The Principal and her Principles

The Australian International Islamic College (Durack) is holding its annual fete today (Sunday).

CCN caught up with Ms. Lisa Khalid, the recently appointed Principal of the School.

------------------------

[CCN] How do you see your new role and what are your expectations and teaching philosophies?

[Khalid] My appointment as a Principal at the Australian International Islamic College is a great challenge and experience.

As the School Principal, I would like to set high expectation on discipline.

Discipline is vital to every living being.

It is discipline that unites man to man, one society to another.

Discipline has to be observed in speech, in sport and in every kind of relationship.

Students should learn the right way of doing things even in ordinary actions like sitting, talking or reading. If discipline of the school improves, grades and test scores would increase.

Parents’ involvement and support is very essential too.

When parents are involved in children’s schools and education, children have higher grades, improved behavior at home and school, and better social skills and adaptation to school.

[CCN] Teaching seems to be more than just a job with you.

[Khalid] Yes, absolutely! Reflecting back at my childhood, I used to put on my mom’s heels, carry some books, pretending to be a teacher.

I used to teach my sister and helped her out with school work.

All my life, I’ve always been engrossed with teaching.

[CCN] You have been involved with teaching at every level of the business.

[Khalid] Yes. Two weeks after graduation, I was appointed a lecturer at a private college in Malaysia. It was my first experience into formal teaching.

I moved on from private colleges to an international school. At the International Islamic School, Kuala Lumpur, I was a teacher of both Primary and Secondary students.

I was also involved in some translation work for the school.

At the International Islamic School, I moved on from a teacher to Head of Humanities Department, then to the Vice Principal of Administration and later as Vice Principal of Academic.

My wide exposure in the area of communication has encouraged me to do a Masters programme in Corporate Communication.

I believe, as an educationist, one has to have good communication skills in order to get the message properly delivered.

I have learned a lot through times, and I will continue to learn. After all, learning is a lifelong process.

Malaysia's Hajj Tracking System

A leading Malaysian university has designed a program that employs modern technology to help track the whereabouts of pilgrims during their soul-searching journey of hajj.

"The prototype was a big success," Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said announcing the program during the second "National Seminar on Hajj Best Practices" in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), one of the country's most prominent public universities, has been working on the Pilgrim Tracking Management System (PTMS) since last year.

The program, designed in cooperation with Umm-Al-Qura University (UQU) in Makkah, is instrumented to track the progress and the whereabouts of pilgrims during hajj.

"USM launched the PTMS prototype last year using the luggage of several local respondents performing the hajj," Ahmad said.

"A pilot study will be conducted during the coming Hajj season."

In the next stage, the minister added, USM researchers will use radio-frequency identification (RFID) to track the movement of pilgrims.

He said pilgrims from all over the world would be able to use the new technology once it proved successful.

The PTMS would be introduced into the market within the next five years.

"The Services in Mecca and Madinah need to be adapted to modern technology and USM is creating a system that can be used for the next 50 to 100 years, while also accounting for the needs of a growing number of pilgrims performing the Haj,”  Ahmad said.

When completed, the tracking system will include passport, health, baggage and pilgrim monitoring RFID tags that would be scanned at several locations in Makkah.

More than two million Muslims flock to Saudi Arabia every year to perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.

Every able-bodied adult Muslim — who can financially afford the trip — must perform hajj once in their lifetime.

Malaysian officials say the USM program is meant to use modern technology to offer a better environment for pilgrims.

"USM is one of many institutions worldwide that has been given the task of developing products and services to create a better environment for pilgrims performing hajj," said Minister Ahmad.

He underlined the need to use technology to overcome movement difficulties facing pilgrims.

"The services in Makkah and Madinah need to be adapted to modern technology.

"USM is creating a system that can be used for the next 50 to 100 years, while also accounting for the needs of a growing number of pilgrims performing hajj."

