New
Muslim Medical Body Established in Queensland
In response to the rapid
growth in the number of
Muslim health professionals
in Brisbane and across
Queensland in recent years a
group of doctors, dentists
and allied health
professionals came together
early this year to establish
the Islamic Medical
Association of Queensland
(IMAQ).
Interim president of the
fledgling association, Dr
Mohammed Iqbal Sultan,
told CCN that the primary
objectives of IMAQ were to
provide Muslim medical
professionals with a forum
to network with each other,
and a platform from which
ideas, projects and
practices can be
disseminated both within and
outside of the Muslim
community.
In addition to working
within an Islamic framework,
IMAQ will serve to embrace
and support the strengths
and talents of the many
foreign and locally
qualified graduates, as well
as students in Queensland,
many of whom come from a
variety of different
countries and cultures.
Dr Sultan and the interim
IMAQ committee have issued
an invitation to all
Queensland health
professionals to send in
their contact details to
admin@imaq.org.au as a
first step to establishing a
database and to join the
organization as members.
Further details on the
official launch of IMAQ will
be posted shortly.
Membership application forms
in
Word or
pdf format can be
emailed to
admin@imaq.org.au,
posted to IMAQ, PO
Box 243, Underwood, Qld 4119
or faxed to 07 5462 2355.

Australia’s Muslim Cameleers Exhibition in Melbourne
The cameleers' small Muslim
community were a feature of
Australian outback towns for
more than 50 years from
1860s-1930s.
Explore the remarkable
impact of Australia's Muslim
cameleers in transforming
central Australia.
This exhibition reveals the
remarkable contribution
which Australia’s first
Muslim community, from
Afghanistan and British
India, made to the
exploration and settlement
of Australia’s arid
interior.
Cameleers assisted all major
expeditions into Australia’s
uncharted interior starting
with the Burke and Wills
expedition in 1860 and have
contributed significantly to
Australia's economic and
cultural development.
These Muslim pioneers
provided the lifeblood for
many inland settlements,
isolated stations and mines,
and forged communication
routes through remote
Australia.

The
“brutal” Arm of the Victorian Police
AFIC press release
Commenting on the report in
yesterdays Australian
newspaper, Mr Ikebal Patel,
President of Muslims
Australia expressed dismay
at the allegations of
aggressive, disproportionate
and apartheid style
treatment metered out by
certain police officer’s
especially to African
Australians. These incidents
were reported in areas of
high concentration of
African background
communities in Melbourne.
Mr Patel was especially
concerned about the negative
messages such behaviour
sends out to the rest of the
community. “ We are
working extremely hard in
providing educational
programs and induction
courses on religion, culture
and co-existence to police
and other service providers.
By and large our efforts and
recommendations are heeded.
However, we are very
disappointed that some rogue
police officer’s think they
are police, judge and jury
and allow their personal
prejudice to interfere with
professional policing.”
Mr Patel, urged Victoria
Police Chief Commissioner
Simon Overland to
investigate these serious
allegations and stamp out
any acts of racism and
prejudice on the part of
serving police officers.
Mr Patel concluded, by
saying Muslims Australia’s
relationship with the police
forces across Australia is
excellent and we are proud
of the cooperation and
support police show when the
community is confronted
during difficult times. And
it is for these reasons that
a few rogue police officers
should not be allowed to
tarnish an otherwise fair
and just police service.
The
Op-Shop Update
By Janeth Deen
We have emptied our storage
sheds due to the high cost
of rental. For a short time
only, we have rented a
second shop in the Parkland
Shopping Centre in order to
sell some of the backlog of
stock. We do not want to
give the impression that we
have two shops to trade
from. InshAllah, we intend
to keep the original shop to
trade from.
It would be appreciated if
any available volunteers
could allocate some time to
help us, even if it is one
day a month. At present,
Janeth and Wilma are the
only two workers carrying
out the running of the shop
and Janeth has had to carry
out the welfare work also.
Work involved in the shop is
sorting and displaying
goods, serving customers,
cleaning the shop and
welfare work which entails
visiting those in need,
assessing theirs needs, and
fulfilling those needs, then
following up on their
welfare. We were thankful
for help given us by Hindu
and Sikh students who gave
us four of their weekends to
help us move the stock from
the storage sheds. We also
wish to acknowledge the fact
that brother Hanif Deen
provided his utility and
fuel for us to move our
stock out of the sheds.
We are urgently in need of a
dining room table and six
chairs, a lounge suite, a
microware, a TV cabinet, TV
and a blender for a family
who are experiencing
difficulties. This family is
not eligible to source
centrelink payments. The
family has eleven children,
six of whom are still at
home. The mother has beeen
traumatised by the effects
of war in her home country,
(she survived a gunshot
wound through the face) and
the father is seeking
employment. They have
migrated from New Zealand
for health reasons and could
not bring their furniture or
personal effects with them
due to the expense of
transport. Some members of
the family have medical
problems. They will be
grateful for the donation of
goods requested.
Please contact me, Janeth
Deen, on my mobile 0435 086
796.if you can assist this
family in any way.

