Bishop Christopher Prowse
The Muslim/Catholic
Delegation from Australia
currently on a study tour of
Istanbul and Rome head back
home this week after an
eventful week in Rome where
they were invited to a
cocktail dinner held in
their honour at the
residence of Tim Fischer,
Australian Ambassador to the
Holy See of the Vatican
(pictured below)
On Wednesday the delegation
was given special seating at
the Vatican during the
Pope's audience to a crowd
of some 25 000 who filled St
Peter's Square.
In between visiting the
historical sites, the group
held meetings with the
Pontifical Council for
Interreligious Dialogue; the
Institute for the Study of
Religions and Cultures at
the Gregorian University;
the Tiber Institute; and the
Pontifical Institute for
Arabic and Islamic Studies.
On Friday the delegation
headed to the Great Mosque
of Rome (reported to be the
largest in Europe) for the
Jummah prayers.
Saturday was spent in the
medieval town of Assisi a
two hour drive north of
Rome, to the home of St
Francis.
Fatih Asar, President
of the Queensland
Intercultural Society, told
CCN that through this
initiative, believed to be
the first of its kind to
involve Muslims and
Christians to the cities of
Istanbul and Rome over
fourteen days, an example
has been set for successful
interfaith co-operation,
understanding and
friendship.
The tour was jointly
organized by the Australian
Intercultural Society and
the Melbourne Catholic
Archdiocese.

ANZAC
Day
Islamic College of Brisbane
Commemorates ANZAC Day
Lest we forget
Anzac Day is an
important day for the Australian people due to the
fact that many of our servicemen lost their lives
fighting for our country, amongst them were members
from our own Muslim families.
On May 8m 1997 the Daily Telegraph published a story
entitled "Wings of Courage" in which it mentioned
that one of our Muslim brothers who gave his life,
not only for our country, but also for a tiny
village in France. Extracts from the article are as
follows:
"Bravery wears many faces. And in times of war it
brushes those who normally would be exposed to
nothing more than the hazards of civilian life. Were
it not for the war - World War II - the name of
Brisbane Grammar school old boy M.A.G. (Bob) Howsan
would not be etched into everlasting memory on a
memorial in Marly-Le-Roi, a small town in France
.
And had he survived, he would probably have marched
in an Anzac Day parade last month along with his
mates, had a few grogs, played two-up and reminisced
about those long gone days. Instead, his memory is
proudly recalled every Armistice Day - November 11 -
in faraway France.
The story starts on the night of April 1-2, 1942
when six airmen attached to the Royal Canadian Air
Force (RCAF) in Squadron 405 - known amongst the
crews as Vancouver Squadron - took off in their
Wellington bomber from Pocklington in Yorkshire for
a routine raid on the Ford factory in Poissy. It,
along with other factories in the vicinity, had been
seized by the Germans.
The crew of the bomber - although all technically
"British" - came from several Commonwealth
countries. The pilot, Flight-Sergeant Howsan, was
Australian: the rear-gunner Pilot officer MacKinnon,
and the second air gunner, Sergeant Ashun, were UK
born while the three remaining members of the crew -
the second pilot Flight Sergeant Howe, first air
gunner, Flight Sergeant Page and the air observer,
Pilot Officer Laurel Burgoyne, were Canadians.
It was a motley group but by no means unusual.
They took off according to the sole survivor,
Burgoyne, dropped their bombs from a low altitude.
But as the Wellington turned for home it was hit by
German anti-aircraft fire.
Writing to Howsan's mother after the war - his
earlier letter telling her of the news of how her
son died appears to have been confiscated by the
British censors - Burgoyne tells her of how the
aircraft caught fire.
Burgoyne reported it to Howsan and then concentrated
on battling the flames. Soon his parachute caught
fire and, as he went forward again to report that
the situation appeared hopeless he was catapulted
out of the aircraft through the open hatch.
He managed to open what was left of his burned chute
and was lucky to land on a tree that broke his fall.
From there he watched in horror as Howsan guided the
fireball away from the village of tiny houses,
church and school until, safely over a park, the
aircraft crashed in a ball of flame.
A few years ago, the deputy mayor of Marly-le- Roi,
Patrick Gautier, said "There is no doubt that these
young men did everything they could right up to the
last moment, to avoid falling on the village."
Those in Mary-Le-Roi who still recall the event,
tell how the outline of one body was imprinted in
the ground and on the morning of April 2, a small
procession of villagers laid bunches of violets in
the poignant silhouette until ordered from the scene
by the German troops.
Burgoyne was captured, badly burned and injured, and
spent the rest of the war in a PoW camp.
The Germans arranged a military funeral for the crew
whose final resting place was the local cemetry -
Les Gonards de Versailles.
Despite the years that have passed, the towns-people
never forgot the bravery displayed by the crew and
on November 11, 1994 a memorial to them was
unveilled."
The Queensland Muslim Historical Society Inc. has
reproduced this article so that the Muslims of
Queensland all know about our own Muslim hero. Bob
Howsan was the son of the original Howsan family who
was the ancestor of the Howsan, Rane and Mahommed
families who are now a great proportion of our
original Muslim community.
In respect for our fallen war heroes and to join
with the rest of our patriotic Australians, our
welfare shop will be closed on Saturday, April 25.