Over the past few years, Saudi authorities have been working to employ modern technology to facilitate hajj rituals.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj is working on a sophisticated broadcasting network and new safety standards for vehicle tunnels and pedestrian routes for the hajj season in November.

Last December, the kingdom announced plans to set up five monorails, a single rail serving as the track for a wheeled or magnetically levitating vehicle, to ease the movement of the faithful in the holy sites.

It also has a SR20-billion project to link Makkah and Madinah by a railway system.

National to pay $35m for stake in property trust

THE National Australia Bank will spend around $35 million for an interest in what is likely to become the world's first listed industrial property trust compliant with Islamic Shariah law.

NabInvest, the bank's direct investment management business, has formed a joint venture with Oxley Corporate that will own 80 per cent of the company, which manages the $S967 million ($774 million) Singapore-listed Cambridge Industrial Trust.

The trust is currently seeking unitholder approval to convert to a Shariah-complaint REIT to cash in on growing wealth in the Middle East.

But the trust will first have to finalise a Shariah-compliant financing solution for $S369.3 million of interest-bearing loans, because to be Shariah-compliant, a REIT must not pay or receive interest.

While the Islamic Bank of Asia has been appointed adviser for the conversion, the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corp is advising on the refinancing solution.

Shariah law will also prevent the trust from stockbroking or share trading in non-compliant securities and conventional insurance. Also outlawed will be investments involving hotels or resorts and some entertainment activities that include gambling or gaming, involvement in the manufacture or sale of non-halal goods and the sale of tobacco-based products.

As well as approval from unitholders, the Singapore Stock Exchange must also give its blessing.

Approvals will make the NAB-managed trust the world's first Shariah-compliant industrial REIT and Singapore's first publicly listed Shariah-compliant REIT.

Analysts said the industrial trust would get greater access to a new investor pool when raising capital or debt.

The trust's current portfolio consists of 43 buildings, all of which are fully leased.

Ahmed Fahour, the head of NAB's Australian business, is a Muslim. The bank has attempted to build bridges with the Islamic community by operating a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship in Islamic finance, which is named after Australia's Islamic spiritual leader, Sheik Fehmi Naji al-imam.

Cheng Ho the Chinese admiral was Muslim

If you followed the Beijing Opening Ceremony closely on Friday night you will have noticed a scene being played out in which the exploits of a certain Muslim Admiral was depicted.

CCN dug this bit of history regarding this man in question:

Decades before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of a water route to Asia, the Chinese were exploring the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific with seven voyages of the "Treasure Fleet" that solidified Chinese control over much of Asia in the 15th century.

The Treasure Fleets were commanded by a powerful eunuch admiral named Cheng Ho. Cheng Ho was born around 1371 in China's southwestern Yunan Province (just north of Laos) with the name Ma Ho.

Ma Ho's father was a Muslim hajji (who had made a pilgrimage to Mecca) and the family name of Ma was used by Muslims in representation of the word Mohammed.

When Ma Ho was ten years old (around 1381), he was captured along with other children when the Chinese army invaded Yunan to take control over the region. At the age of 13 he was castrated, as were other young prisoners, and he was placed as a servant in the household of the Chinese Emperor's fourth son (out of twenty-six total sons), Prince Zhu Di.

Ma Ho proved himself to be an exceptional servant to Prince Zhu Di. He became skilled in the arts of war and diplomacy and served as an officer of the prince. Zhu Di renamed Ma Ho as Cheng Ho.

Cheng Ho, who was said to have been seven feet tall, was given greater power when Zhu Di became emperor in 1402. One year later, Zhu Di appointed Cheng Ho admiral and ordered him to oversee the construction of a Treasure Fleet to explore the seas surrounding China.

New evidence suggests he could well have discovered America and Australia and the map used by Columbus was obtained by the Portuguese from the Chinese!

Obama's New Muslim Adviser Resigns

Sen. Barack Obama's director of Muslim outreach has resigned amid controversy, just a few weeks after joining Obama's presidential campaign.