HIFZ GRADUATION JALSA – Yet
again Qari Fidaur Rahman's amazes Queenslanders by
producing more home grown Huffaz. Boys and Girls, who
have memorised the entire Qur'an, will be having their
graduation ceremony at Kuraby Masjid tonight, Masha
Allah. The programme starts after Maghrib Salaat and
light meals will be served thereafter.
CIQ MEETING – The Imams of
Queensland will be meeting at Dara Masjid today (Sunday)
as part of their ongoing concerns in the fulfilment of
their duties as Imams.
EMBRACING ISLAM - Two people
have emailed me expressing their wish to embrace Islam.
However, I always encourage them to learn more about
Islam and know what it entails before making a decision.
REVERT CLASSES THIS WEEK -
We will be conducting classes this week and the next.
Thereafter, classes will restart after the School
holidays.
MCF - "Muslim Charitable
Fund" invited over 20 Muslim organisations for their
meeting last Sunday, but only 7 responded, which is very
sad. The establishment of MCF was long needed here in
Queensland and they are doing a wonderful job. I just
wish that the organisations here should be more
supportive to such organisations.
COMMUNITY FEEDBACK MEETING -
"Community Feed Back Meeting" will take place at the
Gold Coast Masjid on the 28th March 2010 with regard to
"The Next Ten Years and Beyond" conference. Invitations
are being sent out to participants, insha Allah.

Workers' jihad at
Islamic website
Staff at
IslamOnline have gone on
strike. But is it about
workers' rights, religious
principles or national
rivalries?
Islamic advice websites aren't the first
thing that spring to mind when talking of strikes,
sit-ins and workers' occupations, but if there's any
proof needed that Egypt's extraordinary wave of
industrial action is reaching every corner of the
nation, then today's drama at IslamOnline.net fits the
bill.
With more than 120,000 hits a day and a global reach
that extends through several languages, IslamOnline is
one of the biggest and most influential Muslim websites
in the world. From Baghdad to Basildon, Muslims use it
as a key source of scholarly advice on everything from
impotency to the insurgency in Iraq.
So the question of who owns and controls the site is a
vitally important one. And that's the question being
wrestled over today, after hundreds of staff walked out
in protest over what they say is an attempt by
conservatives in the Gulf to hijack the site and force
it to pursue a more traditional and hardline agenda.
Tension had been simmering for months between the
website's Cairo-based editorial offices and the managers
in Doha, whose plan this week to fire many of the 350
employees in Egypt led to an all-night occupation of the
company's offices, which was still continuing at the
time of writing.
The Guardian
Cartoonist lampoons
niqab, angers Muslims in Canada
A
controversial cartoon in a
Montreal newspaper at the
weekend has further fuelled
the niqab controversy and
angered Muslims in Canada.
The controversy, which was
sparked by a Muslim woman's
refusal in November to
remove her veil in her
French language class in
Montreal, has been further
inflamed by the
controversial cartoon in the
Montreal Gazette at the
weekend. In the cartoon, a
Muslim woman is depicted in
niqab from top to toes, with
the slit space for her eyes
shown in jail bars and a
lock.
Defending it, the cartoonist
Terry Mosher said he drew it
to oppose the Muslim woman's
argument in favour of the
veil and encourage debate
over the issue.
'In the (Montreal) Gazette
this morning, there is
actually an editorial in
support of the woman, and
yet my cartoon is against
it. So that is part of the
discussion and I think
that's a very healthy
thing,'' the cartoonist told
the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation.
The
controversy erupted after
the Muslim woman Naima Atef
Amed, a mother of three who
is a new immigrant to
Canada, filed a petition
with the human rights
commission in Quebec
province for violations of
her religious rights two
weeks ago.
But the
director of the college -
CEGEP de Saint-Laurent - in
Montreal said they tried to
accommodate the woman's
demands by allowing her to
wear the niqab, giving her
the front seat and letting
her make her presentations
from the rear of the
classroom with her back to
the class so that boys male
students didn't see her.
Matters came to a head when
the woman asked male
students to move away from
her and refused to sit with
them around a U-table for
conversation skill
development classes.

