Footy Fever in Kuraby

Brisbane Lions Mascot, Bernie "Gabba" Vegas,

and his new fan club

Crescents of Brisbane, together with the Brisbane Lions and Multicultural Affairs Queensland, held an Aussie Rules clinic in Kuraby on Sunday at which over 150 turned up, many getting a taste of the game for their very first time.

Lions defender, Chris Johnson, showed off some of his skills to the appreciative crowd while the Lions mascot, Bernie “Gabba” Vegas, was at hand to bring a bit of levity to the proceedings

The enthusiasm with which the youngsters took to the game was so infectious that many of the parents could not resist joining in on the action.

Some 100 complimentary tickets to Sunday's Lions/Carlton game at the Gabba were snapped up within a short while. The strong contingent of new Lions' supporters will be specially welcomed and acknowledged on the Gabba's giant screens this afternoon (Sunday 22 July).

Aussie Rules has just gained itself a whole new group of converts to the game!

Competition winners:

Jamal Parker (Jonathan Brown autographed knapsack)

Hindu girls want to memorize Quran

Kareema's Keep Fit Column

Q: : I find it too cold to go for a walk in the morning. Can you suggest any exersices
I can do at home?

A: Follow these activities and turn your home into a gym:

- WARM-UP: March on the spot for about 3-5mins. OPTION: jogging on the spot.
- Once you've warmed up, try skipping (you don't need a skipping rope, just use your legs).
- If you have stairs, do some step-up (you can even skip a step, or run up and walk down slow).
- If you love watching the morning shows, then do an activity during every ad (triceps dips, crunches, push-ups, etc.), or if you have a big gym-ball, use it to sit on while you watch TV. It is great to strengthen your core (abs and lower back muscles) because you have to sit up straight on it.
- Use a chair and do some squats (stand with you feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart with the chair behind you. Drop back as if you were going to sit on the chair but don't touch the seat, then rise and repeat (do about 12 - 15 repetitions)
- Options for strength training: use bottled water of canned food as weights.

COOL DOWN: 3-5mins of stretching

Bridge-to-Brisbane Sunday 5 August 2007

Week 3 of our 4 week Bridge-to-Brisbane training program:

Please note that the following program is suitable for beginners. For the more competitive or serious athlete,
intensity, duration and frequency of exercises need to be increased!

REMEMBER: NUTRITION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR TRAINING REGIME. SO START EATING HEALTHIER TODAY AND DON'T FORGET TO DRINK YOUR WATER!

DAY 1:
Aim to complete a 12k course either running or walking. If you're able to walk or run the actual race course, then I suggest you get out there and do it. This will give you a great advantage over other competitors on race day! If you're not able to do 12k, try to improve on last week's distance or time.

REMEMBER TO STRETCH AFTER EVERY WORKOUT!
Healthy Tip: Always keep your body hydrated - carry a bottle of water with you daily!

DAY 2:
Relax and recover - Do an activity that you enjoy (low impact). Include your stretching routine.

DAY 3:
Speed / power sessions: Find those hills you've been avoiding and 'turn up the speed'.
Walk or run it to the top (top pace) and walk back down slow. Repeat at least 5 times.
Try an extra 2 phases walking up the hill backwards. This will challenge the back of the legs!

Today's workout won't take long, but it will certainly strengthen the major leg muscles.

DAY 4:
Don't let the cold get to you. Find a heated pool and soothe the muscles with some laps (if you're not a swimmer, walking in the pool will do). The resistance of the water will guarantee a great workout! Spend at least 45mins in the pool if possible.
If you're not confident in the water, hold on to the side wall and kick the legs (try 30secs kicking, 30secs recovery). MAKE SURE YOU'RE BACK IS STRAIGHT WHEN KICKING.

DAY 5:
Upper body strength session: push-ups, chin-ups, Tricep dips, sit-ups etc.
If you have weights handy, bench-presses, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks or pull overs will be the way to go. Basically anything that will improve strength in your upper body.

DAY 6:
Lower body strength session: Cycle if possible. If you can get to a gym, try a spin (cycle) class.
If not, lunges and squats will do the job. (12 to 15 repetitions - 3 times).
Include an easy walk if possible.

ALWAYS ENSURE GOOD POSTURE AND TECHNIQUE - TUMMY IN, SHOULDERS BACK AND DOWN, BACK STRAIGHT!

DAY 7:
RELAX AND RECOVER! We've got one more week of preperation...

PLEASE NOTE: The above training program assumes a healthy participant. Those with medical conditions,  injuries or who are not physically active, need to seek clearance from their GP before starting any form of exercise.

Education to Eliminate Poverty

By Luqman and Sameer: Business Icon Competitors

Ever wanted to change the world but found it too expensive? The Oaktree Foundation can give you this opportunity for as little as eight dollars per month.

Founded by Hugh Evans in 2003, the Oaktree Foundation establishes educational facilities, enabling sustainable development in poverty stricken nations. With branches through Australia as well as in South Africa, the UK and the USA, the Oaktree Foundation provides education for the underprivileged, such as these beautiful children bursting with contagious energy and a love of life.

In recognition of this worthy cause, the Queensland Business Icon Competition collaborated with The Oaktree foundation and together have created an awareness towards the underprivileged societies that surround us.

