The
Australian International Islamic College held its annual
Year 7 and Year 10 graduands ceremony at Michael's
Oriental Restaurant on Thursday (6 December).
In a very
dignified and well-organized event, the Principal,
Mr. Peter Mikalski, praised all the staff and
volunteers of his school for the successes they had
achieved for the school over the past year.
The
highlight of the evening was the part of the programme
when each of the students came up to the front of the
dining hall and spoke (many having only learnt the
English language as recently as last year) with passion
and undisguised emotion for the teachers and aides who
helped them to get to this point in their lives.

Mustafa Ally at a nikaah ceremony at the
Kuraby Mosque yesterday afternoon by Imam Peer.

Boring
Event Turns into a Brisbane Milestone
Local property developer,
Mr. Faisal Hatia, with Lord Mayor Campbell
Newman and Councillor Norm Wyndham for

Matilda - the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine).
The first tunnel crossing
below the Brisbane River was commissioned during
the week by Lord Mayor Campbell Newman – in a major
milestone to ease the city’s congestion woes.
Cr Newman started the turning of the 12-metre diameter
drilling cutter-face - the size of a three-storey
building – by pushing a small green button in the
control room.
The goliath machine for the North-South Bypass Tunnel (NSBT)
is now limbering up at Bowen Hills for its monumental
journey beneath the Brisbane River - three months ahead
of time.
The machine was given a ceremonious send-off with a
blessing by Canon Neville Knot and a champagne toast by
Sir William Jolly’s granddaughter.
Cr Newman said it was appropriate Jenni Jolly
inaugurated the TBM, as it was her grandfather
Brisbane’s first Lord Mayor that built the first
aboveground river-crossing over 70 years ago.
“Today, the NSBT is not only Brisbane’s first
underground river crossing. It is Brisbane’s
largest-ever road infrastructure project with two 4.8km
underground motorway tunnels reaching a depth of some 60
metres below ground,” he said.
“What you glimpse here today is a mind-boggling feat of
engineering – there’s been nothing like it before in
Brisbane. We are making history as we start on the most
important link in the city’s motorway ring road program
between Bowen Hills and Woolloongabba.
Cr Newman said his TransApex tunnel and bridge program
would help rid the city of the choking congestion
experienced for many years by taking through-traffic out
of the CBD.
“Motorists will be able to fast-track their cross-city
journeys along the bypass tunnel – and slash a third off
their journey times,” he said. “And it’ll cut inner city
traffic- like on the Story Bridge.”
Cr Newman said TBMs are traditionally female and named
through a public naming competition.
“I’m pleased to announce Brisbane’s first TBM is being
christened ‘Matilda’, a name by a female engineer. The
judges chose the name on its very Australian
credentials,” he said.
Cr Newman said he was pleased the people of Brisbane
named the machine that would be an integral Brisbane
player in the city’s future world-class infrastructure.
Today’s commissioning event was specially organised for
Saint Barbara’s day, the patron saint of tunnellers and
miners.
So far, over 200,000 tonnes out of a total of 3.5
million tonnes of spoil has been excavated and around
1,000 metres of tunnel and ramps.
The second tunnel borer is now in Brisbane and making
its way to site for assembly.
Kuraby
Madrassah puts on Jalsa
The
Kuraby Madrassah held its annual Jalsa at the
Springwood State School last weekend.
Parents
and friends of the madrassah watched the children
perform plays and speak on stage.
Several
Madrassah pupils were awarded trophies for high
achievement.
Australia's Surfing Imam
Imam Haisam Farache,
of the Lakema Mosque in Sydney, is part of a new wave of
home-grown Islamic clerics who are transforming the
religion in Australia.
The
members of the Muslim community are invited to be part
of a Special Dinner to acknowledge and thank Gary
Hardgrave, former Member of Parliament for Moreton,
for his contribution to the community during his long
term of office.
Seats are limited to 50 and will be allocated on a first
come first served basis.

MYServices Update
MYServices, in partnership with Brisbane City Council
and a number of other youth service providers, has been
involved in an interactive cultural awareness program
with Year 11 students of Sunnybank State High School.
This pilot program sought to promote a harmonic school
community through a better understanding and acceptance
of Muslim students and students of other religious
affiliations and cultures in the school. At the
completion of the seven-week program, teachers and
students reported a reduction in inter-racial fights (of
Year 11s, at school), and an increase in interaction
between the 64 cultures represented in the school.
Alhamdulillah, the very positive response from the
students was especially encouraging, with almost 90% of
students calling for such programs to be incorporated as
a year-long subject. Due to the success of the program,
teachers intend to duplicate it with junior year levels
next year.
MYServices has been assisting Youth Affairs Network of
Queensland in the Free-styling It Like Thorpe:
Young Muslim Women’s Participation in Sports
research, which examines young Muslim women’s
involvement in sports and the barriers they encounter.
The research report, along with its long awaited
recommendations, is set to be launched on the 10th
of December 2007 with stakeholders including, Al-Nisa’,
Department of Sports and Recreation, Brisbane City
Council, University of Queensland, PCYC, Logan City
Council and a number of Muslim women with a passion for
sports. An action/reference group, which will overlook
the implementation of the research’s recommendations,
will be chaired by Crescents of Brisbane’s
dynamic fitness guru, Kareema Benjamin. MYServices is
very grateful to Kareema for accepting this important
volunteer position.

and remember to take it easy as fetal heart rate rises
when mum is exercising.
Try some low impact activities such as fitball classes,
aqua, walking, swimming, etc.
Here are some facts relating to exercising during
pregnancy:
- Babies born to exercisers have less oxygen deficit
during labour
- They (babies) tolerate contractions better
- The incidence of cord entanglement is lower
- Fetal distress is significantly reduced

The best part is that the recovery process after giving
birth will be quicker and easier, hence getting back
into 'normal' training mode should be a breeze!

The
Culinary Corner
RECIPE
CHERRY NUT BISCUITS
Ingredients 4 oz butter - ¼ cup sugar - 1 egg
- 1tsp vanilla essence - 1 cup self raising flour - 4 oz
chopped mixed nuts - Glace cherries
Method
Cream butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add egg
and vanilla beat well. Add sifted flour and mix to a
soft sough. Drop rounded spoonful of mixture into nuts.
Roll into balls. Press half a cherry on top. Put on to
lightly greased oven tray, allow room for spreading.
Bake on 190c for 15/20 minutes. Allow cooling slightly
before removing from tray.

The CCN Chuckle
Our wise and witty Mula Nasruddin took a young man for a
game of golf.
The young man found
himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree
right in front of his ball - and directly between his
ball and the green.
After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot Mula Nasruddin
finally said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the
ball right over that tree."
With that challenge placed before him, the youngster
swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of
the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a
foot from where it had originally lay.
Responding to the young man's obvious anger Mula Nasruddin
offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your
age that pine tree was only three feet tall."
