Catch you at the Crescents & Lions Footy Show at the Kuraby Community Centre at 2pm today!

Dashing defender extraordinaire Chris Johnson will be fronting up at the Kuraby Community Hall to be a part of the Crescents & Lions Aussie Rules Clinic.

The Aboriginal player captains the Brisbane Lions and has been one of the real keys in the side’s successes of the not too distant past.

His evasive skills, superb foot skills and the rebound that he provides the side are an important part of the Lions defence.

We look forward to catching up with the defender today!

Howard policies 'like Hitler'

Former Labor prime minister Paul Keating has again savaged the man who defeated him in the 1996 election, Prime Minister John Howard, accusing him of being unpatriotic and anti-Muslim.

In an address to the Sydney film school festival during the week, Mr Keating described Mr Howard as "a nationalist and not a patriot", and compared his politics to those of Adolf Hitler.

"A patriot will not exclude a person from another race from the community where they have lived side by side and whom he has known for many years but a nationalist will always remain suspicious of someone who does not seem to belong to his kind of people or more likely his kind of thinking," Mr Keating said.

"Shades there of John Howard's discomfort with Australia's multicultural community and a disgust of the Islamic community."

Kareema's Keep Fit Column

Q: I am not motivated and therefore finding it difficult to get an exercise routine started. What are some of your favourite health and exercise tips?

A: - Don't DELAY, start TODAY!!!
Getting started is tough, but once you do - there's no turning back!

- Do your BEST, inspire the REST!!!
You'll be amazed at how those around you will be inspired by your efforts (you could
in turn, motivate them)!

- BELIEVE and ACHIEVE!!!
Believe in yourself and achieve your goals!

- YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!!!
Make it HEALTHY!

Consistency is the key!!! Find and activity that you enjoy and be sure to incorporate
it in your daily routine, eg. walking, cycling, swimming etc. Remember, it does not have
to be time consuming, make it fit in with your current routine (that way you are not
sacrificing too much of your day).
Most of all - HAVE FUN!

Bridge-to-Brisbane Sunday 5 August 2007

Week 2 of our 4 week Bridge to Brisbane training program:

Please note that the following program is suitable for beginners. For the more competitive or serious athlete,
intensity, duration and frequency of exercises need to be increased!

REMEMBER: NUTRITION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR TRAINING REGIME. SO START EATING HEALTHIER TODAY
AND DON'T FORGET TO DRINK YOUR WATER!

RACE DAY IS NEARING, WE NEED TO KEEP MOVING!!!
LETS TRAIN SMART GUYS, NOT HARD..

DAY 1:
Let's try for a 5k run again or aim for a 7k walk. Remember our goal this week should
be to complete a 12k course. Try to improve on last week's distance or time.

REMEMBER TO STRETCH AFTER EVERY WORKOUT!
Healthy Tip: Always keep your body hydrated - carry a bottle of water with you daily!

DAY 2:
Relax and recover - Do an activity that you enjoy (low impact). Include your stretching routine.

DAY 3:
Do some speed work: 30secs top pace (walking or running), then recover for 30secs. Repeat at least
7 times. Walk for 5 - 10mins and start with speed work again. Duration - about 1 hr.

DAY 4:
Take a break. Allow the muscles to recover for our next workout.

DAY 5:
Upper body strength session: push-ups, chin-ups, Tricep dips, sit-ups etc.
If you have weights handy, bench-presses, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks or pull overs will
be the way to go. Basically anything that will improve strength in your upper body.

DAY 6:
Lower body strength session: Cycling will be a welcome change. If you can get to a gym,
try a spin (cycle) class. If not, lunges and squats will do the job. (12 to 15 repetitions - 3 times).
Include an easy walk if possible.

ALWAYS ENSURE GOOD POSTURE AND TECHNIQUE - TUMMY IN, SHOULDERS BACK AND DOWN, BACK STRAIGHT!

DAY 7:
RELAX AND RECOVER

PLEASE NOTE: The above training program assumes a healthy participant. Those with medical conditions,
injuries or who are not physically active, need to seek clearance from their GP before starting any form of exercise

Dear Editor

I've been receiving the Crescents Newsletter ever since I took a few hours out some months back to visit the Symposium and Expo on Queensland Muslims at the Mercure (Hotel) in Brisbane.

Whilst I'm not a Muslim, I have long held a high respect for people of your faith because I readily accept the fact that our world is a better place because of the great scholars and developers both from historic and contemporary times who have done so much to advance humanity and our civilization. This to say nothing of the preservation and development of the sciences, technology and industry that Muslim scholars are particularly responsible for.

My personal motto is: "We are kind to each other because we are one of a kind" From what I have experienced to date, many of the few Muslims I have had the pleasure of meeting agree with me on this theme.

As it is that I mix with an eclectic bunch of people on a daily basis, I keep abreast of the commentary which spills forth from the mouths of many. As such I have become increasingly more vocal about my discomfort when I hear ignorant, blanket statements filling many a contemporary forum in respect of the perceived links between Muslims and terrorists.

Recent events have made it even more difficult for Muslims to be accepted around the globe as being people from a variety of cultures who happen to share one faith and who, generally are good, kind, caring and faithful people.

As an Australian and irrespective of my own faithful beliefs, I'm grateful to know that we have so many devout and good Muslims in my country; a nation which has been developed, post settlement 200 years ago, by people from every nation and land around the globe. Yes, I believe we are all immigrants and so none of us can claim a greater sense of ownership than the other, save for our indigenous people who justly had first right to this land.

Muslims have a great history of the preservation and enhancement of knowledge and art and it is for this I am grateful to know that you are so vital and dynamic a part of our wider community and places of learning. I have no interest in the notion of tolerance because it is my practice to accept and to celebrate the differences I find in others I meet along the way. I don't have the energy to have to put up with someone or some value I don't like and therefore I don't go out of my way to "tolerate" much at all. Rather, I seek to understand so that I can learn to accept someone or something that might be a little different to what I am used to. Maybe then I will become a better person because day by day I become less ignorant.

In closing, I simply want to add my support to those amongst you who currently suffer for no better reason than the ignorance of others who fan the flames of fear and inequity. I am especially mindful of the doctors and students who come to our shores and who now become even more marginalised because of the possible actions of a few.

I urge you all to remain true to your wonderful values as faithful people and please know that there are many in this world who would be far greater characters if they had the strength of conviction and genuine kindness in their hearts that I have seen in the faces, hands and hearts of the few Muslims I have met to date.

Enjoy the smiles you create each day

Ira Winston

Dear Editor

Thanks for the lovely recipes each week. But as some of us don’t live in Queensland we don’t readily get South African Ingredients.

I would greatly appreciate it if in those recipes that contain uniquely South African ingredients, one could suggest an Australian alternative.

Keep the recipes coming.

The CCN Chuckle

Mula Nasruddin, the father of five children, had won a toy at a raffle.

He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present.

"Who is the most obedient?" he asked.

"Who never talks back to mother? Who does everything she says?"

Five small voices answered in unison. "Okay, dad, you get the toy."