Maradona's Mate's Update
Last
week the team took to the
field again after a two week
break due to the weather and
Easter. After an hour's
drive to get to the fields,
the lads made sure the drive
home was a happy one, coming
back from 2 goals down to
win 5-3 against Northpine
Mavericks. This
past Saturday in a fixture
that saw 1 v 2, the team had
a case of dejavu after going
down 2-0 to win the game 5-3
against Northpine
Kalangaroos.
Next week Saturday the boys host Lifehouse at their
homeground on Lister Street at 3pm. Your support is most
welcomed.
Using the book
club you can see what books fellow CCN

IN PREPARATION FOR THE UPCOMING CRESWALK, FOLLOW THIS 4
WEEK TRAINING PROGRAM:
REMEMBER TEAM:
TRAIN SMART, NOT HARD!!
WEEK 2 of our
4week training program:
Please note that the following program is suitable for
beginners. For the more competitive or serious athlete,
intensity, duration and frequency of exercises need to
be increased!
REMEMBER: NUTRITION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR
TRAINING REGIME. ENJOY A
HEALTHY DIET AND DON'T FORGET TO DRINK YOUR
WATER!
DAY 1:
Walk for a minimum of 45
mins. (10 mins. at a moderate pace, 30
mins. at a more brisk pace and 5 mins. cool down / slow
pace.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO STRETCH AFTER EVERY WORKOUT!
Healthy Tip: Always keep your body hydrated - carry a
bottle of water with you daily!
DAY 2:
Similar to day 1. Increase your walking time by 5 mins.
or more if you feel comfortable and include some hills
as part of your course.
Wear some ankle weights for
extra resistance. Remember, the aim is to constantly
challenge the muscles!
DAY 3:
A spin (cycle) class will be great for strengthening the
legs so be sure to give it a go. Alternatively, a ride
in the park could be just as challenging if you’re new
to cycling. Ensure good posture and technique.
DAY 4:
Back to strength training team! Lift weights, including
your own body weight (tricep dips, push-ups, sit-ups,
chin-ups, etc).
DAY 5:
Active recovery - Do an activity that you enjoy (low
impact). Include your stretching routine.
DAY 6:
Take on a more challenging walking or cycling course
(steeper hills, etc.). Be sure to increase the distance
on last week.
DAY 7:
Head for the pool and enjoy a few laps of swimming for
an all over body workout. If you’re not comfortable
swimming or don’t have access to a pool, a gentle walk
in the park or an active game with the kids will do.
PLEASE NOTE: The above training program assumes a
healthy participant. Those with medical conditions or
who are not already physically active, need to seek
clearance from their GP before starting any form of
exercise.

The CCN Chuckle
Jallaludin goes to
see the Mula Nasruddin. "Brother Nasruddin, something
terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about
it."
Mula Nasruddin asked, "What's wrong?"
Jallaludin replied,
"My wife is poisoning me."
Mula Nasruddin, very
surprised by this, asks, "How can that be?"
Jallaludin then
pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm certain she's poisoning
me, what should I do?"
Mula Nasruddin then
offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I'll see
what I can find out and I'll let you know."
A week later the Mula Nasruddin calls Jallaludin and
says, "Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke to her on the
phone for three hours. You want my advice?"
