Faith drives Muslim footballer

THE AFL's first devout Muslim footballer will tell his Essendon teammates he prays five times a day, hates a beer and steers clear of nightclubs.

Bachar Houli joined the Dons yesterday as the No.42 pick in the AFL's National Draft. Believed to be Islam's first AFL representative, Houli said he aimed to be a role model for young Muslims and help bridge Australia's cultural divide.

Houli, 18, plans to observe religous fasts when it does not conflict with game day and to work at his parents' Werribee fish and chip shop as often as he can.

His parents migrated from Lebanon 30 years ago.

But the Tarneit teenager said public focus on his religion would not stop him achieving on the football field.

"I'm not only devoted to my religion, I want to succeed at the highest level in footy," Houli said.

Young talent ... "I'm not only devoted to my religion,

I want to succeed at the highest level in footy," said Bachar Houli.

He admitted he led a remarkably different lifestyle to that of most AFL footballers, but said his religion was an advantage.

"It is good for me, it gives me discipline as a person," he said.

"I pray fives times a day . . . I can't go out in the nightlife and have a drink and become uncontrollable."

The teenager plans to explain his beliefs to his teammates.

"I will make people aware that I can't drink alcohol or can't do (some of the) things they can do," he said.

"Surely I will have the respect that everyone deserves."

The talented midfielder was snapped up by Essendon as a result of strong performances at the National Draft camp last month.

Houli fasted during sunlight hours for two weeks before the camp for Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

He broke the fast, with the permission of Muslim leaders, only 24 hours before gruelling fitness tests.

"I spoke to them and they gave me the all clear," Houli said.

The teenager said he would continue to consult Muslim leaders over any conflicts between his faith and football.

The young left-footer began playing football at Spotswood Under 12s without telling his parents. He said his parents did not understand Australian football at the time.

He confessed he was playing the sport when he brought home a bagful of trophies and received his parents' blessing.

Houli said being drafted was a personal goal, but he hoped it would inspire other Australian Muslims to reach for their dreams.

"It is huge for me," he said. "It also opens up the way for other Muslims around the community to know they can make the highest level."

Al-Nisa Youth Forum Cancelled

Al-Nisa has received a very limited number of registrations to date, which makes running the forum, at this stage, an uneconomic and impractical exercise.

The feedback Al-Nisa has received about the lack of uptake is linked to timing.  The Summit date is around the time when school/university summer break starts which means a number of people will be overseas, at Hajj or starting work (high schools kids).

Another issues is reconciling the timing needs of the different groups of young people where some work on weekdays and others over weekends.

As such Al-Nisa has decided to adopt a new approach whereby they will go to young people at their places, for example, schools, universities, mosques etc. rather than wait for them to come to Al-Nisa. This approach will provide Al-Nisa with a degree of flexibility to address some of the timing issues.

AL-nisa' intends convening a series of focus groups from early February (after unis and schools start and people are back from overseas) to April 2007 (to allow for a regional reach).

There will be a high profile launch of the outcomes report in mid May 2007 as the vehicle for reaching services providers, politicians and leaders in the community who are the partners in this process.

It is hoped that this approach will help Al-Nisa not only gather information about young people's needs but also develop an understanding of how to approach and interact with them in the future.

Only in RSA!?! 'Pregnant' man needed a week off

A YOUNG South African was fined by a local court for taking time off from work and trying to cover it with a fake gynaecologist's certificate attesting he was pregnant and needed a week off.

A magistrate's court in Vereeniging, near Johannesburg, fined 27-year-old Charles Sibindana 1000 rand ($180) for the brazen forgery, the SAPA news agency reported.

Sibindana stole a medical certificate from a health centre used by his pregnant girlfriend, but was apparently unaware that only women consulted gynaecologists.

Magistrate Bruno Van Eeden warned Sibindana “not to walk around faking sick letters from gynaecologists”.

The CCN Chuckle

A man was selling his horse in the market.

Mula Nasruddin came to him and requested if he could get a test drive.

The man told Mula Nasruddin that this horse is unique.

In order to make it walk, you'll have to say Subhanallah.

To make it run, you'll have to say Alhamdulillah, and to make it stop, you'll have to say Allahu Akbar.

Mula Nasruddin sat on the horse and said Subhanallah. The horse started to walk.

Then he said Alhamdulillah, and it started to run.

He kept saying Alhamdulillah, and the horse started running faster, and faster.

All of a sudden Mula Nasruddin noticed that the horse was running towards the edge of the hill that he was riding on.

Being overly fearful, he forgot how to stop the horse.

He kept saying all these words out of confusion.

When the horse was just near the edge, he remembered, and said it loud ""ALLAHU AKBAR"".

The horse stopped just one step away from the edge.

The man took a deep breath, looked up towards the sky, and said "Alhamdulillah ... "