Attorney Mazen Asbahi started working as the campaign's outreach coordinator on July 26, and he resigned on Monday. In a letter, he said he was stepping down "to avoid distracting from Barack Obama's message of change," the Associated Press reported.

The A.P. said Asbahi resigned amid questions about his connection to an imam linked to people who allegedly raised funds for Hamas.

Publisher Random House has pulled a novel about Islam over protest fears

"The Jewel of Medina," a debut novel by journalist Sherry Jones, 46, was due to be published next Tuesday and an eight-city publicity tour had been scheduled.

The novel traces the life of A'isha from her engagement to Mohammed, when she was six, until the prophet's death.

Jones said that she was shocked to learn in May, that publication would be postponed indefinitely.

"I have deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Mohammed ... I envisioned that my book would be a bridge-builder," said Jones.

Random House deputy publisher Thomas Perry said in a statement the company received "cautionary advice not only that the publication of this book might be offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment."

He added: "In this instance we decided, after much deliberation, to postpone publication for the safety of the author, employees of Random House, booksellers and anyone else who would be involved in distribution and sale of the novel."

Cape Christian preacher calls Islam a puppet religion

Muslim pupils at the Groote Schuur High School in Cape Town, South Africa are angry about alleged derogatory remarks about Islam during an assembly.

They claim a Christian preacher called Islam a puppet religion.

He also said that “Jesus is alive, unlike that thing Allah”

The education department says it is investigating.

The Muslim pupils staged a walk-out in response to the comments but teachers prevented them from leaving.

A parent says after the incident, one of the teachers told the pupils to simply "get over it".

The school principal in unavailable for comment but another school official says a meeting is organised for parents tonight.

Muslim Judicial Council’s spokesperson, Nabaweeya Malik, says they are appalled by the incident.

They have referred the matter to the Cape provincial education authorities for investigation.

One anonymous parent says she is deeply disappointed at the incident and cannot understand how the school’s management could allow such statements to be made.

Riyadh: Saudi authorities have intensified preparations to receive Umrah pilgrims in Makkah and visitors of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.

Kareema's Keep Fit Column

Parents ignoring that our kids are getting fatter

Australian parents seem to be ignoring the expanding waistlines of their offspring, as new research in the Medical Journal of Australia shows...

The last ten years has seen a hundred per cent increase in obesity levels among pre-schoolers, and many parents appear not to be recognising the signs which can be indicative of health problems later in life. In a study of parental attitudes to childhood obesity, 324 mothers of four year olds were interviewed.

Dr Michele Campbell, who led a research team at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, reported that only a quarter of mothers of overweight or obese children (as defined by Body Mass Index) actually rated them as such, and 70 per cent of these mothers thought that their children weighed about the same as their classmates.

Only 17 per cent of all mothers interviewed were concerned about their children facing future overweight or obesity problems. Dr Campbell said that the findings, which mirror those reported in other westernised nations, indicate that the ramifications of overweight and obesity are not being absorbed by Australian parents, who appear not to notice their child’s expanding girth as being out of the ordinary due to the prevalence of overweight kids in society.

Parents who do recognise the seriousness of the issue have to address it carefully, encouraging healthy eating whilst avoiding making their children overly weight and image conscious. Children need to follow a good eating, and exercising example set by parents in the home; it’s no good for parents who lead an unhealthy or sedentary lifestyle to tell their kids to do as they say and not as they do. Some children will grow out of their ‘puppy fat’, but without adopting a more active lifestyle and a healthier eating regime, they could be setting themselves up for a future blighted by health problems.

One day Mula Nasruddin and his friend Jalalludin were walking through the woods when they saw some rabbit droppings.

Jalalludin said, "What is that?"

"They're smart pills," said Mula Nasruddin. "Eat them and they'll make you smarter. "

So Jalalludin ate them and said, "These taste like crap."

"See," said Mula Nasruddin, "you're getting smarter already."