The Queensland Business Icon is basically an Apprentice type competition running throughout the entire Queensland state looking for the states youngest and brightest minds. Through various competitions like their current fundraising event for The Oaktree foundation they test the skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing and strategic decision making of individuals and are eliminated by a selected panel of judges chosen from the business and university sector.

The Queensland Business Icon Competitors of team 4 and the Oaktree foundation would really like to thank all those who donated and attended the fundraising event.

Blister Breaking News: Hajj pilgrims offered seamless trousers

HELP is being offered to Muslims afflicted by chafed thighs during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Worshippers at the annual event are to be offered "seamless trousers'' for the first time to guard against chafing, the Saudi Gazette reported recently.

The trousers are designed to be worn under the "ihram'', the loose-fitting white robe worn by Muslims undertaking the pilgrimage.

"Pilgrims often complain of sore thighs because of friction as a result of long walks. The trouser will protect the thighs,'' the paper said.

Jobseeker Forum

Report by ACCES Services' Abdullah Ibrahim

The two ACCES Services INC Muslim Employment Workers held their first Muslim Jobseeker Forum, one of a series of Jobseeker Workshops.

There was a limit on RSVP’s of 50 but that was extended because of the excellent response from the Muslim Community to 60. It was an excellent turn out with 61 people showing up. The waiting list had another 25 names on it with keen phone calls daily inquiring if a seat was made available for them. We provided childcare which enabled mothers to attend in respectful numbers.

The objective of the forums is to listen to Muslim jobseekers and to record what their difficulties are in finding suitable employment. The information is in the process of being collated and it will be presented to an Employer Forum which will be held on the 8th of August. It will also be presented to different levels of Government to stimulate action to improve services in the form of Training and Employment opportunities to suit us a “Muslim” community.

The response from the attendants was exceptionally positive. Everyone enjoyed it and were happy to have contributed to this forum. It gave them an opportunity to discuss a topic that has been of great concern especially in our current climate contributing to the existing misconceptions.

Guest speaker, Nazima Hansa of RE/MAX, was invited to talk on her experiences which also included an inspirational message for those disheartened by long term unemployment. She described  her journey on the road to getting established in the industry and offered job aspirants advice on how to "make their mark" in whatever field they ended up in. In her speech entitled "Looking Beyond The Hijab" Ms Hansa explained how it was possible to work successfully in a very publicly exposed profession without having to compromise on one's principles or religion. She encouraged job seekers to continuously update their technical and people skills and concluded with a quote from Winston Churchill: “Past adversity is often the window of opportunity.”

InshaAllah we will be holding 6 smaller Muslim Jobseeker Forums and it will be advertised through different venues for the people who have missed out and would like to contribute to discussions. These smaller forums will be held in different localities. We will keep you updated on the dates and locations. If you would like to participate in these smaller forums please call us and leave your name and contact details and we will contact you when dates are confirmed.

We would like to recognise Queensland Government’s support through the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations as part of the broader Muslim Community Engagement Strategy to promote positive community relations with the Muslim Community.

We would like to sincerely thank all the participants for making it a success. And a special thanks to Jas Sanghera who coordinated the day, and the assisting facilitators Anas Abdalla and Shaima Khan from Al-Nisa who are the Youth and Community workers and Shadia Hijazi from The Islamic Womens Association of Queensland.

CCN Tip of the Week

LEGO KITS FOR NEXT TO NOTHING

Lego is a brilliant toy but is very expensive. There is a great way to buy it for a quarter the retail price by getting it in bulk on eBay. There are a couple of rules to buying Lego on eBay. If the kit is complete with an instruction book then it will sell for around 60% of retail. If the books are missing (as they usually are with bulk lots) it sells for about a quarter of retail.

The trick few people know is you can read copies of all the Lego build instructions from http://www.hccamsterdam.nl/brickfactory/index.htm. It is a great way to build an amazing Lego collection in next to no time.

The CCN Chuckle

Mula Mula Nasruddin was in a horrible accident, and was injured. But the only permanent damage he suffered was the amputation of both of his ears.

As a result of this "unusual" handicap, he was very self-conscious about his having no ears.

Because of the accident, Mula Nasruddin received a large sum of money from the insurance company. It was always his dream to own his own business, so he decided with all this money he had, he now had the means to own a business.

So he went out and purchased a small, but expanding computer firm.

But he realized that he had no business knowledge at all, so he decided that he would have to hire someone to run the business.

He picked out three top candidates, and interviewed each of them.

The first interview went really well. Mula Nasruddin really liked this candidate. His last question to him was "Do you notice anything unusual about me?"

The candidate said, "Now that you mention it, you have no ears." Mula Nasruddin got really upset and threw him out.

The second interview went even better than the first. This candidate was much better than the first. Again, to conclude the interview, Mula Nasruddin asked the same question again, "Do you notice anything unusual about me?"

The candidate also noticed, "Yes, you have no ears." Mula Nasruddin was really upset again, and threw this second candidate out.

Then he had the third interview. The third candidate was even better than the second, the best out of all of them. Almost certain that he wanted to hire this candidate, Mula Nasruddin once again asked; "Do you notice anything unusual about me?"

The candidate replied "Yeah, I bet you are wearing contact lenses."

Surprised, Mula Nasruddin then asked, "Wow! That's quite perceptive of you! How could you tell?"

The candidate burst out laughing and said you can't wear glasses if you don't have any ears!
