Deputy Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, formally launched the Muslim Business Network (MBN) on Thursday night at a function in Parliament House that exuded elegance as much as it did sophistication.
While there was an obvious dearth of politicians along the corridors of Parliament House as a consequence of some earnest hustings taking place around the State, there was no shortage of the key protagonists in the grand Dining Halls where large portraits of the Queen and the past Premiers of Queensland overlooked the proceedings. (What old Jo would have made of this colourful crowd, gathered together within these hallowed Halls of Power, could make for interesting conjecture).
Assuming the mantle of the Premier as well as that of her own, Ms Anna Bligh addressed the 200-strong guests and members acknowledging the important networking role that MBN was playing, while Minister of Police, Judy Spence, gushed eloquently over her personal association with MBN from its early, fledgling days.
In his keynote address, past Mayor of the City of Hume in Victoria, Burhan Yigit, encouraged the Muslims of Australia to reach out to beyond the confines of their communities and participate with equal fervour with the wider Australian Society. He went on to quote Theordore Roosevelt:
"It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."
"...the man who really counts in the world is the doer, not the mere critic-the man who actually does the work, even if roughly and imperfectly, not the man who only talks or writes about how it ought to be done."
"Criticism is necessary and useful; it is often indispensable; but it can never take the place of action, or be even a poor substitute for it. The function of the mere critic is of very subordinate usefulness. It is the doer of deeds who actually counts in the battle for life, and not the man who looks on and says how the fight ought to be fought, without himself sharing the stress and the danger."
Former Federal MP, ConSciacca, acknowledged the support from members of the Muslim community during his Federal election campaign a few years back. He subsequently lost the elections, but hastened to add that his political demise should in no way be ascribed to this association.
President of MBN, HaniefKhatree, described the important contribution of Muslims to the economy of the State, and to emphasize this very point eleven Muslim movers and shakers representing various shades of entrepreneurial endeavours were profiled.

Our Man-on-the-Mussalaah could not help observing that the large number of women present who dominated centre stage on the night would surely have put paid, once and for all, to the myth that patriarchalism was an inherent trait of Islamic culture.
Following on from a number of impressive events organized in recent months, the MBN launch was yet another demonstration that the Muslim Community has certainly come of age and prepared to take a proactive role in engaging with other communities to help counter the stereotypical views currently in vogue.

A variety of artwork, pottery, calligraphy, jewellery and paintings from the Islamic world were on display last Friday night at the QUT as part of the closing celebrations of Islamic Awareness Week.
The documentary of the life of Prophet Muhammad (SWT), Muhammad Legacy of the Prophet, made for compelling viewing.
CCN congratulates the individuals and organizations who put the many events together, and in particular, the sterling work of Umar Batchelor, Muhammed Jangda, Idris Jangda, IshqiShuaib, ShabnaazSheikh, MehnaazSheikh, Al Assad Fuwaad, IsmailEssof, NadeemMalik, UmarFlynn, YusraAdams and the various organizations including MYUNITY, FAMSY, QMT, MohamadAbdallah and GIRU and the Islamic Societies of the Mosques that took part.
The Algester Alert
Every alternate Wednesday evening, religious classes are being held at the Islamic Society of Algester. These classes have been positioned so as not to clash with other women’s classes being held at the Kuraby Mosque.
The next class will be held on Wednesday, 30 August 2006 at 8:00pm.
Classes will be conducted by Maulana Mohammed Aslam and Maulana Mohammed Nawaaz on a rotational basis.

The demand for tickets for the emergency benefit concert and dinner organized by the Al-Nisa Youth group and Fair Go For Palestine and held last night (Saturday) to raise funds for the victims of the recent crisis in Lebanon and Palestine was far in excess of the supply, so much so that there were many left disappointed at not being able to attend.
The fortunate 250 who did succeed in securing a seat in the St Andrews Church Hall were treated to the songs of Phil Monsour and Sheikh Ahmad Abu Ghazaleh and a Lebanese-styled meal and sweets.
Hussin Goss, who has raised over $2million from auctions for various causes over the past decade and a half, was at hand to do the honours again.