Indian atheist
embraces Islam
RIYADH: A well-known
Indian psychotherapist embraced Islam on Thursday.
Dr.
Periyadarshan, who has changed his name to Abdullah,
told Arab News Friday that Islam is the only religion in
the world that follows a book directly revealed from
God.
He said that as a student of comparative religions he
believes books of other faiths have not been directly
revealed to mankind from God. He said the Holy Qur’an is
still in the same format and style as it was revealed to
the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) from Almighty Allah.
Dr. Abdullah is a visiting professor at the University
of California in Los Angeles.
He also acted in the famous Tamil film “Karuthamma”
about the killing of newborn baby girls in some remote
villages in India. The production received national
award from the Indian government.
“I was well known in India for my atheist theology and
later I became to realize that religion is the only way
out for human beings both in this world as well as in
the hereafter,” he said.
Dr. Abdullah will be performing Umrah on Saturday on his
first visit to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

Interpreter of
Maladies by
Jhumpa Lahiri
Synopsis
Navigating between the
Indian traditions they've inherited and the baffling new
world, the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri's elegant,
touching stories seek love beyond the barriers of
culture and generations.
In "A Temporary Matter,"
published in The New Yorker, a young Indian-American
couple faces the heartbreak of a stillborn birth while
their Boston neighbourhood copes with a nightly blackout.
In the title story, an interpreter guides an American
family through the India of their ancestors and hears an
astonishing confession.
Lahiri writes with deft cultural
insight reminiscent of Anita Desai and a nuanced depth
that recalls Mavis Gallant.
She is an important and
powerful new voice.

Kareema's Keep Fit Q&A Column
Q: Dear
Kareema, I'm entering the annual Creswalk again this
year and would love to improve on my finishing-time.
I haven't
really done much about it over the last 3 years and I
really want to concentrate on getting a better outcome
this year.
What can I
do to make a difference or what do you suggest I try in
order to get a better result?
A: The best
thing to do is start preparing yourself now for race
day!
The earlier
you start your training regime, the better.
I suggest you
have a look at what you did in the past during the weeks
leading up to the race / walk.
Increase the
time you would spend exercising by 5 or 10mins whenever
you can.
Include
interval training sessions (fast and slow pace) as part
of your regime.
Try strength
training if it's not something you would have done in
the past, and increase your intencity levels.
Remember that
stretching and a healthy diet is just as important as
everything else you're doing to prepare your body for
race day.
The more you
vary your workouts, the better for you.
Your muscles
won't become accustomed to doing the same thing over and
over...
Keep your eye
on this column as well, I will guide readers through a
six week pre-race program (for all fitness levels)!
If you start
your program today, you can incorporate some of my
program into what you would already be doing and have a
great head-start!
Always think
positive and stay motivated!
Remember,
whatever the outcome on the day - the most important is
that you did your absolute best and had fun while doing
it!! N-JOY...
