
Please call any of the following ladies if you would like to find out more about the drive or to donate money.

Think Like an Indian.......
There is this good old barber in London....
One day a florist goes to him for a haircut. After the cut, he goes to pay the barber and the barber replies:
"I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing community service."
The florist is happy and leaves the shop.
Next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, there is a "thank you" card and a dozen roses waiting at his door.
A policeman goes for a haircut and he also goes to pay the barber after the cut.
But the barber replies: "I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing community service.
The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning the barber goes to open his shop, there is a thank you card and a dozen donuts are waiting at his door.
An Indian software engineer goes for a haircut and he also goes to pay the barber after the cut.
But the barber replies: "I am sorry. I cannot accept money from you. I am doing the community service. "
The Indian software engineer is happy and leaves.
The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop, guess what he finds there...
Did you know that the most poisonous snake in the world is found right here in Australia? It can kill a wombat faster than you can say "Where's Wally?"
